Syracuse pursuing Broncos assistant

Newly hired Syracuse University football coach Greg Robinson seems intent on giving the Orange's offense a Denver flavor.

Only days after Broncos quarterbacks coach Pat McPherson turned away Robinson's offer to be Syracuse's offensive coordinator - McPherson said Saturday he did not want to move his family to New York and that he felt the Broncos had "a pretty good thing going" - Robinson now is pursuing Denver tight ends coach Brian Pariani for the job.

Robinson, who served as the Broncos' defensive coordinator for six seasons, this week has contacted Denver coach Mike Shanahan and Pariani, who now has the inside track at his first coordinator's job.

Efforts to reach Pariani and Shanahan were unsuccessful Tuesday.

Pariani has been on an NFL staff with Shanahan since 1992, when both were with the San Francisco 49ers.

The 39-year-old then moved to the Broncos staff in 1995 when Shanahan was appointed Denver's coach.

Pariani has coached the team's tight ends in all 10 of his seasons with Denver.

A tight ends coach usually works closely with the team's offensive line, so he has a comfort level with pass-protection schemes and the offense's approach in the running game.

Robinson has told Syracuse officials he would upgrade the team's offensive scheme, which has included the Orange's version of the run-oriented option offense, to a more pro-style attack.

Robinson already has filled four spots on what will be a 10-person coaching staff.

Included in the four coaches he has either hired or retained are former University of Texas quarterback Major Applewhite, who will coach the quarterbacks, and former Broncos linebacker Steve Russ, who will coach the linebackers.

Russ played in Denver when Robinson was the Broncos' defensive coordinator.
