Man I loved Joe Cribbs and Jerry Butler!

And I enjoyed watching Fergy play (he was the QB of my childhood). He was never a top guy, but he was a very good QB---despite a lot of down years for the Bills during his career. He ranks 57th all-time in passing yards and 55th all-time in passing TDs. Funny enough, Josh Allen currently has just 1 passing TD less than Fergy. So, just two more passing TDs for Josh will move him ahead of Fergy in the Bills' record books.

I remember being so upset when Chuck Knox left. But, I guess if he didn't, we might not have had Bill, Marv, Jim and the boys do what they did.

The post-game interview with Reggie McKenzie @ 10:55 in the video is priceless. [Reminiscent of the feelings of the Bills breaking the drought in 2017.]

And we often talk about the players/league being tougher back in the day. Well, apparently the refs were too. Check out the ref @ 43:19 in the video.

It was a very dark period between Chuck Knox and Marv Levy…. But it did lead to the Kelly and Bruce draft picks.

  2. Following the Jets loss in NY in Game 9 of 2022, when Allen hurt his elbow late (and still uncorked a 65 yard pass for the win that Gabe dropped), everything felt like a grind the rest of that year.  Nothing ever felt easy, despite the 7 straight wins to end the year excluding the Bengals/Hamlin game.  It always seemed like their nose was just above the water line.  Honestly, if I’m a Chiefs fan, I have to be feeling similarly right now about their current team.

For the 2024 version of the Bills, only 2-3 games that felt this way, in my view.  They were the Texans game (loss) and first Patriots game (win)… where you can’t shake the feeling that if the Bills played a middle-of-road, clean game, they win by double digits and the outcome assured by the end of the third quarter. Every game in the back half of ‘22 was that type of grind.

This year has felt more like watching a Brady-led Patriots team for the most part.  Just a surgical blood-letting.  My Broncos friend told me how proud he was of his team, giving the Bills a scare. I let him take the moral win… but I’m thinking “31-7, 42 minutes of possession time, more than doubled them in yards, what’s he talking about”.  We completely dominated them, but I remember making similarly absurd comments about the Bills versus Brady teams during that era.

I’d submit this version of the Bills has some of that vibe and certainly not the vibe of the second half of 2022.  That team was strangely exhausting.

Stop Henry and force them to throw.

Stuff the box, keep Lamar in the pocket, and let’s take our chances. I like Allen vs Lamar in a game decided through the air.

That was generally the game plan against the Henry-Tannehill-AJ Brown Titans at peak powers.  Not saying it will “hold them down”, but I think we want to give in to a shootout though the air.  I think it’s the best game plan.  If Likely and Andrews beat us, so be it.

  4. Given this rule, if I’m a QB, I jump and “not fumble” every time I’m about to get sacked. It’s a lot of saved possessions in a season, given more manageable down and distance thereafter.

It’s why it’s a dumb rule - you are incentivizing bad behavior (essentially grounding), imo.

Okay, then back to the question. Which plays have they made, that an average NFL WR wouldn’t have made? They’ve done what’s been asked of them but it isn’t much. They’re on pace for 180 catches and less than 2,000 yards. I don’t know how we can call that above fine.

I actually don’t think we are that far apart, but I’m in shock at how open some of these targets (RB’s, WR’s, and TE’s) are running.  Not to mention, this team is always in an advantageous position - 2nd or 3rd and short.  That tells me that a lot is going right to make this look easy - scheme, run-blocking, protection, etc.  But, a lot is clearly happening as fans we cannot see, especially at the WR position, including crisp, efficient route running, run blocking (and likely some blocking after the catch), no drops, no illegal motion, no taking plays off, no making terrible decisions on option routes (looking at you Gabe).  In other words, no eye candy that you would point to as a splash play, but notion that this is plug and play… Steph and Gabe couldn’t do it and other teams aren’t doing it.

But, the eye test says “man, these guys are running wide open”.  Josh is putting the ball on target, of course, and making the right decision with the ball.  This is as wide open as I can recall our targets being on game day.  Some of this has to be very efficient route running, which we as fans would not appreciate.

Which plays have the WRs made that a replacement level guy (think Isaiah Hodgins) wouldn’t have made? Shakir’s run after the catch for the TD is the only play this year that I can think of. That’s why they’ve been “fine.” They’ve done what they have been asked to do but rarely (1 time) did something that every other average NFL player wouldn’t do.

I disagree. I think “fine” minimizes just how difficult it is for an offense to look this seamless. Everything looks easy.  I’m sure most of us have played sports who are fans.  How often have you been on teams - or faced teams - that execute on an elite level and make it look easy?  It’s rare, but especially at the professional level.

For that to be true, I’d submit that the pieces in aggregate aren’t “fine”.  They are doing their jobs extraordinarily well, and most likely, the pieces fit together uniquely symbiotically.  My hunch is that not any NFL WR can be plugged in with the same result. After all, Diggs and Gabe, in the same offense, made everything look hard and it was a grind even in the back half of last year.

I respectfully disagree with the assessment of “fine”.  When it looks this easy, the pieces are fitting uniquely well.

I'm beginning to believe that it doesn't really matter who we ever bring onto this team..........the fans are going to hate every signing, every prospect, everything........no player is ever good enough for you guys.

I heard that neither kids or pets trust Claypool.

    PASS.

Plenty of 7th rounders are throwaways,  but nice to see an absolute physical specimen that is right now just raw materials.  Guy can move like a tight end at 6’7” 300+.  Kid ran a 4.79 which is incredible and clocked above 20mph as well.  Great type of guy to have on practice squad and develop and see what he can become.  Will need strength and a lot to learn but a good gamble to take this late.

Given how raw and athletic he is, I wonder about TE or FB rather than T.  Put the ball in his hands.
