1. Again, you may be right. My point is that what you said is normally very true. And you gave a perfect example in Millen at Detroit. But what I am saying is that the JP situation in Buffalo was abnormal. One would have expected what you expected, that the GM and coach were going to live or die with their guy and #1 pick. I can't recall how many posters had switched theiur mantra from TD is going to succeed or fail based on the JP Losman pick from the previous Willis McGahee pick. But then the reverse happened. MM and TD didn't show allegiance to their pick, they showed less allegiance to their pick than the man off the street who didnt pick him. That's why I don't believe your theory of JP's expectations for TD versus ML. Because all you're implying (I imagine) is that his hook will be less quick and he will give JP more time. But he already disproved that, in a glaring way.

My theory, and it is just a theory too, like yours is, is that ML and DJ will give JP a longer chance than the guys that drafted him, because they will see the talent, and they won't be scrounging to save their professional lives.

Yeah, the Losman situation was a total clusterfukk last year. They dumped Bledsoe, turned the team over to Losman, put a crappy OL together, asked Losman to be a downfield pocket passer, benched "the future franchise QB" very quickly and won a game, went with Holcomb for a while because "he just wins" until they found out "he just loses too", split the team, caused chaos and insurrection, flip-flopped back and forth ... what a complete disaster, absolute buffoonery. The situation just screams that they didn't know what the hell they were doing and panicked repeatedly.

  2. I think that Matthews might fit well on a team such as Indy or Atlanta.....an insurance policy of sorts if one of their 2 good qbs goes down. The Bills are quite a different story, whereas one of our two qbs is a complete question mark after 2 years, the other having no upside at all.

I would much rather have a young guy on the team who might amount to something than Matthews, who simply fills no need for the Bills imo.

Personally, I don't think there is really a huge difference between Holcomb and Matthews.

  3. I don't disagree about THIS description of KH, necessarily.  But, do you think Dilfer or Kitna are anything other than your description of Holcomb?

    598093

Kitna is no better than Holcomb. He's going to fumble and choke games away while making just enough plays that some fans will think he's going to turn it on any game now. Kitna is a fumbling machine, btw.

Dilfer is not a great QB, but he can manage a game if kept on a short leash. He's more comparable to Jake Plummer, I'd say. If he can hand the ball off and throw the ball to keep the defense honest, he might be OK. Ask him to take 7 step drops behind a porous line play after play, and it's going to get fugly really fast. He's a good mentor, from what I hear, so I wouldn't mind him helping out Losman to be honest. But, behind our '05 line, Dilfer would suck too. (Who wouldn't?)

  4. That's as idiotic as a Holcomb's Arm post.  He doesn't SUCK.  He is what he is.  A perfectly capable vetern backup.  He can direct the offense to wins, but it's unlikely he'll WIN games, if you get my drift.  He's better than half the back ups (and a few of the starters) in the NFL.

With that said...we ain't going far with him at the helm...and that's pretty much a known.

    598064

A team is going exactly nowhere with Holcomb at QB. Exactly. He's not close-your-eyes awful. That's not what I meant by "suck." As I said, he's just a tease. A lot of fans will start thinking he's going to "get 'er done" only to find out that he simply never gets it done. He's too limited.

It just reminds me of another sort of Bledsoe debate. People saying "just give him a chance" and "he needs more help" and on and on.

A team is going exactly nowhere with Holcomb at QB. That's all you really need to know.

  5. You can't judge Vincent's play by his numbers, as modest as they are.  The major failing of Vincent is his knack for being out of position.  It's the major failing because it was supposed to be his edge.  A veteran, athletic cover corner moves to free safety?  He should have been the next Rod Woodson.  But he did not take naturally to the position, and is more than a step late and has shown no improvement.  He is also a weak tackler who doesn't bring any lumber in the secondary, which is not unexpected.

    597936

The "next Rod Woodson"? Wasn't that just another TD sales job?

Vincent is (or was) an excellent cover corner but he's playing out of position and it shows. Woodson was a much more abrupt and physical corner and he was able to transition to safety because it suited his style. Ronnie Lott was another guy that made the switch, and that dude was ferocious.

Par for the course. The Bills seem to believe anybody can play any position like it was all some fantasy video game.

  6. JP however, has an overall advantage because of:

    1. age- Holcomb is well into the backside of his career and though he is a better player than JP he is to old to be the QB of the future.  The win now doctum of the Bills will help him get the startting nod if JP shows nothing, but if JP shows much of a sign at all of developing into a quality QB this year, my guess he gets the start.

    2. athleticism- JP appears to be far better athlete than Holcomb with faster wheels and a stronger arm.  However, JP has not shown or developed the mental ability to play the game and make calm good decisions as Holcomb often does. JP's abilities will give him a leg-up if he gets his game under control.

    3. Holcomb has never been consistent Holcomb has had a few lights out games, but never in his career has he actually produced as a QB for an entiure (or even a lot of a season).

    597780

You forgot the most important point. Holcomb sucks.

Holcomb is nothing but a tease. He makes a few odd plays here and there. The team looks sort of functional. And, then before you know it, the season is over and you've finished 5-11 or 6-10.

  7. Wasn't Losman another QB who people had mixed opinions of and who soared up some draft charts late? Reading about Cutler, it sounds all too familiar. "Overconfident in his arm. Gunslinger. Doesn't seem to understand the game at times. Poor and slow decision maker. Good athlete. Poor fundamentals. Can forget his footwork at the wrong times."

Do the Bills really need to try and develop yet another amateur QB who thinks he's the next Marino?

Not to mention he was shown up by Whitehurst in the Senior Bowl.

  8. You know what I think?  I think that we are so impatient that we do not allow a team to develop properly.  We want instant gratification, and when it doesn't come, we carp and carp and carp and carp until there is paranoia in the front office and on the sidelines (how many of you could make sound decisions with this kind of constant rabid impatience and scrutiny?) and everyone gets fired.  Then, we start all over again.  No immediate results?  No immediate wins?  Carp and carp and carp and carp.  Front office and coach fired (or resigns because of hostility of fans and city).

What is absolutely absurd about this is that this time, we haven't even given the guys a chance.  Not one day in office, before we have crucified the coach and hung Marv Levy in effigy.

I think the problem with some cities is that the fans have no patience, and they force owners and GM's to act hastily.  Fans can and do cause their own misery.  So eat your hearts out Bills fans.

I say, three cheers for Levy and Jauron.  Go get 'em fellas.  I'll judge you after three full seasons, and while I might criticize here and there, I will never go overboard and start calling for your heads until then.

    Donahoe and Mularkey agree 1000%!

  9. As for JP vs. McNown...both were acquired in odd draft day trades, they were both extremely cocky young QB's who were handed their jobs without real competition, were disliked by the veterans, had popular vets behind them on the depth chart (Miller/Holcomb), were mobile with strong arms, and were too agressive for their own good during games.  The similarities between Losman and McNown are absolutely striking.  Does Losman have time to resurrect his career?  Perhaps.  He is gonna have to win the job in competition, learn to be a leader, and learn humility.  Does Jauron have a good track record with young QB's?  Absolutely not.

    579910

Does JPL have a rep for partying all night with porn stars like McNown?

  10. Actually, this is a great point in Jauron's favor.  Mularkey took a cupcake schedule, a relatively healthy season, and some decent talent and eeked out a 9-7 season culminated by one of the most embarassing losses in Bills History.

Jauron took a decently easy schedule and a talent-deprived roster and went 13-3.  That alone should be cause for hope for improvement.  Its not luck just any bum can go 13-3 in this League, especially with a bad team, no matter how lucky they are.

Eh? A light at the end of the tunnel? :D

  11. It did work out from a FA signing standpoint (TKO, SA, LM, TV).  Spikes couldn't wait to get out of Cincy and sign with a legit organization.  Now we have the reverse situation.

You really think the players and their agents are so naive that they don't follow what's happening in a city before they consider signing somewhere?

    579756

I feel really bad for Spikes.

  12. The personnel on those Chcago teams ensured that any win was a miracle.  His Coach of the Year season doesn't count but the seasons with poor records tell all?

    :D

My original take on the coach was:

Sherman sounds pretty good even though I thought GB underachieved for the last 5 years.  I don't really want Capers.  After that I have no idea.  With Jauron....we'll see.  Like many have stated, getting quality players is more important.

    579748

And somebody with the fire-eater personality of Dick is going to rake in the great free agents, right? Or maybe it's his stellar track record of winning and building up programs? Or maybe it's those little footnotes on his "will work for bread crumbs" resume? Once stood on the sideline with Mike Holmgren and Kay Stephenson.

  13. I'm going to fuggin' puke if another person pulls that 13-3 season out of their ass. They won how many miracle games because of Mike Brown?  How many of thiose teams had winning records?

    579726

Everybody knows that fluke, luck plays falling out of the heavens like manna are 100% the result of fantastic coaching.

Look at the mind numbing great coaching his QBs got. 23 QB changes in 5 years. Some people don't change their underwear that often.
