    What are the notes at the top of most of the plays. Can you go through the order of each. I have an idea, but on some I see 3-10 and 1-10, so I assumed first down. But then some have 3-10, then 2-5. Just trying to see which ones where good and bad. Mostly to see if it is just my eye thinking that our passes from behind center are more effective, or if it is truth?

     

    The notes at the top are shorthand for info about the play. I included all pass plays called regardless of penalty, scramble, sack, etc. I tried to go in this order...

     

    play #, result of play, time-quarter, score, down& distance, yard line.

     

    I should have made that more clear.

     

    Thats funny, I tried to find a similar chart about the Bills drives during the Steelers game and this is what was there....

    Nice job. Did you do this using the all-22?

     

    I did... tried to get a start w/ the regular broadcast, but just isn't possible

     

    In that case we should just play backyard football and in the huddle, EJ should say, ok guys just get open. ..

     

    haha, a lot of teams run all-curls well (saints are excellent at it)... we are just not one of them

     

    Nice work Jon. I had a tough time deciphering your notes re. the distance of the passes attempted. Can you tell me how many passes were attempted over 15 yards and how many were in the 1-15 yd range? Thanks bro and this is really great work.

     

    Sorry I did not record the "air yards" on any of the passes, but I can tell you that the vast majority were under 15 yards (prob 85% if I guessed off the top of my head). If I do it again, I'll try and record that info. Nickelcitybills.com does a chart like that I believe.

    Play 13 gotta go... it has everybody stopping and turning at the same yard and distance. I know it's not accurate but if it is, then Hackett gotta go for even drawing up a simple play like that.

     

    That play is one of the Bills favorites to run... they run it at least once or twice a game!

    UPDATE: I diagramed every pass against the Jets as well... see below

    So I really like the strategy aspect of football... and after watching Thad and Tuel throw the ball downfield w/ some effectiveness, I wanted to see why EJ wasn't doing the same.

     

    Therefore I diagrammed every pass play the Bills called against the Steelers.

    Things that I noticed were that there definitely were downfield throws that could have been made. EJ is not the best QB at throwing hooks/curls and still seems to need to see the guy open before he throws it. However, I think that he has the raw talent to be a good QB in the NFL.

     

    Anyways, I thought it would be interesting to discuss...

    Without knowing the exact play call, we will never know what was supposed to happen... all I know is that the Bills do a ton of pattern matching w/ their cover guys, and someone has to be responsible for the 2nd vertical route. I think that Gilmore has to know he has inside help there.

     

    I originally thought this was the old run and shoot switch route, and it is similar to it except for Stills runs an out an up instead of a wheel type route.

     

    But make no mistake this was a called shot play from the Saints to get a deep shot.

    I wish this was a more upbeat post... but I looked at the 1st 2 big plays for the Jets, both of them Stephen Hill beating Justin Rogers deep. It really was deja vu all over again.

    Stupid question: What is cover 0?

    Nice work. I was gonna write up blitz #1 myself, just because: somebody needed to acknowledge the awesome there.

     

    That was such a cool design.

     

    Here's my thing tho....if Pettine can design this, why can't he design an anti-Pats 2TE/1WR bunch formation play? That bunch play kept them from 3 and out multiple times.

     

    I believe the thing to do there is have the DE/OLB on the side of the bunch blast the WR right off the snap. It's not like the WR will avoid him, because his job is stay where he is, or cut horizontally. This would blow up the play, as the 2 TEs are there to block, not catch. Also, do what this "not-blitz" did: since you have an extra CB due to the DE covering(no, blasting) the bunch WR, send him to blitz from the other side. He would be free, and the only thing we'd have to worry about? Tom Brady's scramble ability. :lol: But really? The free CB could easily run him down.

     

    EDIT:

    Even if this doesn't work(the TEs get loose), wouldn't the psychological effect of hitting their WR with DE intimidate them from running routs over the middle at full speed? Besides, wouldn't you probably break Amendola if you did this more than once? :lol:

     

    Thanks for the comments... Pettine really is creative and shows how much coaching matters. I think the Pats run a ton of option routes and read coverages on the fly a lot which makes it tough for the defense. I actually think they will go w/ more man coverage the next time they play them.

    find some cover three for me, please. I'd like to put together what I think will benefit byrd greatly when he returns. The cover three shown is great. Byrd lacks the speed to reach the hashes and with mckelvin playing well and gilmore remaining at least the same I think this frees byrd to roam between the hashes.

     

    If we force plays outside we put the ball in the air longer, we eliminate the ability to make the catch in bounds and YAC, and most importantly we take away the effective range of many QB's - and vision to look all the way across the field.

     

    Look on Sunday for the Jets to run tight sets where Smith will be able to see the field quickly. His timing will be key and we will have to play our DB's on the LOS to delay these routes.

     

    Geno Smith will run for over 40 yards this week.

     

    Bills have been running a ton more Cover 3 this year than in previous years. They are much more of a middle of the field safety type team now (cov3 rushing 4/5, cov1) w/ some quarters thrown in occasionally. Last week they played Cover 2-man basically only on the drive at the end of the 1st half and got smoked on it. Also rushed 3 w/ a DL spying a decent amount as well.

     

    Is there any specific play you want to see? Or just some more cov 3 examples?

    my favorite was the blitz on the hail mary attempt, never understood why teams dont do this and would just sit back rushing 3 and let the QB wait before launching the pass

     

    i am a big fan of the cross ILB blitz in Madden...just saying

     

    I agree... I've never seen that on a hail mary before, why give the QB the time to throw it that deep. Makes a lot of sense to me.

    I don't get the comparison either. Nassib, from what I have seen is nothing like Andy Dalton. Completely different styles of play.

     

    Couldn't be bigger opposites... Dalton is one of the last guys I would compare Nassib to. Nassib is a down the field thrower that excels at the intermediate routes. Needs to display better touch on shorter stuff (got much better at this as the season went on) Has arm for deep ball, but would often times underthrow it due to bad timing, not arm strength. Guy belongs in a down the field vertical offense.

     

    Interestingly, Drafttek has Nassib rated (currently) the 11th best QB in this year's draft class.

    Think the homerism here is strong, anyone?

     

    Drafttek also has Colin Klein at 9... guy is a worse version of Tebow

    BTW....how did you find SU games on youtube??..I typed in a bunch of stuff and couldn't find anything...just highlights and interviews...

     

    Do a youtube search for "Nassib" and you will get results for Nassib cut-ups for I think 5 different SU games this year

     

    Those include the 4 that I watched.

    Whether we get him or not, I don't care where. If our coach passes or takes him, he would know better than anyone else what he's capable of and I'll have faith in that decision.

     

    If we take him at 8 and he pans out, no one will remember or care where we took him. If he's a bust, then what else is new?

     

    Agreed... if the guy is a stud, then it doesn't matter where you take him as long as he is yours. But the draft is a gamble and you want to maximize your utility.

     

    That's my concern as well. Fitz has many of the makings of a good QB but his accuracy is just awful -- even when not under pressure. Haven't seen enough of Nassib to know.

     

    He's not a west-coast QB... he is a down the field thrower and good at it. He can put it into small windows, but don't expect Aaron Rodgers type accuracy. Would you be happy if he turned out to be Phil Rivers?

    Good write-up. What are your thoughts on his decision-making and ability to read defenses?

     

    I thought for the most part he read defenses pretty well, there was only 1 throw I saw him just totally throw it to a defender on a misread (INT vs Rutgers). His biggest problem in my eyes is his calmness in the pocket, especially against USC he was just so twitchy in the pocket and he wasn't throwing his best ball. Against Louisville he was calm in the pocket and made all the correct throws and reads.

     

    How about accuracy? Did he hit guys in stride?

     

    SU offense was a lot of hooks at stops, not many crosses. But when he would throw those seam passes, deep ins and skinny posts, they were things of beauty. He would hit those seam passes like they were nothing, really impressive. So I do think he is accurate, but not pin-point if you know what I mean... But his accuracy on the intermediate routes was great.

     

    In my opinion, this has trade up into the end of the 1st round written all over it for the Bills, unless Marrone & co don't want him
