The word that comes to mind in describing him is "saturnine." I know this sounds silly, but Kerry should get a dog or cat, and be photographed with it. Americans love their pets-- uh, er, "companion animals." Clinton had (the late) Buddy and Socks the cat (who I think is still around), George Bush had Millie the Springer Spaniel, and I've seen Dubya with a Scottish terrier and some other dogs (followed by a Secret Service guy with a pooper scooper).
