  1. That's not what the announcers said, nor some of the sports writers post game reviews. Chan makes a lot of the calls as to when CJ is in or out. And FYI MANY R's take a breather after hard runs.

IIRC the quote attributed to Chan was that he takes CJ out "because he gets too excited at times," which made me want to throw my TV controller across the room.

Spelling the running back = common sense. Taking him out because he's allegedly overenthusiastic = :wallbash:

  2. I'd still like to see them go QB early, and then LB. I'd go with WR in later rounds. I'm surprised no one has mentioned CB. I know it seemed like we had a glut of them at one time, but we definitely need help in the secondary. A replacement for Wilson and another corner would probably be prudent. Williams play this year before his injury was pretty terribad. McKelvin is what he is. Brooks could blossom but I'd still like to see them get another decent CB or two.

  3. If he's so aware of the limited talent, why does he continue to place the ball in Fitzpatrick's hands? He has two of the most dangerous weapons possible in Jackson and Spiller, yet yesterday he again tried to squeeze blood from the stone that was Fitzpatrick. I don't buy that he's coaching based on talent. He's coaching in a way that reflects his pass-first, run-after[thought] mindset. And is isn't working.

  4. And yet most folks here wanted a name coach like Wanstadt to replace Edwards. I mean we all heard if Wanny.

I will readily admit to being one of them. No question about it. I thought he'd lend some experience and creativity to a defense that, under Edwards, seemed uninspired and underachieving. It doesn't make me reconsider my opinion of Edwards as inadequate, but I certainly have loss faith in Wannstadt to field a competitive defense at this point.

  5. I don't buy that Wanny doesn't motivate. You can't recruit the players he recruited at Pitt without inspiring the players.

His problem seems to be that he is not a good tactician. He can get talent, but he doesn't know how to use it.

It makes me think the game has passed him by. But then I wonder if the defense he's rolling out now ever would have been effective against NFL offenses.

  6. There is no requirement for every team to have a representative, and Brian Moorman hasn't been Pro Bowl worthy in 5 years.

^ This. Unlike Major League Baseball, where each team MUST be represented in the All Star Game, the NFL does not mandate a representative for each team. Just last year, four teams - including the Bills (the Redskins, Rams, and Titans were the others) - did not have a player selected to the Pro Bowl (although London Fletcher was eventually chosen as an injury replacement).

On our squad, I'd say the player with the best shot right now is CJ. Maybe Byrd if he can make a few more big picks. McKelvin could be a starter on the KR/PR unit. I like our offensive line starters collectively but I'm not sure any of them have the 'name' power/exposure to be selections.

  7. WHY THE SECRECY ????......mario & bills should spell out the exact nature of injury/procedure...

Williams was not in attendance Wednesday – the first practice he’s missed all season – a day after The Buffalo News reported he was considering surgery on his wrist. Gailey was vague on any other details surrounding the procedure, saying he had “no idea” whether it was performed in Buffalo or in Houston, where Williams played the first six seasons of his career.

The coach said he “thinks” the procedure was performed Tuesday, but was coy about everything else when it came to Williams, as evidenced by the following exchange with reporters.

Question: When and how was the decision made?

Gailey: “I don’t know all that. They told me what happened and said he’ll be ready next week, that’s all I know right now.”

Q: So you’re not clear on exactly what the issue is with the wrist?

    Gailey: “No.”

Q: Is that Williams’ decision , or does he have to run it by team doctors?

Gailey: “I don’t know how all that’s made, I just know it happened.”

Q: Just to clarify, was it a surgical procedure? You said procedure.

Gailey: “I don’t know exactly what it was, to be honest with you. I don’t know if they did something non-invasive or invasive.

This reminds me of Lindy Ruff's vague injury list each year for the Sabres. Would this be considered an "upper body injury" under that system?

  8. On Reid - it would be nice to have a "marquee" coach in town. I wouldn't necessarily be against it, because I'm thoroughly disgusted with Chan at this point. But I'd want to see the alternatives. Of course, this would be dependent on Reid's availability and Chan being gone after this year. Knowing our FO, we'll give Chan an extension during the bye week.

On Vick - No. He may pass the "better than Fitzpatrick" test but he's prone to Losman-like fumbles and probably would not improve Buffalo's turnover ratio. I don't want Fitz but I know I don't want Vick either at this point.

  9. But, yeah, the Bills tried to screw the game in the end. But, why do they not get any credit for being in the lead in the 4th quarter? guess what... they actually had to score throughout the game to be in that situation. Shocking. What about in the 3rd quarter after the Cards scored to go up 13-9; and the Bills answered with an 80 play TD drive to take the lead? What about Byrd's 2ints? I guess he was lucky.

I agree with all of this. I expected the Bills to lose yesterday, but thankfully it looks like they have made some adjustments. I was especially pleased with the defensive line. It definitely helped facing one of the more porous o-lines in the game, but if nothing else it was a confidence booster. They took advantage of an opponent's weakness and that's what I hope they do on a consistent basis. As aforementioned, the performances of Spiller and Byrd stand out to me, as well as Mario Williams.

I can't blame some people for being skeptical though because I am too at this point. Like President Reagan said, "trust, but verify." I liked the positives that I saw out of the Bills but I still saw the boneheaded playcalling on offense and the lack of execution by Fitzpatrick that leaves me less-than-optimistic about the upcoming schedule.

  10. TBD rule number 2: Anyone the Bills beat is an inferior opponent; we were lucky; it hurts the team because we think we're better than we really are.

To be fair, considering that Feely had made an incredible kick just moments before, and the Bills offense tried to hand the Cardinals the game with that ill-advised deep throw resulting in a pick, AND the miss/partial block of Feely's near-gimme of a game winning FG, there was definitely some "luck" involved. I was thrilled just as much as the next fan at yesterday's outcome, including the performances of the D-Line, Byrd, and Spiller particularly. But the Bills tried their damndest to hand the Cardinals that game.

  11. Damn you got to the sb already?! What's your opine on the game? I'm hemming and hawing about the $60 (yeah I can be cheap sometimes B-) )

NewEgg has it on sale for $10 less, $49.99 through labor day. Check this Labor Day sale slinger. Free shipping and no NYS sales tax. Of course, it will take a week to get here, but meh. I haven't bought a Madden since '06, but after playing the demo I was pleasantly surprised. As a result, I didn't get some of the preorder prices (I think the lowest I saw was $44) but this is still better than the msrp. Good luck!
