  1. I'd take in no particular order Hue Jackson, Sumlin, Freeze, Bevell and I could be convinced with a few other offensive minded guys

Edit: In addition to Malzahn, who would be my first choice. But I wonder about the oncoming bloodbath of coaching fires. Rivera could be out and he could find himself wanting to be reunited with Cam.

  2. Leaving the o line in one on one matchups will allow the D to squat on the quick hitters and tee off on Orton.

We saw that with Chan- if there was a penalty or a run for no gain or a drop, the drive would stall. I'm exaggerating somewhat, but they basically had no plays for 3rd and long.

The reason screens worked better out of the spread was that they had a more athletic line, and that the d line had their ears pinned back to rush Fitz.

If they want to spread it out more frequently, we're gonna see even more hits on Orton. With EJ as the backup, I don't know how often the should really be hanging Orton out to dry.

The o line was noticeably better overall against the Vikes (moreso in the run game than pass pro). They did seem gassed at the end. Next week will be a tough test, but hopefully theyll continue to gel and develop.

  3. Defenses still key on CJ and now that they have a competent QB, that attention Spiller receives will open up stuff for other players.

Yeah, Chan got better stats with Spiller, but let's not forget that "creative" offense got stymied on third down all the time because they basically had 3 plays: RB screen, RB draw and a 5 yard pop to the TE or slot WR.

I realize the defense often didn't do much to help, but all those Spiller stats still only got them 6 wins with Chan. Yes, I think Hackett should be getting more out of Spiller, but as long as they continue to win games, I'm not going to get too bent out of shape about it.

EDIT: And before anyone chimes in; I checked and saw that Chan's 3rd down conversion rates were middle of the pack and have been worse so far with Hackett- I'm gonna go ahead and trust my gut that garbage time might've inflated that stat for Chan and that EJ and last year's QB carousel have deflated it for Hackett. Either way, I don't have time to check the splits now, but the main point remains that the Bills seem trending upward offensively regardless of how Spiller is performing.

  4. Here, you touch on my problem/concern with Hackett. Too many people blame CJ for not running better up the middle, or maybe it's the Guards. Pears is abysmal. 3/5's of our line was changed this summer. Stevie was too erratic, so he was traded. EJ is horrible... benched.

Pears, Urbik, Stevie, CJ... all looked great in Chan's offense. Suddenly, they all suck? We were a mid-ranked offense under Chan. Now, with better players (supposedly) we're ranked 27? At some point, the coaching staff have to look at themselves.

The biggest difference IMO btw Chan and Hackett wrt to the running game is that even tho opposing defenses were squatting on Fitz's short passing game, the defense was still stretched horizontally- so there was more space for the running game. The line still wasnt all that good in pass protection, Fitz just got the ball out quickly. The screen game was more effective too, because the d line pinned their ears back to pass rush against the spread.

Against EJ, DCs can stack the box and cheat toward the run bc EJ hasn't shown he beat them through the air on a consistent basis.

It's certainly a valid argument to say Hackett could/should scheme more to create space for the run game, but EJ would still be an/the issue because a. he's generally inaccurate on short throws (which also lack velocity- allowing the coverage an extra split second to recover), b. he seems to panic when the first read isn't wide open, and c. he doesn't or can't anticipate when/where receivers will be open.

Basically, I think the line is more or less the same, it's just that defenses were playing differently because of EJ. The scheme is limited by EJ, and EJ's execution limits the overall production.

  5. I blame this on Hackett. And EJ's comments this week confirm that in my my mind. His new attitude, "I'm going to go out there and let it rip," "do what I can do." Why wasn't he doing that already? He was never given permission to do that.

Coming into the game Manuel for the season averaged just over six yards an attempt. On Sunday he literally threw caution to the wind and averaged 8.75, his highest single game average this season.

“When I looked to the sideline and saw my guy over there and I see coach saying, ‘Hey let’s just go out there and play. It’s just like practice, just go out there and let it fly,’ it helps.”

  6. Houston never shut down our running game. our own coaching staff shut it down. that's what has me angry with the way they do things. We were still making positive gains on the ground, there was no reason to abandon it, but yet they did.

I'm not really talking about them shutting down the running game; I'm talking about them crowding the box, leaving the outside WRs in single coverage or with only one safety deep. I'm not saying they should never run into the teeth of that, but why wouldn't you expect your first round QB to make some deep or intermediate throws with all that space available? The WRs are talented enough. I'll wait for the all-22 to verify, but my beer goggles saw beatable coverage and WRs open or coming open all game.

  7. Normally on a screen you throw the ball and get linemen out in front. This was a pass in the flat. Watt can cover up to 11' with his jump. His catching radius is on par with Megatron. That makes EJ put a ton on loft to throw it over Watts head to Fred. By the time the ball clears over & lands with Fred does he even have time to catch & turn upfield? EJ tried to made the throw around Watt, the ball was snagged around 8-1/2 to 9' high. My thoughts are Fred should have adjusted his route to be parallel to EJ in the flat being that Watt intersected the original flight path.

My problem is poor play design & scheme. So the Bills wanted one of the best play makers at the DE position to be in-between Fred & EJ unblocked. Henderson needed to stick Watt. If Watt fell back to cover Fred EJ could tuck & run for the first using Henderson to wall off Watt.

My mistake- I just re watched it, you're right.

EJ should've ate it or looked elsewhere because they were all over that play from the jump. The DB is crashing in on Fred and EJ stared Fred down.

So yeah, how can they not make stupid play calls when they're forced to make single read throws for the QB?

  8. You know what though? In different circumstances I may agree. Houston didn't force us to stop running. Hackett quit on it on his own. We were averaging between 3-4 yards a carry, which is decent and not something to abandon. But Hackett did. It's not like a better team said yep we're going to shut down your running game, now you pass, it was a case where Hackett thought he could outsmart everyone. To run the ball only 22 times in a game when your running game is moving at a decent YPC clip, is an idiotic move. The score wasn't so out of reach where you had to abandon the run.

Your argument for this particular game about the run game just doesn't pass the sniff test.

Do you think if EJ made a play or two that there would've been more runs called? You're not asking them to run every down, right?

    Sorry, I'm not trying to turn this into an EJ thread but when the QB makes such a significant impact on the game, it's disingenuous to ignore that when discussing the play calling;

  9. I'm losing some of my patience with Hackett, as I think he can do better. But I still don't think he's outright bad or in over his head or whatever his critics are claiming. I think he's hardly asking anything of EJ and EJ still isn't delivering. I don't know what else he can draw up for a guy who seems to finesse every throw and can't read defenses.

And furthermore- I know a lot on here don't like Marrone either, but I'm sure he and Hackett come up with the gameplan together. I'm sure they discuss in-game and halftime adjustments together. Marrone is a rookie HC but he's been around the block. I'm sure they both planned on running the ball more assuming (hoping) EJ could do something to get the Texans to stop crowding the line.
