I mean, rookie deals are heavily regulated and prescribed at this point. Guys don't have much leverage at first, especially outside the 1st round. And we all know the teams can cut a guy at any point, which means the player stops receiving paychecks. This is why players use leverage from past performance and with current offseason participation to seek new deals/additional guaranteed money. It's also a way to minimize injury risk while the player still has no future guarantees.
This is a great counterpoint.
Rookie contracts have limitations. And the Team has most all the leverage. Absolutely
And as I mentioned at some point , its certainly expected that a player wants his new/ next contract to reflect his self worth.
We have some more experts here who might chime in on injury guarantees on a rookie deal ?? But that sure aint me.
I just gots opinions 😋

Considering how many coaching & QB changes teams make in 5 years or more, the stat Matt uses is one of the dumbest things I've heard. Currently there are only 4 of these QB/HC combos in the league, 5 if you count the years Love was on the bench at GB. KC & LA won the SB in their QBs 1st 3 seasons, the others haven't. The odds of a starting QB/HC being together that long are so low-only 12.5% of the league has a combo that have been together 5 seasons or more before this season starts. Considering the natural odds of winning the Super Bowl are 1 in 32, this stat is beyond meaningless. Matt Parrino ought to be ashamed.
Edit: I mentioned LAR. I fixed the stats when I realized Stafford/McVay have had only 4 seasons, but didn't fix the next sentence. So of the 4 QB/HC combos, only Mahomes/Reid have won a SB together.
Yes . but i got a great reaction didn't it 😋

I think our ideal combo with the greatest upside is Bishop at SS and Forrest at FS. That's their natural positions. Ideally, we recreate a Poyer and Hyde combo. Poyer was the SS and Hyde the FS, and while on specific plays they could and did switch as coverage dictated, this doesn't mean they were 50% interchangeable and that the Bills didn't have dedicated safety positions. Right now the coaching staff has a lot of faith in Rapp, and they should-he is underrated by Bills fans. So we are reluctant to move him out of SS -but we also want the draft capitol of Bishop on the field, so we are unnaturally slotting him into the FS position, where he has more upside than Hamlin, who is an inspirational story but a JAG -he's not bad, he's not good, he's a veteran who won't make many mistakes but has low upside athletic potential. Ideally Bishop shows enough the coaching staff are confident he can handle SS as well or better than Rapp, and Forrest also has a strong camp and wins the FS position. I feel its more likely that we start with Rapp at SS and Bishop as FS (yes they will interchange on certain plays and schemes, like Poyer/Hyde) but it will take the almost inevitable injury to the hard charging (friend or foe) Rapp to move Bishop to his natural SS safety spot, and Forrest to the FS spot, and we have the ideal pair to replace the Poyer/Hyde regime.
Unless Forrest blows it in camp. Haven't heard much news on him.
I like the concept ! But
The bolded somewhat discounts your Forrest leanings lol
But yes . Mc D would would be delighted to run that back. and with that much solid depth behind it. Package options etc

For all the folks who defend the player. They signed the contract. period
And yes they certainly should play hard for a much better contract. and then sign that.
It's a business

Yeah, but what message is he sending that's worth missing all these early but still important practices? "I'm really serious, guys! I really am mad now!" It's just so juvenile. If anything, Beane is less likely to sign him if he holds out, and I see why. He loses nothing by coming to mini-camp and gains a lot, including Beane's good will.
Some of these athletes have the minds of 14-year olds.
Its fine to ask for the World. And he should honestly. Always start the bidding high lol
But he put it in the public sphere ( disrespectful business )
He took his Bills thingie down which players do when they want Out !
Which he shouldn't. IMHO i feel he should have talked to Beanes and done the secret handshake thing
I perform well this season you guys pay me
You perform and you will get paid. ( maybe not in Buffalo ) but it is the truth.
Show me how invested you are.
This is juvenile on Cooks part

Didn't they just reorganize that group ?
Health and nutrition too
Hopefully when they get to St John for Camp Bills get spoiled again with good food and add some mass to the muscle.

Why would any team ink that kind of deal (or really any deal) without getting a physical. I assumed when terms get announced a guy has 24hrs to get there for physical kinda thing. When you spend solid $$ on a player from FA; its not only hitvhing your boat to a guy, its also removing yourself from a certain tier of FA money..... so God forbid you ink someone, then find out they cant pass a physical, but the other guys you were courting have moved on and found a new team.
Absolutely bonkers if this is how it works. How does a full month pass without being sure on the physical?
He has an injury still and needs to be cleared.
Not sure they are depending on him ?
Patriots have the leverage still
Just the way I read it.

oh he’s definitely shown the flashes and we have plenty of time with him in the buildingthe problem is each year we burn waiting just hurts the odds for the overall team.
whether we like to say it…. Him not being the dude last year could quite literally be a missed Super Bowl for the team.
hopefully he comes back as a reason we do make it.
He still sounds banged up and working through it last quote i read from him. Lots of injuries most of the season
and fair to assume def might have been looking for him aggressively after his first year on tape
But, he must have been a wreck last season as i read it.
Still not 100%
Offense was likely depending on that skill set and had to pivot away from him
hoping he can get back to and exceed his rook year

I was a Cole booster out of college, he had a really sheet rookie year. For us to win it this year, he'll have to improve a ton and fast. He's got the athletic ability to be a top SS, but it all has to come together.
I think he had no confidence in coverage and the d we ran was too much for him to get comfortable with after his pre season injury.
He, Coleman, Carter, and all of our rookie selections this year will have to have much better development than what we saw last season. We are pivoting to a younger faster and more athletically gifted team.
Good post
Coaching. I know i repeat myself , but the way to get the kids ramped up is all about what the Coaches feed them and then expect from them
Scheming the strengths And weaknesses of Our own players from week to week and year to year
Like the changes and key continuity with OC , DC still young in their roles here.
If a few of the young un's can be second and 3rd year stars? its a job well done. If its 4-5th year. ya got the wrong coach player matchup on board
Go Bills !

One thing that makes me a consistent McD “defender” for lack of a better word is that he’s seemingly attempted to adapt to fix his weaknesses. For example when he got here and for the first 5-6 years he was here McD was known as a very conservative coach. The past couple of seasons he’s in the top 5 of aggressive playcalling.
McD held onto being very hard on players but after that article in 2023 came out he let loose a little bit and players responded.
For several years McD was very loyal to his coaches and only kept guys he knew. He’s shown the past few years that he’s willing to dump coordinators and hire from outside his tree. I liked the bold move to fire Dorsey mid season and I liked the move to call the defense himself for a season.
I am not sure if McD is going to get this team over the top but he’s not doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. He’s attempting to grow as a coach and that’s giving me confidence that he deserves a couple of more cracks at getting this team a title
Fine post here 🙂

Sean has yet to field a defense that's matched what Leslie Frazier delivered in 2021 and 2022, when much of that staff was in their 4th or 5th year together. Aside from Babich, it's been a complete overhaul — Sean keeps tinkering hoping to get back to what he had with Leslie.
disagree with trying to return to Frazier.
Sean is tinkering to make it to the SB and win.
I like the efforts he has made this year with Coaching. And Pegula supporting the investment !

Yeah, is similar to the bad feeling I had about Josh Rosen, only different. Looking at the pictures and interviews of that pencil-necked tool, all I could think was "never, ever will be a leader of strong men, and therefore will fail as an NFL QB." So ffs me all you want, I have a track record 😀 And like I said, would love to be wrong. Rapp - he is a train wreck the way he injures everyone and can't say healthy himself, but just looking at him you can picture him putting a hurt on people.
That is great - and I read the same kinds of reviews when he was drafted. The play I saw last year was more tentative, in my eyes. Could just be because he was a rook and missed time, but I hope what you saw at Utah translates to the NFL - it doesn't always. If it does, and I am 100% rooting for him, my next worry will be "can he stay healthy".
you do worry a bit much Marlin 😉

Heck I looked like an alter boy when younger, but was a state champ wrestler, national champ Powerlifter, and bounced in some of the worst roadhouses. That aw shucks look an be in youre favor. Now I truly am just a middle aged man who enjoys working out to be healthy. My hitting days are long gone. Besides my joints are that of a 68 yr old more than decade older than my age from the powerlifting. The body isn’t meant to do that stuff.
If he behaves like Deon back in the day, afraid to tackle people then make all the assertions you want as you have a body if work. The Utah posters states he’s tough, so that’s good enough for me. Last year he didn’t have a full off season due to injury,so another year in McD’s defense he’ll probably take the next step. Look how Spencer Brown evolved over three years.
The tentative was more likely from trying to avoid mistakes is my guess.

I thought he was tremendous last year. The best play at Center since Kent Hull retired.
Well ....
But The Bills were able to run an upgraded run offense and pass pro in the middle was nice as well.
Seems very few play calls /adjustments were missed by him. ? But thats for you more focused fans to answer truly.
Definite big improvement over Morse. LG adjustment might have helped matters ?

White gave up a pair of touchdowns on the day - the first to Moore and then another to veteran receiver Curtis Samuel. White matched up with most of the Bills speedsters and had a few reps that didn’t go his way. The veteran was brought in to compete for the starting job opposite Christian Benford.
It’s just one practice and not worth overreacting to, but there are legitimate concerns about White’s ability to cover fast receivers at this stage of his career. When he did get beat in limited time with the Los Angeles Rams last season, it was usually down the field and while working against a faster player.
I still am having a hard time trying to understand why they brought him back at all. He played terrible in LA and with the Ravens.....After his injury recovery.
Its only OTA's and he can't keep up with the our WR speed....
Then he doesnt run on the outside them. he will be in the mix.
Package player perhaps. Smart player and very good ball awareness. Doubt that left him yet , as his speed might have.

just came to TSW to post this. I like it. I think we (myself included) perhaps overlook him because we had the Poyer/Hyde combo so long. If you paired Rapp with another stud at safety, he'd look even better. As is, he looks really good.

not fast but good play recognition , so he gets a step ahead . Persistent and finishes

Beasley was tremendous for us. Guy could always get open. And always got the first down. He got the most out of his ability his entire NFL career. And that was at a very high level for what he did. What more could you ask for?
A guy on today’s roster who I get a similar vibe about-though not in not quite as prominent a role, but still gets the most out of his abilities every play is Ty Johnson. Always makes plays when called upon. And is just a very good football player.
