  1. There are some good quarterbacks out there in free agency.

    Such as?

I agree with you in principle. Thad Lewis is a back-up, not a back-up plan. But I'm not exactly wowed by the QB FA class. It is ultra rare to have a starting caliber QB hit the open market.

Schaub, Vick, Cassel, McCown? Those guys are old and going to want to start immediately and would cost too much to ride the pine (IMO) if indeed EJ puts a chokehold on the job.

  2. some nice drafts here- I like how you guys think. Here's a little something different

    Pick 9: CJ Mosley LB

Pick 41: Marcus Roberson CB (Tempted to go with Tiny Richardson OT here, but his knee scares me, and Roberson too good to pass up)

    Pick 73: Martavis Bryant WR

    Pick 105: CJ Fiedorowicz TE

    Pick 137: Aaron Murray QB

    Pick 169: Michael Schofield OT

Pick 201: Avery Patterson S (Would've taken Colt Lyerla here, but already picked a TE, so I'll go with another Duck.)

Looks like they'll have to address the OL in free agency. Sign Eben Britton and Rodger Saffold. Both can play T or G and should be relatively cheap and substantial upgrades. Let them duke it out with Hairston and the FAs already signed during the year to solidify the line.

  3. fair enough. around the combine there were rumors an offer was being finalized to present to his agent. you might see his name come up soon.

Rumors that I am hearing- they're working on extending Chandler, Dareus, Carpenter, and Aaron Williams. Oh wait, the AW one came true. So hopefully in the near future these others come to fruition as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining or anything, just swear we heard this line the last couple of years, word for word.

Last year I thought Whaley far more subdued in describing his approach to free agency. Not gonna look it up right now, but IIRC, Whaley did say the had a prime target (who turned out to be Manny Lawson- signed at the onset of free agency). But he also said something along the lines of, "We have a list of players that we think can/will sign when the dust settles," meaning that they weren't going to be "aggressive" per se, but let the market come to them. Anyway, I think it's all just a way of saying, we are picking our spots and doing what we need to do to get it done.

Whether or not that's "aggressive" is up to interpretation, and Whaley admitted as much. However, this year just felt like more of an "aggressive" statement than last year's, IMO, especially since he used the word itself, and I don't recall him using that type of language last. Maybe he said "priority," idk.

You are surprised we didn't extend chandler? Really? Really? He's he worst tight end in the league. I'll be very happy once he's officially gone in the upcoming weeks

I wish you happiness in all your other endeavors, because I think you are going to be disappointed wrt Chandler.

FWIW, I heard some of Whaley this morning on the radio, and when he was asked about drafting a big WR or big TE, I think he only mentioned a hypothetical "big receiver" in his response. Of course that could encompass a TE, but if I am remembering that right, I don't think he mentioned TE specifically in his response. Perhaps a subconscious tell.

  4. Or maybe Timmy is fishing for retweets.

I don't think he'd tweet that out of the blue.

Plus, while I don't claim to have "sources" per se, I did hear from a person I have no reason to doubt that the cause of the season ticket invoice delays is that they were finalizing a termination of the Toronto series. I don't think it's a particularly well-kept secret.

My guess based on what I've heard is that it will be announced that the series is put on hiatus for this year, but that they will then subsequently kiss it goodbye for good.

  5. I've wavered since I made the OP.

I was initially thinking that if you're trading up, you gotta get a QB. Especially when you're losing out on the subsequent picks. And my gut says take Manziel. His size and character concerns me, but there's just something about Texas QBs and an aura about him in particular.

Bridgewater seems the safest- high floor and seemingly high ceiling with a ton of natural skill. But again my gut just tells me he projects to be an average to above average starter. A guy that won't lose you games, but maybe not win a lot of games for you in the clutch.

Bortles just seems to keep getting better and proving doubters wrong every chance he gets. He may wind up being the best of the three. But I'm not going to trade up for him when he doesn't seem to have as high of a ceiling as Manziel. When you're going for broke, you might as well swing for the fences.

Carr is another interesting prospect, but cant't imagine selling the farm for a guy who more than likely would be there at 9 - or even in a trade down scenario.

So back to my gut. Manziel definitely a boom or bust type of guy, but he seems to have a intangible "badass" quotient (I mean that in a good way), and I do think he will be driven by his haters/doubters. So if I had to choose a QB, I think I'm going with Manziel.

If Manziel is gone and I've got the #2 pick, I think I'm bypassing the other QBs (as tough as it would be) and taking Mack. Mack might not be as good of a pass rusher as Clowney, but he can do so much so well that he might be the perfect pick for ANY team. Having a guy on your defense that basically has no weakness and can line up basically anywhere is the key to a modern defense. Especially a defense like the Bills with studs at all three levels. They say modern offenses are predicated on creating mismatches, but when a defense can truly dictate, that's when they become elite.

Trading up to me means I've got be looking long and hard at QBs, considering you've dug yourself a hole if it doesn't pan out. However I've come to agree with Mayock in thinking Mack is the best overall prospect in the drat. Honorable mention goes to Sammy Watkins. I like Greg Robinson and the OTs, but with Glenn, I think taking a tackle that high is a waste of a resource. Especially with Hairston reportedly good to go this spring.

  6. So--I don't know if anyone has made this prediction yet, but allow me--next Wednesday, March 12, Byrd will resign with the Buffalo Bills, and will be the highest paid safety in the game.

I think you're on to something here, and if it weren't for Revis making so much damn money he might wind up being the highest paid DB in the league.

If he does not sign with the Bills, I think we'll see him signing a contract FAR higher than any of us would imagine offering him. Hell, even if he signs with the Bills it will still be far higher than most would think is reasonable.

  7. Let's pretend that the Bills trade up in the draft. You're the GM, and it's up to you to pick the player that most helps the franchise.

Disclaimer: I'm not advocating that the BIlls trade up, but I'm curious to see who we think are the most "can't miss" picks in this draft, and also who we think would help the team the most if we had our pick of the litter.

Scenario 1: The Bills trade this year's first round pick, next year's first round pick, and this year's second round pick for the #1 overall pick.

Who do you take with the #1 overall pick?

Scenario 2: The Bills trade this year's first round pick and next year's first round pick to move up to #2 overall.

Who do you take with the #2 overall pick? Assuming, of course, that your first choice is taken #1 overall.

Bonus follow-up question: As long as we're pretending, would your answers change if the Bills had the #1 or #2 overall pick in the draft without trading up? That is, do you pick a different player knowing that you don't have a first rounder next year than you would have selected if you didn't have to give anything up?

Before I post my answers, I'm curious to see what other people think.

  8. Wow...I can't believe Jeremy said that because he's a pretty major follower of this team...I can't see how any Bills fan would not be at least a little interested in this story if it's all true...I think the die-hard fans, like the one's that listen to sports talk radio, would be ultra-interested...I know I'm a bit more fanatical than most Bills fans...To me this is an absolutely HUGE story...Again if in fact it is true...I think it strikes at the heart of what many Bills fans fear most about this organization...That it's permanently mired in the corporate mediocrity created by it's owner years ago...And that it's that mediocrity keeping the Bills from fielding a winning team, and building a culture of excellence...But maybe that's just me... B-)

You can read the exchange here:

  9. and i'm not completely sold on the story being false...but he's the only one reporting it...

Whats weird is that it hasnt been mentioned on wgr - you know, the official station of the Bills.

Someone asked Jeremy White via twitter why it wasn't and his reply was that he didn't think it was that interesting to fans. Really? Because there's a huge thread here, nearly 40 pages on the bills message board, and people discussing it all over twitter.

White also said its basically a "he said, she said" scenario. Uh, even if it was 100% corroborated, the essence of the story is still "he said, she said." That is, true or not, it boils down to Whaley/Marrone saying, "I can't do my job" with Littman/Overdorf saying, "Yes, you can."

I know Murph is a paid shill going on about Byrd not being a difference maker, but that's during the Bills paid program. I would expect Joe B and the rest to be a little more objective. Just today or yesterday Joe B was talking about how they can't afford Byrd and Aaron Williams. Sure they can. The cap situation looks great for the foreseeable future, and if things change, well, then cross that bridge when they come to it. I understand philosophically not wanting to tie up say $15 million/yr on two safeties, but if you can afford to do so - as the Bills can, why not?

I mean the morning show has them going on and on about all sorts of hypotheticals and pie in the sky trade proposals but they don't even mention a sourced story about their arguably #1 draw? Something's fishy.

Scouts and coaches have been aggravated with decisions made by chief financial officer Jeffrey C. Littman (with the team since 1986), senior vice president of football administration Jim Overdorf (with the team since 1986) and senior vice president of communications Scott Berchtold (with the team since 1989).

    OH SNAP!
