  1. $3.8M aint chump change. You're starting to make a believer out of me when you say cut him. I doubt they could trade him for that much money.

The actual cap savings number is $2.75M. Brad Smith isn't going anywhere. Just because Gailey misused him doesn't mean he's getting cut.

I do think Lindell is gone unless this new kicker absolutely falls on his face. I loved Lindell, but he just can't hit the long ones anymore nor reach the endzone, and there's no way I want to carry 2 kickers again.

  2. You're absolutely right that his attendance (or nonattendance) will be telling.

However, he has until June 15 to sign his tender per the CBA/league rules. If I understand the rules correctly, as long as he is unsigned, he doesn't face any penalty for not attending the minicamp, even though it's "mandatory." OTAs.

Simply put, he isn't "holding out" or subject to fines until after June 15, for whatever that's worth.

So, yes I agree, it won't look good if he doesn't sign by or show up to minicamp OTAs, but it could also be a bluff/negotiating tactic as June 15th is a more significant date in the negotiation process than May 10 or whenever the minicamp starts.

That said, I would hope Byrd realizes the importance of getting off on the right foot with the new staff and being there to learn a new defense. He already missed the voluntary camp a week or two ago, and would hate to see any detrimental effects of him having to play catch up.

EDIT: All the OTAs are voluntary until June 11-13. http://buffalowdown....-buffalo-bills/

You're right about everything except the date, it's July 15th.

Of course he won't show up - he doesn't have a contract, that would be crazy. What if he sustained a freak injury like an achilles pop? How many people here would risk something like that?

The franchise tag for safeties is a guaranteed one-year contract of $6.916 million if Byrd opts to accept it. But why would he? Free-agent safety Dashon Goldson signed a four-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth a reported $41.25 million with $22 million in guarantees.

Buffalo News is just terrible with contract information, it's a five year deal. But yeah, it's still screwing this negotiation up.

  3. You would be very surprised at the amount of college kids that get into trouble of some sort every year, some obviously more then others.

Warren Sap dropped in the draft because of rumors of drug use, and for that matter so did Dan Marino. He lasted until the end of the draft 27 out of 28 picks because he supposedly smoked a joint once.

Its what happens once they are in the pro's, they are warned enough.

It's worth noting that today's NFL is very different from that era. Testing is much more frequent now and Goodell will suspend players at the drop of a hat. We just seen 2nd-year WR Blackmon lose 25% of his season.

Also I don't think the only issue here is him smoking weed. He was also arrested in a bar fight and he's got some serious character issues. Here's a quote from an August 2012 article from CBSSports.com:

Last year, multiple sources told CBSSports.com colleague Bruce Feldman that there were several incidents in which Rogers crossed the line with Vol coaches and staff, including a "complete meltdown" during UT's season-ending loss at Kentucky and another episode in the team weight room. The incidents were so troubling to some staffers that they felt Dooley was risking the locker room dynamic by allowing Rogers to remain in the program.

This is going to be a great litmus test for our new coaching staff, and I'm very curious to see how it will play out.

  4. KD never played IL in a 4-3 before the 2012 season, here is a decent article that discusses his transition to the 4-3 last summer.

Can he play inside in a 3-4? Pretty damn good!

That's a good article, it would appear that he can flourish in both schemes. PFT says we never made him an offer. NFL.com says his stock dropped with us after the draft. It's difficult to read our FO in this case, we definitely need another ILB.

  5. Why would the Bills pursue Karlos to begin with if he didn't have the ability to play those spots? The inability to play anything more than the traditional 4-3 Mike is exactly why Shepp is gone to Indy.

Earlier in this thread someone said that they didn't think Dansby would be a 3-down LB with us, and that could be the case. If he wasn't going to be a 3-down player with us, I could see a huge gap between our offer and his asking price. Also Shepp stunk as the MIKE in a 4-3 so he couldn't even do that very well.

  6. Byrd was really good his first year, followed by a mediocre second and better his third year. He is far from irreplaceable.

I think you are greatly undervaluing Byrd. He didn't allow a single TD in coverage last year and picked off 5 passes. With the aging of Ed Reed, he's arguably the best free safety in the league. That does sort of make him irreplaceable, if you are talking about replacing him with equal talent.

What's killing negotiations is Tampa - they had a ridiculous amount of cap space and signed Goldson to an overinflated contract. I still feel confident they will reach a deal this summer before the July 15 deadline.

  7. No. I am in PTR's camp. :bag:

I kow, I know the trndy thing to to is hate on Darcy. They are close, they aren't bad. They did salvage a abysmal season by getting back to .500.

No, they are not close. They are bad. And they did not "salvage" the season by going .500. You know town expectations are low when .500 is the bar. More teams make the playoffs than those that sit out in the NHL, and we've missed them what - 7 of the last 11 years? And now we need to rebuild?

Sorry but the fans and media are right in this case. Darcy has had his shot and he failed, time to move on.

  8. So if he's such an amazing talent, why wasn't he taken?

It can't *just* be character because thugs, idiots and potheads get drafted all the time in this league...

This morning I watched Game Changers on NFL Network and they had 5 of the top WRs being grilled (this was pre-draft) by Michael Irvin and Steve Mariucci. Woods and Rogers were 2 of the 5, and I have to say Rogers came across as kind of a douche and definitely the most aloof. He was wearing 2 massive fake diamond earrings while running patterns and when asked the question "What will you do for your 1st NFL game" he answered "I'm going to have my full swag on, girls in the stands, and sportin' the freshest kicks." Now, don't take that as an indictment of the man, but he came across as a guy more interested in the money, fame, status, and lifestyle that comes with playing in the NFL rather than winning games. To his credit, he did get into some football-speak and said he loves beating up DBs. Watch the replay when it's on next and you'll get what I mean, there are definitely issues with the guy that I can see teams running from (no way we take this guy in the Chan era).

By contrast, Woods was one cool customer and appeared to have a very football-focused demeanor. I still love the Rogers pick and think it will very interesting to watch how our new coaches handle this guy.

  9. You see it here? He's a special athlete, that's for sure - at ttech vs Oregon on that one. Should've had 11 guys eyes on him and still got to the endzone

The guy is also one tough SOB. I didn't see him play for Tech last year, but I remember watching him at Tenn when Hunter got hurt and he stepped up and carried the load. He was fearless and definitely does not shy away from contact.
