  1. James Walker is a Bleacher Report blogger in disguise. Sorry.

What I don't get is the Buffalo Rumblings hate. Those guys don't pretend to be pros nor do they claim to be breaking any news. They do offer some pretty decent analysis and uncommon perspective. I go there frequently.

You are correct, using Buffalo Rumblings was a lazy reference there. My apologies to Brian G.

I guess what I should have said is that Walker's "blog" is probably on par with Buffalo Rumblings - which is horrible when you consider those guys are fans working on their own time versus a guy that gets paid with a built in audience like ESPN to fall back on. And BR, while not in the game of scoops/breaking news, actually provides analysis of what fans are actually discussing at a given time. Walker provides three paragraphs of regurgiated three day old crap.

Why is ESPN putting up with this crap? Has anyone ever seen Walker on tv? I seem to remember Tim on all the time.

  2.

The AFC East reporter should be considered an authority. He's more of a parrot, a parrot that parrots analysis that any serious fan would already know.

You hit the nail on the head right there. I think I'd honestly trust something posted by Pat Moran or Brian Galliford before him.

  3. It's not hatred per se, more disappointment. With such a built in audience as ESPN, he seems to be just wasting space. The other divisional blogs are all half decent and each bring something to the table in their own way. I just find it hard to believe he hasn't been replaced.

I also find it interesting that no one's really complained about him before on TBD. He must be just that far off the radar for the average bills fan.

  4. Does anyone actually read this clown? I think its a fair question.

Say what you want about Tim Graham, but when he was on the AFC East blog, I actually went to it. He had...you know, NEWS. I'd say at the time that the AFC East blog was my go-to source on Bills news. Now, I haven't even visited in probably a month in a half until today, when I saw the enlightening discussions about "Should the Patriots trade their first round pick?" and and "Jets Shopping Tebow?" Does every article have to be a question? And has this dolt even broken a story or had a scoop once since he took over? I doubt he's ever even stepped foot in Buffalo. I think Buffalo Rumblings writes more interesting outsourced and/or linked stories than him.

  5. As I've said repeatedly, I love the idea of advanced stats/analytics but you have to be careful about buying into them.

Until last year, the All-22 video was not available to the public and thus the "scouting" was done off of videotaped network-televised games.

Also, I've seen no proof that the people "breaking down" the video have scouting backgrounds.

Agreed - I wonder how much of those ratings are predicated on # of snaps and # of tackles

While not a certainty, it does stretch the imagination that two top 10 players would be on one of the worst defenses.

I remember Matter2003 had a great post with the best and worst player rankings from PFF back in January and said the Bills players had the 9th highest combined defensive grade. Interesting to say the least.

  6. I wanted them both back understand the moves. Sucks we cut George, but wasn't surprised with Nick after what we saw of him last year. And then I saw PFF's Evan Silva with Nick Barnett. Anyone have insight as to what these guys saw in him we didn't? Are their rankings that predicated on tackles above all else?

    Evan Silva@evansilva

As mentioned previously, @PFF had Nick Barnett as top-10 4-3 OLB in 2012. @PFF also had George Wilson as a top-8 safety. Both cut by #Bills.

  7. didnt know that about Vince.

I never said that Welker had any ties or was a fan of Buffalo either.

Yes I believe the designer of that shirt was thinking about Buffalo Bills when they designed it. It's got a standing buffalo and its our team colors. Everyone in the US that watches football would agree with that most likely. It would be like seeing a Pittsburgh t shirt that was black and yellow. Or a Cleveland t shirt that was Brown and Orange. Or maybe Oakland with Silver and Black. It's no coincidence. What is odd is why he's wearing it. As Buffalo is not a big destination city nor is it a popular choice for the cities name on any apparel.

It clearly wasnt a t shirt about Buffaloes. Or it wouldn't have been in those colors. And that's why it's odd that he's wearing it.

Nothing to see here folks. Quick google search pulls this up - Sportique Apparel Company - the shirt says the fictional Tempe Arizona Buffaloes. The Buffalo looks to be Sportique's logo. While you and I would probably think twice about wearing a shirt of that could remotely be construed as looking like a division rival, I think a lot of these guys aren't bright enough to think that way.

Although the Bills may have a copyright infringement case on their hands, if they knew...

  8. I went and checked out the Gang Green site - they're opinions are ranging from good riddance to anger as to why someone would pick the bills over the jets. They also have an interesting take (apparently from Mike Francesca) that Pettine was the "rat" that leaked a bunch of negative stories to Manish Mehta at ESPN New York Daily News.

Either way, Manish is also saying that the Jets DB coach is coming with Pettine...also that a bunch of Jets players (Pace, Smith, DeVito) may follow

Don't be surprised if DL Mike DeVito, OLB Calvin Pace and S Eric Smith are Buffalo Bills next season. #nyj

  9. Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone texted an introductory note to his new players today.

A few of them passed it along to the Press Coverage blog to share with readers.

My first day on the job at One Bills Drive was certainly exciting and proved to be a very busy one as well. I apologize for not getting this out to you sooner. In the early part of this week I will be fully engaged in putting together our coaching staff, but I want to let you know that I am planning to be in the office later this week. So please stop by and say hello if you have the opportunity. If not, I look forward to hearing from you down the road when we have the staff in place.

I'm looking forward to gaining your trust and working hard to achieve our goals.

    Coach Marrone

What? We have a coach that's ALREADY APOLOGIZIN' .... after one sentence?! Oh boy, are we in for it!

    [sarcasm off]

  10. Wow!!!

    You guys are rough!

I listened to the interview and when he said "hopefully… we'll see what happens" it jumped out at me too. The wording is awkward to say the least.

My other observation is that it sounded like Whaley was not very comfortable during the interview and wanted to get out of it ASAP.

Those things said, I don't think there's much consequence to his stumbling comment either way.

But regardless, take it easy on the new guy!

I agree with you SJBF that there probably isn't much consequence to this. It's probably looking for something where there's nothing, which I believe we're all guilty of doing from time to time.

I can't speak on the OP's idea that the original story was removed, but I do think its interesting that Chris Brown posted a story an hour ago with a quote attributed to Whaley with "Personally I know him and we'll see what happens. I know he's got a lot of opportunities." The word hopefully has been removed completely, which Whaley clearly said in the interview. I'll probably just chalk this up to a reporter (albeit a paid shill) cleaning up a quote of his coworker.

Do most reporters clean up quotes this way? I was under the impression that they usually write what they hear, enter in words using [brackets] for emphasis, and add sic when they need to show the spelling or grammar error is on the individual, not the reporter.

  11. Is it 271 or 130? Barry is quoting a blog post from "Politics on the Hudson" with his 271 number while Harrington said yesterday "130 for renovations." In the "Politics on the Hudson" they even mention only 95 million from the State and county going to renovations, so where does the rest of the money go? I've read the MOU, and they only use the 130 number.

  12. I may not, and often don't, have any idea what I'm talking about. However, I always thought that pools like these were in the clear as long as there was no house taking a percentage of the fees. I wonder if the portion being donated to charity is what red flagged this?

That, right there, is the kicker. It sounds like they were taking their cut, which is illegal. As long as the house isn't profiting, it isn't illegal. The government can't do anything about your Super Bowl number pools, as long as the house isn't taking it's share.

  13. Confirmed by the news, with details

35 mil from the team, very good

    10 year term, ridiculous

out after 7 years with no financial penalty, uber ridiculous

Way to negotiate, Cuomo and Polancarz! And Ralph is an ass for making this short of an agreement with those demands.

Seven years is probably important to the snake Cuomo, because he hopes by then to be in the White House...

  14. And your point has been addressed three times now, in posts #3, #22, and #23.

If you care to discuss it, then discuss it.

Yes it has been, thank you. Personal preference here, I would just still prefer Brooks to play the position he played in college. While slot may be a different beast, I still believe that the best receivers in the league play outside. Plenty of rookies have come in and played slot. I would rather put a rookie with limited game and practice experience into a position he may feel more comfortable in early.. That being said, I hope he plays well, and takes that outside over the outside job next year. If he's good enough, he's good enough to play anywhere. Hopefully the coaching decision proves correct.

  15. First off, Brooks was playing only his second game and was coming off injury. He hasn't had practice time nor game time. Give the kid a break. He literally is at the very minimum the 2nd most talented DB on this roster. He is fast (ran a 4.26 forty), he is physical, and he has great cover skills. If he played for anyone other than LSU he would have been a high first round pick. When he did get chances to start at LSU he dominated the games and even won player of the game awards.

Actually, the season is completely over...the one place he NEEDS to be playing is on the outside. Let him get the work and time in now that he has missed all year as much as we can. Come next year, Gilmore and Brooks will be our starting DB's and if we had a DC that actually understood how to create pressure up front, our DB's would be looking much different. Our DB's are not our issue, they are young and will learn as they play. Our 2 biggest issues are LB's and our DC not doing enough to create havoc up front. He constantly brings only 4...let me tell you that doesn't even work in Madden let alone the NFL...seriously. You give NFL QB's time to throw, even the worst of them can find open guys.

Mark my words, Brooks is going to be a player for a long time for this team...that is until he is a FA and Buffalo decides not resign him because they dont want to pay market value.

You bring up some good points. I didn't realize that he was drafted to be an outside CB, I was under the impression that we were drafting him to play where he played in college, inside. Apparently this fact wasn't backed up anywhere other than in my own head. But yes, the kid is in his second game and very little practice - isn't that all the more reason to play him at a position where he is most comfortable, inside? At least until he gets a little more game experience? That's all I'm saying. I would have been happier to see Leodis outside, Brooks inside, and Rogers on the bench where he belongs. But hey, if they're playing him outside, let's hope the experience gives him the confidence to win one of the starting CB spots next year.

The OP's point appears to be an indictment of the coaching staff rather than any slight of Brooks' ability or effort. I liked the pick too and when the LSU HC was on during the broadcast when the Bills made the pick he also stated the Bills got a great player. I believe that given an entire offseason that Brooks, and Gilmore, will raise their level of play significantly above what we've witnessed this season. Given a year under their belt the DB group should become a strength of the defense.

The coaching staff on the other hand appears to have no learning curve or chance of improvement. While I don't welcome another new coaching regime next season unless its a clear 'improvement' and move forward I am completely depressed at the hopeless prospect of dealing with another season of Gailey/Wanstadt next year. The only person left on Earth that can't see these guys are clueless is the one person needed to make the decision.

    +1

  16. Compared to mckelvin, Williams, and Rogers, brooks has played great....he is not the liability that the others are, and will be solid for us for a while...with all the real issues on this team, I really don't understand the point of this thread.

The point of this thread is why are we playing a player on the outside if all his experience is on the inside? I'm not bashing Brooks here, I'm bashing the coaching decision. I liked the pick. Play your players where their strengths are.

  17. When we drafted Ron Brooks this year, I thought it was a pretty interesting pickup for a guy that never played more than nickel in college (as he should, the talent ahead of him was phenomenal). With the way spread offenses have been moving the past decade or so, especially how some of the best receivers in the NFL are now playing slot, I wondered if the Bills we're ushering in a new tactic here. It seems that the past few years that the slot CB position has evolved into an entirely different position than outside CBs, with an entirely different skill set. I wondered if the NFL would ever catch on, and start drafting CBs specifically for that position. And here come the Bills, drafting a slot CB for what seems like, gasp, a slot CB role in the NFL. Hey, are the Bills involved in something revolutionary here?!

But for the millionth time, it sounds like I gave the Bills credit way too early and probably read wayyyyy to far into the decision. Brooks has been playing exclusively on the outside since he's come back from IR, and not surprisingly, he's been burned. BAD. Take a look at the Bradford to Gibson touchdown - anyone want to guess where he's lined up? Outside of course. Why are we playing this kid who exclusively played inside in college on the outside in the NFL? Its not like Justin Rogers has been shutting down WRs this year. Leave it to the Bills to play to our players weaknesses rather than strengths.

  18. When we signed him, I immediately thought of the Julius Peppers situation in Chicago back in 2010, a player hailed as a freak but someone that has definitely been accused of taking plays off. I have thought of that quite a few times during the season, but never got around to posting it. Take a look at Peppers' sack total for the first 9 games back in 2010:

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/gamelog/_/id/3530/year/2010/julius-peppers

-Two sacks in his first nine games, including a six game drought between weeks five and nine.

-Then six sacks in four games with a three sack performance thrown in there (sound familiar yet?)

-Finished the season with no sacks in the last three games, and then two more goose eggs in the Bears two playoff games

-Total of eight on the season, with a six in that four game stretch

The funny thing is no one blamed Julius in Chicago or nationally - it works that way when when you actually, you know, win football games. They trotted out all the excuses - still good in run support, makes players better, etc. I tried finding one story on google about a columnist bashing this singing as a bust, bloated contract, but nothing. Most stories looked like this: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/19397/the-true-impact-of-julius-peppers

With the weird way football works, I almost expect Mario to disappear the rest of the season. I wonder though, if he does go dormant to end the season, will all the bashing continue this offseason, or has he done enough to win our support? Interesting to see how this one plays out.

  19. Bear with me here - I think that the sooner they build the LA Stadium, the better. We all know Ralph isn't going to do anything with the Bills until he croaks. If the stadium is built and a team (or two) moves to LA within say the next five years (and Ralph holds on), we're golden. IMO, the Raiders, Chargers and Rams all have more tenuous situations with their stadiums and owners (and fan bases for that matter) than the Bills. Ralph just needs to hang in there (fingers crossed). The one hangup I could see would be if one team moves to LA and the NFL keeps the option open to put another team there. Anyone agree?

  20. I really don't much care about the cowboys in general but this kind of stuff about families just leaching on & trying to take advantage of others shows just what this guy had to go through to get out of his upbringing .

The same has happened to a lot of stars not just sports stars , but good for him that he is having it handled , but you can bet he doesn't get invited to Thanksgiving !!!

You can only hope this is the end of it and the kid won't have any other problems. But the other questionable thing I see here is his attorney is Royce West - isn't this the same "State Senator" buffoon that was also involved with Dez Bryant? He seems to care about the limelight as much as his clients. Only time will tell, but Tyron may have another snake to deal with here too...

  21. http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2012/10/ksk-interview-george-wilson.html

Kissing Suzy Kolber did an interview with George Wilson a few days ago. I submitted the article to the mods but I thought I'd share here also.

He talks about how players prepare for Thursday games, his take on Goodell and discipline, handling the pats* offense, counseling younger guys (Gilmore) and criticism faced by the defense (Mario).

Nothing too insightful, but overall a pretty good interview with George - he's a pro's pro.
