  1. They positioned the draft for the first week of Nielson Sweeps ratings for the spring, this is important for driving advertising dollars.  Which is why it made the move several years ago.

I bet it has to do with physicals more than anything else from the GM side.  Wasting an early pick on a bum knee sucks (insert Willis McGahee joke here)

  2. you're forgetting pot is addictive. And by your fallacy-ish statement all of those whom take pain pills are addictive and destroying their bodyred herring

Boys, not saying everyone who takes it is addicted, but it is proven to be very addictive (way more so than pot) I had some after surgery and after two days, taking them as prescribed, I left a need for one and quit taking them. I can easily imagine an NFL player, with the grind and impact on their body taking them over the course of a season and struggling to quit

  3. I went through the nfl.com top 100 players of 2013 and looked up their draft round. My goal here is with the trade up scenario about giving away draft picks.

61% of the players on this list were taken in the first round and 1st round picks consist of 24 if the top 30. Second round picks are 16% of the list. It gets interesting from here. Both 3rd, 4th and undrafted players are all tied at 6-7%.

Now the value of the mid round guys are with depth and injuries are a huge part of football. However, my take is if Watkins is that generational player, give up a second and move up and get him. Don’t give up a future first.

The common argument I hear from most people is that this is such a deep draft, don’t give up picks. You could take that statement with this data and say don’t give up a high second as that is close to a first round talent in other years.

My thought is, if he is AJ Green/ Julio Jones good, get him, and since this draft is so deep, the player pool for UDFA’s will be deeper than normal and you can make up for it on the back end.

    I’ve attached the data

  4. My point is you don't let your talented players get to free agency because everyone is overpaid in free agency. You lock them up a year before they reach free agency.

there are two models to look at.

Philly, locks everyone up early to long term deals, to try to get the best they can

PIT-waits until the end and after they have proven themselves to get a contract.

With Whaley's PIT ties, I can see us using more the PIT model.
