  1. track stars rarely make good football players anyways.

OJ Simpson was a track star (at one time held a world relay record in the 4x200).

Bullet Bob Hayes was an Olympic Champion and a deep threat

    Darrell Green was a track star (10.08 100 m)

Deion Sanders was a track star

Santana Moss was a track star

Elbert Dubenion was a track star

Herschel Walker was a track star

James Lofton was a track star

Willie Gault was a track star

CJ Spiller was a track star

Brian Moorman was a track star

Don Beebe was a track star

Jim Brown once ran in a track meet and then played lacrosse at the same day at Syracuse and I believe finished in the top 5 in the AAU decathlon in 1955.

There's a decent correlation between track speed and football speed.

  2. There is a swing tackle available, already living in Western NY . Adam Terry Syracuse 6-8 335. Can play both Right & Left Tackle. VERY high Character guy, who if his knees are healthy would be solid depth. He started ahead of Gaither at Baltimore, and was signed when Pears was released by Jax.

    Worth a try Buddy!

  3. Here is my brief analysis of the Bills stadium improvements situation.

    Buffalo Bills Payroll $100,000,000

    NYS Income Tax 5%

    Annual total. $5,000,000

    73,000 seats x 10 games x $60ave ticket price = $43,800,000

    NYS Sales Tax 8.75%

    Annual total $3,832,500

    Total annual tax revenues $8,832,500

    15 years X $8,832,500

Total of tax revenues over 15 years

    $132,487,500

NYS issues a 15 year bond for improvements in exchange for a 15 year unbreakable lease with the elimination of the Toronto game.

Tax revenues more than pay for the cost of improvements plus interest.

Without the improvements the team is gone and so are the tax revenues.

This is a revenue neutral deal that could keep the team here after Ralph's passing

I also feel my figures are very conservative.

NY State Tax for the high Income folks is .06875. NY has a "pac-man" tax that eliminates your deductions and exemptions above a certain income level.

In addition, the visiting teams have to pay NYS Income Tax When they come to Buffalo, but the Bills pay other State Taxes when they travel unless they are NYS Residents for Tax Purposes. So if the Titans or Cowboys (Texas & TN have no state Income Tax) come to Buffalo, NY gets those taxes as well, and the Bills that live year-round in Buffalo, still have to pay their NYS Resident taxes even if they play in a no-income tax state (e.g. Florida, Tennessee, Texas).

  4. All he's going to say is "see, the top 7 players on our team wouldn't be in the top 7 of any other team" or something lame along those lines.

The one good thing I see about this thread is that for the first time in at least 5 years, our punter isn't among the top 5 players on the roster, Definite cause for hope for this charter Bills fan who attended his first game in 1960.

  5. Nix's job is to get the players. Gailey's job is to coach them. Gailey at this point in time has who he has, and he has to compensate for their shortcomings.

Yep & Buddy had a swing tackle who had started in the league, and would be a quality guy in the locker room, and guess What?"

"The Tennessee Titans have picked up some depth on their offensive line.

Free agent tackle Adam Terry has signed with the Titans, PFT has confirmed. His huge body and long hair and beard have already been spotted on the Titans’ practice field.

The 6-foot-8, 335-pound Terry was a second-round pick of the Ravens in 2005 and was an occasional starter from 2006 to 2008. He missed the entire 2009 season and played just two games for the Chargers in 2010."

Good Job Buddy the guy lives in Rochester.

    Front Office = Inept

  6. Adam Terry 6-8 335, Syracuse, Swing Tackle, backup to Jonathan Ogden, Michael Oher, and Jared Gaither is sitting right now in Rochester waiting to pick up the phone. Check back and he was the person that caused Pears to be cut from JAX. He's had two years to recover from microfracture, is a VERY high character guy, leader in the locker room. Pick up the Phone Buddy - he's sitting in your back yard, and would love to play in Upstate New York.

I tend to be a numbers guy, but I'm clueless on this one. The referenced shareholders' meeting was two days ago. Anybody got any ideas on how the Packers VP comes up with these numbers?

I suppose a small population like Green Bay has would tend to make a team's "economic impact per person" higher, but there must be more to it than that. Dallas and San Diego have much bigger populations than Buffalo, but both teams are cited as having a much greater "econmic impact per person" on their communities than the Bills do.

    I'm stumped.

I have a bit of experience in this area. What they are essentially saying is that the Packers bring and leave (and multiply through the spending cycle) that much per capita to the Green Bay Area. This probably includes TV Money, and shared Mdse revenues. Their denominator may be too small, since Green Bay is essentially the State of Wisconsin's NFL franchise, less a few Bear fans in the southern Wisconsin bedroom communities of Chicago. If they are only using the Green bay SMSA, then the denominator is skewing the result.

Ralph has a pretty sweet deal, the taxpayers are on the hook for most of his physical plant, and he doesn't live in Buffalo, so any money he takes out doesn't stay in WNY.

In addition I wouldn't be surprised if Central Ontario, all the way to the Toronto Metro area is included in the denominator, which adds millions of people to our market size, yet we don't see a lot of dollar benefit from that population.

Dallas has huge merchandising and corporate box rentals, and San Diego is the only So. California NFL team, so they benefit from that.

These economic impact studies are all subjective, and depend a lot on how you define the market, what multipliers you select, and what you include and don't include.

  8. My favorite nickname I've read so far is "The Mammoth".

The other option is how hard would it be to collapse a pocket if he played center?

Do love the wedge buster idea, and have him play either goal line FB or have him line up in an unbalanced jumbo package.

Bills better take up a collection for his fines, if he ever hits a QB, he will def get fined by this league.

  9. Gallery's Restricted but wants out of Oakland. I would not hate spending all the FA $$$$ on O-Lineman!! I think Gallery, Mankins, Light would all be perfect fits. Possibly Free if not franchised!! But Gallery tops my list!! Fitz deserves the best protection money can buy!! Plus we just used all of our picks on Defense. Were's the O-Love?? More specifically, O-Line love. Thats our only O-Line need. Two solid acquisitions here and we are playoff bound!

2nd Round of Baltimore in 05. Signed as Jonathan 's Ogden's replacement, but J hung on too long.

He was with Colts, Chargers, and Jags last year.

Can play LT or RT, and has played TE in a Jumbo Package

Started the year McGahee had a career season in Baltimore

Believe he's already living in Western NY (?Rochester?)

Inexpensive backup/swing tackle and VERY high character guy

Worth at least bringing to camp.

  10. In the 1963? or 64? AFL Championship game, Bills Linebacker Mike Stratten hit Chargers running back Keith Lincoln as he was trying to catch a flare pass. Stratten broke a few of Lincoln's ribs as he was knocked out of the game. Turned the whole momentum of the game in favour of the Bills. Bills win the championship. The question: In your opinion, how significant was Moats' hit on Favre last week, now that he won't start tonight?

It was '64 - "The hit heard round the world" Still the best hit in Bills History, completely changed the momentum of the game and the team.

  11. Rock Pile,

I think it was new years day 1964. Playoff game vs. Pats. Had snowed the week before. Our seats were in the "bleacher " section in center field.

Instead of shoveling the seats, it looked like they had used a bucket to press "seats" into the partly melted snow. Your seat was a hole in the ice, good excuse to stay on your feet. Weather and the Bills play were both terrible that day, but it was the last playoff game they lost for the next two seasons.

I swear that game was a principal reason why my Dad had to have his hips replaced. I also remember prying the hubcaps off the car and leaving them at home, as the neighborhood around the Rock Pile wasn't the best.

Men's lavatories at the rock pile were pretty bad as I recall.

  12. It's tough to start talking about backups. That '90s team had some good depth. Guys like Glenn Parker, Mitch Frerotte, Mike Lodish, Kenneth Davis, Frank Reich, etc. Solid depth back then.

The one name I haven't seen mentioned is Tasker. Given a choice of Reed, Lofton, Beebe, would you take Evans over Tasker, given all that Tasker could do in other aspects of the game. Kelly always said that Tasker couldn't be covered when he played for the scout team, and particularly his last two years made some huge catches as the slot or 4th wideout in the Kgun.

  13. I still vote for Jim Brown. Unmatched combination of speed, power, skill and attitude.

Just reading his background on the SU website, Three Hall of Fames, Unmatched at his position, and probably the most durable running back of all time (never missed a play in 9 years in the league).

He was a decathlete, finished 5th in the 1954 national championship with a couple of guys named Bob Mathias and Rafer Johnson ahead of him.

I believe he still holds the all-time HS basketball scoring average record for Long Island, nearly 60 years later.

    This link says it all
