  1. I hear both sides of the Doug Whaley argument, but we're talking about the opportunity for him to be GM next season, on a franchise that is well positioned for a new GM to take over and make his mark. This is the real world, if he has the choice between waiting until Nix retires or becoming a GM immediately (and taking the salary that comes with it), why would he hold off?

It also leads me to ask----Why the hell did the Bills not just appoint him GM outright? Why give the reigns to Nix? Its not like Nix had prior GM experience either. But whatever. I need to stop trying to understand why the Bills do certain things.

  2. He won't be on the Jets next year.

    PTR

Is that because he isn't under contract with the Jets next year and some other team will pay him more money? Bc Maybin demonstrated that he belongs in the NFL, as much as I hate to say it. Will his success continue? I don't know.

By the way, his stats weren't as impressive down the stretch, but I watched him play and he didn't fair too badly.

  3. I imagine this has been said a million times, but RG3 will and should be the pick if the Bills are on clock and he is still on the board.

Honestly, I think that if he declares, he will be discussed (at least in the media) as a possible #1 overall pick, even with Luck on the board. The story line will be "Luck or RG3"?! I guarantee it. And its a fair question. RG3's athletic attributes are off the charts. He is a much more athletic version of Cam Newton. Arguably with a better arm. Oh, and he's a character guy. A great pick for whoever can draft him.

  4. Sanchez wasn't good at all! ....it was soo much blown coverage

A few were blown coverage, but overall, Williams did well. The problem is 0 pass rush. You give the offense that much time to throw and this is bound to happen. Especially with Plaxico and Holmes as your WRs.

By the way, I've said it since week 1. Talent deficit shows through. Burress makes a one handed grab to save the game, Stevie lets the ball go through his hands.

  5. With the benefit of a good night's sleep, several things have somewhat dawned on me. So these thoughts are going to be VERY random...

As much as we may dislike Rex and the Jets, the simple truth of the matter is that they are a heck of a football team. Aside from their QB, who may be the luckiest guy on the planet to have found himself in such a fortunate situation, their team is pretty well stacked. Just one more example of how much better their drafts have been than ours over the years with quality first rounders like D'Brick, Mangold, and Revis who were all drafted during the Levy/Jauron era, while we have virtually nothing to show from those wilderness years. Sanchez/Holmes/Burress/Keller/Tomlinson were all first rounders. Our corresponding players were all either late-round draft picks or undrafted free agents.

Much like Bill Polian did back in the late 80s, when he was looking to build a team designed to stop Marino's high flying Dolphins, the Jets were built to stop Brady's spread passing game in New England. It is no wonder, then, that the Jets have advanced beyond the Pats in the playoffs the last couple of years. And guess what? That Jets team is also capable of stopping the Bills' similar short/quick passing game. For as tough as the Bills' OL has been all season long, the real reason that they have given up so few sacks is because Fitz gets the ball out of his hand so quickly on short passing routes. The Jets did a great job playing physical at the line of scrimmage with their front 7 and trusted their corners in man-on-man situations. Some may be worried that other teams will use this blueprint against the Bills. I am not worried; there are not many teams in the NFL that CAN do what the Jets defense did yesterday. To stop the Bills' attack, it is necessary for the defense to control the line of scrimmage, cover all 4-5 receivers AND make sound tackles. The Jets did all of those things yesterday.

Like many of you, I came away from the game thoroughly disenchanted with Chan's coaching yesterday. However, I really do NOT believe it was a case of his being out-coached by Rex. When you have superior talent, as Rex does, you are usually going to win, as long as you minimize mistakes. The Jets came ready to play. Some of that was probably due to confidence, as they truly felt that they matched up against the Bills very well (which obviously they do). But, their execution was also fantastic. Given their superior talent, when they execute in the manner in which they did yesterday, I doubt that any coach in the league could devise a scheme given the existing Buffalo Bill players that would have resulted in victory, given how well the Jets played. If the Jets had a legitimate QB, the game would have been over by halftime. I actually came away even MORE impressed with Chan and the job that he has done this year with the what he has to work with. What yesterday did for me was expose the talent gap between the Bills and the more elite teams in the NFL. And, yes, despite their underachieving early in the season, the Jets are an elite team. When they execute as well as they did yesterday (especially on defense), they can beat anybody.

The Bills simply are not good enough (especially in the trenches) to man up and beat a team like the Jets mano y mano. They have to limit their own mistakes, hope that the opponent makes some big mistakes of their own, and creatively come up with a big play here and there. It seemed like Chan's failing yesterday was perhaps overestimating the talent of his own team -- and NOT coming up with creative ways to manufacture points. Where were the wrinkles? Trick plays? Maybe Rex goaded Chan into playing the macho man game. The problem is that when a bantam weight goes toe-to-toe with a heavyweight and tries to win by exchanging punches, the odds are just not very good for a victory.

Now, before you get the idea that I am saying that the Bills are DOOMED due to this talent gap, I think it is quite the contrary. The Bills have already shown that they are capable of beating good teams -- and that as a well coached team, they tend to minimize mistakes, while feeding off the opponent's mistakes. Chan needs to forget about this game and focus on devising a game plan to beat the Cowboys this week. Rex is sure to provide his brother Rob with some intel in terms of a defensive gameplan, but the Cowboys' defense is NOT the Jets'. Their pass defense is suspect, and Marshawn Lynch just ran for 135 yards against them yesterday.

This is a very good post. I've been talking about the talent deficit all year, not in a negative light, but in a positive light that truly demonstrates how far this team has come and how far it can go when our talent levels match up to our competition's.

  6. 1) Could there be a Bills fan who isn't thrilled by David Nelson? The kid continues to get seperation from defenders and make plays. I will go out on a limb and say that I would rather have him on my football team than Lee Evans at this point. Blast away but one of them consistently gets open, and it ain't Evans.

    2) Btw, on Freddie J's 80 yarder to the house, Spiller ran downfield with him and blocked. I appreciate effort like this.

    3) I am all about Gailey as a coach, but he REALLY screwed up by not running the football late in the 2nd qtr. What was it? 2nd and 5? We attempted 2 passes and were knocked out of field goal range. This while up by 4, and getting the football to start the second half. That was an out and out horror show.

    4) Daddy made whiskey and he made it well. Cost 2 dollars and burned like hell. I cut hickory just to fire the still. Drink a bottle and get ready to kill.

    5) I am all about Gailey as a coach, and his decision to go for the field goal at the end of the half really did work. I thought it was a dumb decision, and even expected to miss the kick.

    6) Did you people see the block by Urbik on the 80 yd. TD run by Freddie? He moved the entire defense to the left, and btw Pears (who I will get back to) finished off the play. This is essentially a large portion of what I have always wanted the Bills to do.

    7) On the 3rd qtr. td by Manningham, Carrington was in coverage. This made me cringe and think about the horror days of Dick Jauron. The guy must weight 290. He blocked a field goal. It is NEVER OK for a human like this to be in coverage. Period.

    8) For the third time.....I am all about Gailey as a coach. But can someone tell me why we were throwing with 4:14 left in the game? We were in position to run, score and win. The truth is that Gailey, (as much as I indicated 3 times that I like him), lost us this football game. You want to blame Fitz? Go ahead, but in my opinion he was doing what he was told to do. And yes, the pick Fitz threw in the 3rd quarter was a flat out awful play. There was ZERO chance of completion, and I mean none at all. I expect more from him. But I don't blame him for this loss.

    9) Drayton Florence was awful today with the penalties. It was clearly his worst game as a Buffalo Bill. We can't afford this. If it keeps up they will draft another first round corner. OMG!

    10) Number 4? Well, I was thinking of posting Grateful Dead lyrics in my weekly post. Actually, I thought that the Dead were just that, but John Kadlecik brought them back with "Further." And I will be at MSG to see them in November.

    11) Pears, and for that matter Hairston showed us just how important it is to devote major resources to the OT position. Pears had his worst game as a Bill. It wasn't cold, but the winds were strong. There will never be a time where running the football and blocking will not play a major role in the Buffalo Bills football team, and I mean f^&%#%g never.

    12) Sorry, but Batten didn't measure up to our hopes in terms of providing any pass rush. I hope that he picks up his game. Dareus? He is a monster.

    13) 4-2 isn't so bad. We have 2 weeks to heal our wounds, and for Gailey to regroup. A win in 2 weeks would put us right back on track. People, enjoy your "off week" lol!

    14) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good post Bill, but I disagree a bit on the Gailey thing. I think Gailey's job is to put his QB in a position to succeed, and while I agree that calling those passing plays w/ 4 min left in the 4th quarter was stupid, he did call a play that allowed Stevie to beat his man down the field. Fitz just didn't make the throw. I mean, I don't think its been pounded home enough...that was a REALLY bad throw. Stevie beat him and throw was not only behind him (way behind him), but it was also to his inside. In the NFL, you need to make those throws consistently. It was a touch throw, and while it isn't easy, its fairly routine at this level. I think that is what bummed me out so much. We all want badly for Fitz to succeed bc he's such a great guy. But, games like this make me wonder.

I agree with everything else. I would only add that the Bills need to utilize Spiller way more.

  7. Defense is bad, but Fitz looks horrible today. This is what happens when you have 0 WRs that can stretch the field and a QB with a weak arm. NO ONE honors the deep threat anymore. This is the Bills I think. When they can't get turn overs, this is what you will see.

  8. While that is a TD, that's one of those silly plays in the NFL. One of those grey area plays where its like "really? That's a touchdown and yet Stevie Johnson's catch against the Bengals is incomplete?"

  9. Gonna be a big day if the defense can't get pressure on Eli. They are coming close to getting him, but the coverage just isn't there.

I really don't like Andra Davis in there, they are going to pick on him all day.

Also, if the offense can't make passes down the field, its going to be a long day. This is where the talent deficit sticks out. Stevie needed to run a deeper route on that 3rd and 4 or whatever it was.

Bills definitely can win this game judging by whats happened so far, but they are going to have trouble if they can't keep up in a shoot out, bc lets face it, our defense isn't that good.

  10. Corner is getting picked apart in the nickel. I thought McGee was healthy? If not, it was waste to have him on the gameday roster and have Wheatley inactive.

Chan's play calling with the lead, yes, has been terrible. He doesn't adjust. Spiller is the fastest guy on the Bills offense now. Yea, Freddy should get the carries. Spiller needs to the ball. Why that call went to Stevie Johnson is insane to me.
