  1. Moving up to top 10 would have required packaging a trade, losing another pick, which indeed could have been done. My larger point was not really about the Watkins trade, it is that these guys always seem to be in the glass is half empty crowd, stirring the pot, as Lurker says, but from a pessimistic point of view. I understand and value the need to be critical, as VABills is in that last post, but it seems these guys are always coming from that angle.

  2. I've seen some discussion of this before. Forgive me if I am repeating a topic. A lot of people seem to find Jerry Sullivan negative. I am in Rochester, and we have Sal Maiorana, Bob Matthews, Leo Roth, and Scott Pitoniak as sports reporters/announcers/hosts that I find negative about the Bills quite a bit.

Yesterday, for example, Pitoniak was rehashing the Watkins trade, arguing that it wasn't worth it, that the Bills could have had Beckham, etc. His co-host, Dan Borrello pointed out that it was more likely that the Bills would have drafted Ebron, a first year bust. I would add, that then we would not have Watkins, not have a true #1 WR at all because we would have drafted Ebron. We also would not have Clay. We would still need a #1 WR and #1 TE, and, as Pitoniak's co-host also pointed out, this year's draft class is weak, maybe 18 deep for true first round value. We would be drafting right about then, getting probable second round value from a first round choice.

But, instead, we do have Watkins (and Clay), and we still have a second round pick in 2015, a good value.

I think we need new, younger people writing and talking sports in Western New York. All these older guys are jaded by the past fifteen years and are so negative it makes it difficult to listen to them. Borrello and anther younger guy in Rochester, Dan Moriarty, might be the new guys.

  3. Might be crazy, but I can see this as analogous to the Allman Brothers Band: Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. Both knew whose name was was on the band, but Dickey could really play, too. Imagine the defensive meetings . . .

Schwartz: "So this is the gameplan with a 4-3."

Ryan: "I've noticed they like to do this (insert tendency) when they are are 2nd and short. What do you think of doing this (insert defense) and really mess that up, but it comes from a base 3-4. We could use these guys (insert). I bet they have never seen that before!"

Schwartz: "That's funky, But let's do it this way!"

Sometimes competition (especially with these types of guys) can be a good.

  4. This game was lost by the offense and special teams, although even the special teams played well at times. Kick offs and punt coverage were good, McKelvin's fumble was bad. The fumble into the end zone and Orton's missed throws in the end zone were pretty bad. I thought the offensive coaches called an okay game with a couple of excetions, but I won't pick on them, Really, the players lost this one. Buffalo, nor any team, is gonna win many games only scoring 13 points.

  5. Do you think EJ watches the game, just watches the same thing we did? If he does, he HAS to see the weaknesses being discussed. You would think he would see himself aiming the ball and just let it go! I'm afraid if he doesn't he will be saving the interceptions and his body for the bench. It won't matter. I really hoped he would make it, but he plays very timidly.

  6. Sums it up pretty well.

EJ is regressing. He has yet to have one of those "oh wow" games where you at least see glimpses of potential studliness. Hes either average or horrible which in total equals a below average QB.

    ^This

The only thing is EJ would look better if the 3-4 passes Watkins and Chandler dropped were caught. . . Not good, but better.

  8. They were talking about it on mike and mike. Of course, they said it was irrelevant since they were playing buffalo!

I can't wait for the day Buffalo can shut the media guys up, both national media and local. I am soooo tired of our local guys (in Rochester we have Roth, Maiorana, and Matthews, et al.) always being down about Buffalo. It is almost as if they enjoy telling us how bad the team is gonna suck again this year. At least at the start of the season they could look at the glass as half full for a change. It is enough to make me really dislike them. And the same guys have been around forever, selling the same tired views. Yeah, I know it has been fourteen years. You don't have to remind me every other day. :wallbash:

  9. I picked the full season choice, but I guess it really depends on the size of the struggle.

If EJ looks bad for a game and throws a couple picks, it's not time to panic. If he looks like a bottom-tier QB for a few weeks in a row, I wouldn't blame the staff for trying to save their jobs.

If EJ does have trouble, winning a few more games later in the season isn't going to matter. This whole staff is riding EJ, for better or for worse. There's an old saying: you dance with the one you came with. If he plays well, they all have a good chance of staying with the new owner, and our team should do well. If EJ plays poorly, Orton coming in, in week 7 to have the team go 8-8 isn't saving anyone. Let's just give him the year. Everyone will know then what is what. I don't see the point in putting Orton in unless there is an injury.

  10. I'm quickly getting driven from this board. How many of these can there be? I came here because I've been an out of town bills fan all my life, I have no ties to WNY, I got Erie, PA networks as well as Cleveland networks where I grew up, and sided with the bills as a child despite my entire family being Browns fans, and most of my friends being bandwagon fans of whoever was good at the time. I've spent my life completely isolated. I came here to finally talk BB football with anyone else who gave a crap about who the 5th WR was. I've gotten some of that, but now 95% is nothing but EJ bashing. I root for him just like i do the bills, mostly because of the underdog angle for both. I just can't take it, its beyond my comprehension why so many people can be so fiitself on the negative before the season starts. The one thing I can say for sure from living in the Cleveland area is that running coaches and QB's out of town the first time they don't live up to your expectations WILL NEVER WORK! Please do not continue on this carousel, because it only denies you what you should crave most, which is a functional franchise that competes for championships not high draft picks. Negativity breeds itself, and its gotten like the population of China around here.

    Go EJ! Go Bills!

I added the bold typeface. But I, too, seem to find the negativity alarming. For years, we have wanted Buffalo to draft a QB. Now, after ten games . . . TEN GAMES!!!! . . . many of you want to run EJ out of town. Does it matter that, as has been brought up numerous times, Kelly didn't look great his first season? I can remember when the NFL wisdom was that it took about four years to develop a quarterback. They rode the bench, watched and learned, and slowly got mixed in through injury, then, eventually, they became starters. This has been brought up before, too. But some just won't let it go. The process is faster now; more college teams run pro offenses, I know. But ten games in? Be real. Bashing a young NFL QB for being a little nervous is not being a fan. a fan would encourage him. That doesn't mean that after another season people shouldn't be expecting better play, but ten games, and a preseason spent testing OL personnel at various positions, etc. Wow, just wow.

  11. Tim Graham@ByTimGraham 31s

One source tells me Bills considered Mallett internally. But another source tells me no actual trade talks occurred. Focused on Orton.

So is this another case of the Bills being silly because they would even consider trading for Mallett, but if they hadn't even considered it, they would be inept for not looking at all the options available? Do I have that about right?

  12. I just watched EJ's post game press conference, and I've followed his progress since we drafted him. I like this kid. He seems like an earnest young man that needs one thing: confidence. I'm a golfer (11.6 now but used to play to a 7.1), and I know that in both the long game and short game, if I feel like I'm hitting the ball well, I hit the ball well. I don't steer the ball on long shots, and the putts are going to go in. This kid needs to play, and he needs a little success. Someone said let's see what happens when the line comes together with Glenn and Williams. I want to see that, too. And I want to see complete games with real game plans. If it were us in there, we would want a fair chance.

  13. At this point, it is very difficult to predict wins and losses for the season. So much depends on EJ. The defense will be solid; I think we all agree on that. Mostly, this season will turn on whether EJ starts to read defenses better, see the field better, and become more composed because of it, which will increase his accuracy. If EJ matures, the Bills will be much improved:

    09/07 @ Chicago Bears - WIN

    09/14 MIAMI DOLPHINS - WIN

09/21 SAN DIEGO CHARGERS - WIN

    09/28 @ Houston Texans - WIN

    10/05 @ Detroit Lions - LOSS

10/12 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS - WIN

    10/19 MINNESOTA VIKINGs - WIN

    10/26 @ New York Jets - LOSS

11/09 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS - WIN

    11/13 @ Miami Dolphins - LOSS

    11/23 NEW YORK JETS-WIN

    11/30 CLEVELAND BROWNS - WIN

    12/07 @ Denver Broncos - LOSS

12/14 GREEN BAY PACKERS - LOSS

    12/21 @ Oakland Raiders - WIN

    12/28 @ New England Patriots-LOSS

    10-6, but I'm a homer :-)
