  1. Here is Modrak's inglorious legacy with high draft picks:

    2002 Mike Williams Texas Tackle

2003 Willis McGahee Miami (FL) Running Back

2004 Lee Evans Wisconsin Wide Receiver

    2004 J.P. Losman Tulane Quarterback

2005 No 1st Round Pick, Roscoe Parrish (2nd Round) Miami (FL) Wide Receiver

2006 Donte Whitner Ohio State Safety

2006 John McCargo North Carolina State Defensive Tackle

2007 Marshawn Lynch California Running Back

2008 Leodis McKelvin Troy Defensive Back

2009 Aaron Maybin Penn State Defensive End/Outside Linebacker

    2009 Eric Wood Louisville Center

2010 C.J. Spiller Clemson Running Back

How this guy remained employed for a decade is beyond me. Great move to fire him IMHO... I'm strangely starting to like Buddy Nix more and more...

  2. A few more numbers you could look at that you didn't have up here, but the biggest one missing that I really like is Dontay Moch from Nevada. The guy was absolutely rediculous combine wise. IIRC he was almost 6'4", 250lbs, He had a 4.44 40yd, over a 10' broad and a 42" vertical. I don't remember his shuttle or 3 cone but he made my mind up. I want him if we can get him anywhere after the first round is over. I think he could easily play 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE, or possibly pick up 20-30lbs over the next few years and play 3-4 DE.

Another player to look out for was Acho. Another good day in Indy IMO

if you happen to get intrigued by my insight I'd be happy to see how they ranked with these guys you posted. I'd do it myself but it's not easy to look up or post all that on my iPhone.

I watched Moch play on two occasions at Nevada this year and he is the real deal. Combine numbers are one thing, but this guy absolutely dominated on defense. Did anyone see the classic Boise State - Nevada game this year? Moch was unblockable.

  3. Toward the beginning of your post I thought, "Ok...this dude needs to toot his horn", but when done reading it I did a 180. I am amazed at the length you & your buddy went to in order to prove your point & reveal the strength of Paea. Some team will snag him early on. Thanks for sharing your experiment.

There is a school of thought in weight training that says that what matters is total weight moved over the course of a set. So, for example, 15 reps at 100 lbs. (1500 total lbs.) is better than 6 reps at 200 lbs. (1200 lbs.). By that measure, Paea lifted over 11,000 lbs. in less than a minute. That is absolutely freakish.

And, while it is true that the other guys who held the record all never made a splash in the league, Paea is two-time Pac-10 defensive lineman of the year. He is quick as hell to go along with the freakish strength.

  4. Hey I'm a college professor too, and I agree. In football terms, it's also smart. He was only finishing his sophomore year for goodness sake.

Not true. He took a redshirt year so academically he is finishing his junior year. And to reiterate what many have pointed out, in economic terms this is a bad, bad move. He can finish his education at any time but has a finite, diminishing window of opportunity to play in the NFL.

  5. I am not sure that we should assume that he will go #1 next year. He may not have as great a season, or get injured, or other great players might show up (QB, DE, OL, RB) etc. In other words, we might not need to be first in the draft order to get Luck. Having said that, I'd be surprised if he dropped lower than #5.

I have to say that his decision only heightens my respect for him. I am a college professor, and take education seriously. I am really pleased by the message this sends to young kids in America.

... but an economist might not be pleased with his decision to stay in school. :)

If one assumes, for example, that a good quarterback on average plays until he is 35 (i.e. each player has a fixed amount of time that he will be athletically gifted enough to play in the league) then by not coming out he is shaving one year off of his total career. This, of course, negatively impacts his cumulative earnings (ignoring the myriad of other things that could impact earning potential). There really is no good economic reason for staying in school if you are likely to be the #1 overall pick. A player can finish his education whenever he retires or during the off-season (and, of course, many do).

  6. I don't think Mallet is Jamarcus Russel, i don't think any of these QBs are I was just saying if you are going to compare anybody to him it would be Mallet and that's really only from a physical standpoint. Oh and I fully admit that their is homerism, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a good prospect and the second best one IMO. And Bledsoe wasn't a bad QB but I don't want to draft a QB at #3 who is going to turn out to be mediocre. In fact I don't even want to draft Gabbert or any QB, I want Nick Fairley! I was just saying that after Luck, I think he is the second best option at QB.

IMHO, I think people on this board who aren't familiar with him will see just how dominant Fairley is when Auburn plays Oregon in the national championship game. He's this year's version of Suh - disruptive and unblockable with just a single lineman. That said, I get the feeling that he might not get past Denver at pick #2 (they can't stop the run at all and need a d-lineman).

  7. Mel Kiper Jr. has Nick Fairley (DT Auburn) as his #3 overall prospect. Great player as a 4-3 tackle, but I wonder if he could play end in a 3-4? Seems we could use a linebacker more than anything... Akeem Ayers? Is there a better LB prospect out there?

  8. Not saying I don't believe you heard this news from somebody, but any type of tear occurring in the achilles could put a person out for much longer than 6-8 weeks. If it is a tear in the achilles he's done for almost a year if not more. This coaching staff seemed to make it seem like it wasn't major. I could be wrong though

I gotta agree with this. I actually have a partial tear of my left achilles right now and it's about as frustrating of an injury as you can have. It feels fine most times, you can do the bike, stairs, walk... but as soon as you try to run on it or do any sort of explosive movement (i.e. Merriman practicing for the first time) you realize that it is not right. It is the definition of a nagging injury that just won't heal without significant rest. Shawne is out for the season if it's an achilles.
