  1. I think that it is very possible that all four of the top defensive players will be on the draft board when we select at number three. Carolina was set on Andrew Luck, especially after the way Jimmy Clausen performed this year. Since Luck is not declaring there is a very good chance that the Panthers select AJ Green with the first overall pick. Steve Smiths performace continues to decline and they need a deep threat in the passing game. Secondly, there is a strong chance that the Denver Broncos go with Patrick Peterson. Champ Bailey has expressed that he is not interested in staying with the Broncos and is looking to transition to safety in attempts to prolong his NFL career. If this scenario takes place then we will have our choice of Nick Fairley, Da'Quan Bowers, Marcell Dareus, or Robert Quinn.

Dareus is a beast. Fairley is too, but for some reason I think Dareus is going to be real good in the NFL. Imagine our DLine being Williams, Troup and Dareus. I think the D would vastly improve right there. Add in Merriman and a new LB or 2, and Id say were almost good to go.

  2. Using our simulator and setting all needs to P2 yields best available players at each pick:

    Marcell Dareus DE34 Alabama

    Ryan Kerrigan OLB34 Purdue

    Colin McCarthy ILB Miami (FL)

    Christian Ponder QB Florida State

    Randall Cobb WRS Kentucky

    Chris Hairston OT Clemson

    James Brewer OT Indiana

    Wow. I'd take that...Astro

Who did we get with seattles 4th??

  3. He's gone. Just got back from vet. House is so empty without him it's surreal. The vet was crying when she came in the room ... that's how much she cared for him. She apologized for not being professional, and I told her "no, that's why I chose you to do it. Because I knew you cared." Yes, I stayed in the room. Couldn't imagine it any other way. He looked so peaceful after, very much like he was still with us. Then she carried him away wrapped in a powder blue blanket, everything covered but his head. Very much like someone clutching a newborn. I'd take him back in a heart beat.

Sorry to hear that man, but you did the right thing for the guy. I got a 1.5 year old cat and i already cant imagine having to do it. Good luck and remember Vlad for how he was!

  4. I find the term gross, unless you like horse/dog/cattle sex.

Is not a stud a broken down Animal put out to pasture and it's days are over?

Why is a collage player a "stud"? Is T henry are best "stud" we ever had?

When did poop become a term to describe fecal matter??

Huh? Huh? Think about that one....

  5. Poz is 9th in the NFL in tackles, and Whitner is 10th. Thats all i gotta say about this topic.

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=TACKLES&conference=null&season=2010&seasonType=REG

    Good point.

Huge number of tackles often means that you and your teammates stink, and can't get off the field because every drive there are about 10-15 tackles made instead of 3-6. Just sayin'.

    Good point.

Fact of the matter is, having a high # of tackles is not indicative of how good of a football player you are. When you look at the list, there are plenty of guys who are way better players than Whitner or Poz ranked way lower on this list. Im not saying either are bad, but Poz certainly isnt better than Ray Lewis, or Jonathan Vilma, or Brian Urlacher.

I like both of them and hope we lock them both up. But because they are amongst the league leaders in tackles, doesnt mean they are top tier guys either.

  6. Ryan Mallett, Andrew Luck, Chris Ponder, etc. do NOT play defense. Every NFL team's first priority is to match up against teams in their division. That means the Bills need to be able to stop New England (Tom Brady) and New York (Mark Sanchez, et. al.). IMO, the Jets are the bigger threat long term with youth all over the offense. So, acquiring an elite pass rusher (or two) and a LB corp that can defend the run must be the primary concern followed closely by the O-Line. For example, Chris Spielman was brought in by AJ Smith (Dir. of Pro Personnel) to stop Curtis Martin. Anything else he did was a bonus.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the AFC East is evolving in to an elite tight end division? So getting an athletic strong safety and/or OLB is an absolute must. Nix took a flier on Merriman and must have thought that winding him up on 3rd and 7+ with one purpose in mind, kill the QB, was a good idea. I cannot fault him for trying.

Scoring 30+ points in a loss is getting old. There are aspects of this team that remind me of the 1989 team that found its offensive identity in a playoff loss...34-30 (Ronnie Harmon drop game). http://www.billszone.com/mtlog/archives/2004/01/01/1989_buffalo_bills_bickering_bills.php

The difference in that team was they already had Bruce, Biscuit, Conlan, and Kelso established and some emerging CBs on defense. The offense, for most of the year, was similar to what we see in this version of the Bills. Kelly finished the year with 25 TDs and 18 INTs...nothing spectacular.

The message is be patient and let Buddy Nix fill in the gaps. It may take 3-4 years but the focus needs to be on competing inside the AFC East first.

Side Note: Ryan Leaf's first game was against the Buffalo Bills...he won...and then he won the next game. Anyone can be the "Next Ryan Leaf" if they are drafted in to the wrong situation and asked to do too much.

Anyone can be the next Aaron Maybin as well.

I agree we need Defense, but wouldnt you say with all those "good offenses" you just rattled off, maybe we should draft some better offensive guys so that they have to gameplan around us for once? The offense has been stellar the last few weeks, but this year is a PERFECT opportunity to draft a 1st rd QB, as we wont have to just throw him to the wolves. Let him develop.

All I mean is that why cant we make those teams draft around us for once? We are well past due for this. QB should still be priority #1 this offseason, and LB and DE priority 2 and 2b. I agree that there is alot of good TE in our division, so why would we miss the boat and not get one too?

There are still many holes to fill on this team, But for the first time in a while, I really feel like were on the right path.

EDIT: And for the record I hope Fitz is the answer at QB, but this team has been devoid of a good QB for so long, lets take a guy and keep the fire lit under fitz, and groom a guy who at worst should be a good backup, and at best will be our QB for years to come. Shore up the most important position in sports

  7. The Bills were penalized for picking up Merriman? And they lost their 1st round pick? Much less for cheating?

LOL! The Pats got penalized for illegally videotaping. And Goodell gave them the harshest punishment allowed.

Harshest allowed? Show us where it says you can't be suspended for cheating. I find that hard to believe.

I agree a suspension was in order.

  8. Press conferences are filled with empty rhetoric and posturing.

He postured that he was ready.

Its silly to be upset with him over empty rhetoric. The real question is how trained medical personal miss the injury.

If he is acting as a coach it could be helpful. It definitely seems like Edwards can use all the help he can get. Based on the way Merriman presented his comments in the press conference he seems to have his wits about him and say the right thing.

I really don't think it seems likely that he is invested in this team if he is really out for the year unless he is trying to prove his worth as a LB coach.

I am not upset with him at all. I am not the one paying him to sit, and I never believed he would stay in Buffalo longer than he had to anyways, so from my perspective its nothing lost/nothing gained.

The 2nd part of the sentence is 100% true. You would think that thats something they would find pretty quick and easy, once he started making "football moves" and cuts. That part does concern me a bit- I mean how hard was this physical to pass? Maybe they needed something to help the fans stay on board at that time, and were willing to overlook a few things to get the name. My guess is we'll never know, but to get injured almost immediately when you step on the field, raises plenty of red flags, not just with Merriman.

  9. The type of injury he has takes a long time to heal, and can be very tough to come back from. I doubt he lied. After rehab, the only way to find out if the injury has healed enough is to go out on the practice field and find out. When he did, he discovered that it's not ready. In the meantime, he has value because he's been successful enough to understand the finer points of rushing the passer from the linebacker position, and young enough to relate to the linebackers on the roster. If the injury heals up enough for him to play this year, he'll provide an extra punch in passing situations as a rush linebacker. If the injury doesn't heal, then he's most likely done. The 2011 season is still in doubt, so no one is planning anything beyond the end of this year.

I know its a tough injury, but you have to know its not ready. No one knows their body like the person, and its not like he practiced for 2 weeks and then it happened. It happened his first day back. He said in his press conference hes ready to go. There is no way he didnt know this was still there, and a major issue.

I would have rather seen Darryl Talley come in. For $1.8m for a couple months work, I'm sure he would have

  10. The bad news is that the Denver Broncos are being investigated for videotaping a 49ers practice last month in London. The worse news is that the Broncos still lost the game.

Ill bet The Broncos and McDaniel get double the penalties the Patriots* did too. Just because they were the Patriots* and theyre the Broncos.

  11. Merriman was brought in mostly to be a mentor for the younger guys, and reports are that he's doing just that. I think that playing would have been an added bonus, but that's looking highly unlikely at this point.

Merriman was brought in to play, and help one of the weakest LB corps in the NFL, not give pointers to the young guys. He told us he was ready to play, and obviously he lied.

  12. Im not sure where you draw the comparisons to Fiedler, at all. Fiedlers best TD year was 20, while throwing 19 INT, and 3290 yds (in 16 games). His QB rating was never above 85.2, which would put him at #21 in the league this year. And that was his highest career rating, by 5 pts.

In comparison this year Fitzy is 18-9 TD/INT, 88.1 rating in his first real starting gig, and is 39 yds shy of 2k, in just 8 games.

In reality, there is no comparison between the 2.

  13. Why does it matter? We clearly found our QB in Fitzpatrick. Why can't Bills fans appreciate something good when we have it?

    +1

    +2

I cant believe someone started a VY thread (well, i guess I can believe it). Young is not very good. Im not sure I would call him bad, but he is not nearly as good as Fitzy. Not even close actually.

  14. I am all on board with Defensive help. But let me ask you this: I have been reading many (very) early mock drafts, and it seems the consensus #1 TE is Kyle Rudolph out of ND. I have only seen 1 or 2 that have him going in the 1st round. If we pick, say 4th, and we get Mallett or a LT with our 1st pick and Rudolph is still on the board rd 2, do you grab him? It would be either the 6th or 7th best pass rusher in the draft, or the top TE prospect. Id have to say w/ TE being a position of need, albeit not as much as pass rusher, you would have to really consider it. And it seems this may be a real possibility. Of course, this is all subject to, and very well may change, but Id say the top TE prospect > 6th best pass rusher. Thoughts on this?

Just trying to make some discussions outside the topics of Fitz/Stevie/Lee Evans sucks
