  1. I wouldn't say it is a huge thing... but knowing that players from certain programs at certain positions have trouble in the NFL is something that could be used to break ties in my opinion.

I don't think it is totally useless information

  2. But that isn't an answer to the question I asked. I'll ask it again: Why is CJ taking himself out of games? There is no question that he does it; he said himself that he does it. [Edit: If he's truly not winded, what does that imply?]

Furthermore, even though he does it, that doesn't absolve Gailey's role in this tango. Why doesn't Gailey just tell his star to get the hell back on the field?

You have legitimate questions... the only thing I can say to them is that I don't think we are getting the whole truth on the matter from 1 Bills Dr

  3. But the puzzle of it is that CJ said that he took himself out of the game after the screen pass. So if he wasn't fatigued and as you say everyone knows it, why did he remove himself from the game? Furthermore, it's clear from the comments that Fred was NOT so obliging and did NOT remove himself from the game after CJ took himself out.

Chan actually said, "he gets winded and he comes out." Which doesn't necessarily mean that Chan thought he was winded or out of shape. Indeed, in the context of CJ's comment mentioned above, it seems clear Chan is just saying CJ took himself out of the game. The question is: Why?

I think the "gets winded" thing is an excuse Chan uses. I do not believe it is true

  4. Not trying to pile on the OP, but I agree with those who call B.S. on the notion Spiller isn't in the game b/c of his pass blocking. That doesn't explain the lack of CARRIES, nor does it explain the empty backfield sets.

Gailey has outsmarted himself with respect to Spiller, and for the life of me I can't figure out why.

The pass pro deficiencies are the only logical reason I can come up with about why he isn't on the field more. Everyone knows that fatigue is a bunch of BS and this seems to be the only thing that makes sense to me

  5. Great breakdown, though I may argue that the line may have erred in the play at 1:41. Regardless, he is poor at pass pro, but why the hell are we passing on first and 10 and 3rd and 3?

Yeah there was something wrong... not sure who messed up, but CJ should have at least hit someone.

I think CJ is an amazing back... and this is the only logical thing I can think of about why he isn't on the field more

  6. Great stuff. And I agree with our assessment entirely. CJ is slow to recognize where the pressure is coming from and can't block it in time. He also gets overpowered because his technique is somewhat lacking. Poor leverage.

I wasn't able to see any of the game but just from the looks of these stills, Fisher seemed to make it a point to pressure the inexperienced left side of our OL. Was that the case much of the game?

And you can bet Carroll and that great Seahawk front seven will be doing more of the same.

    GO BILLS!!!

Yeah I think we will see a lot of blitzing from the seahawks.... not to mention their fast DE's just sprinting around the edge

  7. Yesterday I came up with an opinion that the reason why CJ gets taken out so much is his pass protection limitations. Many people disagreed with me, so I took 4 plays from the 1st quarter of the Rams game with CJ and Fred facing similar blitz pickup assignments. I think it is clear that there is a distinct difference in the pass protection abilities of the 2 RB's.

Again this is only 4 plays, again I do not know the exact pass protection schemes... but it is something that I think we should take into consideration when trying to figure out why CJ isn't in the game more. We all know he isn't tired. I will be curious to see how the Bills use Spiller for the final 3 games, will they use him in pass protection or will we see more Choice in the backfield.

My entire breakdown is linked below.

  8. I totally disagree. I watch him in pass protection a lot and he actually is better than most RBs, especially given his size. Not to mention the high praise he has received from his teammates and coaches for really elevating his pass protection.

I feel like he may miss one and then all of a sudden fans mind set goes back to his rookie year where he was still learning how to do it and you forget all the other great blitz pickups.

I'm sorry, but I just have to completely disagree and feel like this is more speculation based on maybe a play or two rather than his overall performance and ability to pick up the blitz. Not to mention, Fred has missed his share of pass protection assigents too...why...because they are RB's going up against huge and fast lineman, ends, or LBs most of the time. It's gonna happen sometimes, but Spiller is pretty good at it and so is Fred.

that's fine we can agree to disagree... I'm always open to discussion

  9. I don't think he's that bad in pass protection at all. Is Fred better? Sure. But CJ isn't much worse than the average NFL RB.

Oh man, I disagree strongly... Fred in my opinion one of the best RB's in the NFL in pass pro. CJ on the other hand, makes mistakes and when he does pick up the correct guy he is often time overpowered and gets pushed back really easily.

whats tough, and why i havent tried to chase this personally, is its especially hard to break out and quantify what the assignments are at that point. did the line fail, did he? should he have read to stay in and block, should he have gone out, etc....

id be curious to see a real breakdown as its just about the only explanation that makes any sense at this point.

I'll see if I can do some examples later today or tomorrow w/ video from the game Sunday

IDK, Chan is using the fatigue excuse quite a bit... :wallbash:

Exactly... we all know it's not fatigue, but Chan isn't going to throw his best offensive weapon under the bus either

  10. Whether or not it is smart or not to keep him on the bench.

CJ Spiller is really bad in pass protection. Like seriously bad. Teams are starting to blitz more when CJ is in there in obvious passing situations, so not only does this prevent him from running a pattern b/c he has to stay in and block, but it also gets a blitzer matched up on a sub-par blocker. Teams do this a lot against the Saints as well... but they have Brees who can make plays better than Fitz can. It was a bigger problem than usual on Sunday b/c of all backups on the OL going against a good Rams DL.

If you get a chance watch what happens when CJ has to stay in and block... it's not pretty.

CJ definitely needs the ball more... but this is my reasoning on why he is out of the game so much.

  11. It may be intuitive to include the number of step in the qb drop, whether or not the play was a play action pass, and how long the qb held the ball.

Yeah there are a few things I could do to make them super cool.... I'd love to diagram the defense and the coverage that they are playing, but honestly that kinda stuff really takes up a lot more time because you have to re-watch so many different things. If I do it again, I'll try and tag them for play action though, that would be pretty easy

Thanks for the comments, glad people enjoyed looking at them. There are quite a few plays the Bills run all the time.

  12. I have no idea if anyone will find this stuff interesting or not. But I have diagrammed all 17 pass plays the Bills threw on Sunday.

One thing I want to say is that I do not know if there are options built into the routes or even what plays are called, this is just what the receivers ran.

Little factoid for you... of those 17 passes, 6 of them were basically screen passes.

    Comments/thoughts always welcomed.
