  1. its not just about talent but the ever elusive "Football IQ". Bellichick seems to get smart players that can do what he asks them to do in his system. I seriously question the brain power and decision making of more than a few Bills (especially on the D side of the ball) like Graham,Williams, McKelvin, Sheppard who cant seem to get coached up and make the same mistakes over and over again

  2. I was at that game, by some fluke of fate, while I was living in the Bay Area in my 20s, and will never forget it. People around me and those streaming out of the stadium all sensed they had witnessed a (regular season) game for the ages. If I remember correctly it set an NFL record for no punts in a game, but the thing is it wasnt as if the defenses were bad, in fact they were pretty darn good. It was just two HOF QBs guiding offensive machines at the top of their game and everyone wanted to watch including the D. I also had the privilege of watching Jope Montanas last game at home as a 49er the year before against Barry Sanders.

  3. Personally I'm pulling for the Lions to make it to the playoffs this year for two reasons:

    1) I like what they have been doing and I think they have turned it around and seem to be going in the right direction.

    2) I want the Bills to be #1 at something ... even if it is sucking.

Sorry, the Bills even suck at sucking. They scrape out enough meaningless wins every year to miss out on the franchise quarterbacks to build around. Now the Colts are going from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck: that is #1 at sucking.

  4. I keep hearing people make excuses for Buffalo being injured, with rebuttals that injuries are no excuse, RE: 2010 Packers. My question is this: Why does Buffalo always seem to be one of the leaders in the NFL in injuries, guys put on IR. I'm not talking out for a few weeks, I mean out for the season. My observation is, yeah, we have little depth on both sides of the ball, but damn! We seem to have guys go down all the time. Is this a coincidence? Is something wrong with our strength and conditioning coaches? Do we not know how to tackle? Fall right?

I watched Fitz today be off the mark a lot, with (I almost hate to say it) Brad Smith making a few nice plays to bail out what could have been a disastrous first half. Nelson caught a slant today with his ribs clearly exposed and (this time) he held on after a big pop. Spiller missed a cross when the ball was behind him. Fitz' lack of accuracy cannot help, but that doesn't explain injuries at every position.

    Thoughts?

Injuries to top line players exposes little depth which directly results from a combo of poor front office drafting and a cheap owner. As far as why key players tend to get IR'd for the season, its a maddening trend that Im convinced it has to do with a perennial losing organization/culture, Im just not sure how exactly.

  5. I'm a huge fan of Freddie and perhaps not the most objective viewer, but I think he's easily a top 10 back in the league and maybe even top 5. He just has such a unique way of playing. He never seems to make a mistake. I think breakaway speed is a bit overrated for a running back. Those 60+ yard runs are too rare. It's the 1-2 yard runs that he get 5-6 on that matter and he does that often and as good as anyone.

I was trying to figure it out watching him today. Not the speediest guy like a Chris Johnson. Not the biggest or most bruising back like a Steve Jackson. Not the shiftiest like his teammate CJ. A low cener of gravity but not a bowling ball like Jones-Drew. He follows his blocks as well as anybody, and keeps his legs pumping to finish runs with tremendous lower leg strength, even though its not always that noticeable. Very good balance to bounce off defenders and sustain runs in a crowd (unlike CJ). There is nothing particularly outstanding about his game, just a very nice combination of ALL of the above in sufficent quantities.

  6. God knows there has been an overabundance of Aaron Maybin threads but I don't think this question has been addressed head-on in a thread. Here's my objective criteria in answering the question:

    1) How high was the pick? The higher the pick, the bigger the bust.

    2) What kind of production did we get out of the guy?

    3) Did we pass on any quality players of need in picking the guy?

    4) Bonus factors (did we trade up to get him? did we draft him knowing he was severely injured and wouldn't play for two years? of course, nobody's stupid enough to do that!)

By these criteria, you can make a strong case for Maybin being the all-time Bills' bust. He was an awfully high pick (#11); the production we've gotten and almost certainly will get is essentially zero; and we passed up at least four quality players at need positions in selecting him (Orakpo, Cushing, Oher and Matthews).

At least Mike Williams gave us a couple of years as an ok starting right tackle (his problem was that he wasn't Orlando Pace or Anthony Munoz or even Bryant McKinnie). Losman was a horrendous pick but more because of the trade up to get him than anything else.

You really have to go back in Bills' history to find a worse pick. Rueben Gant was a starting tight end for a couple of seasons. I think the only three that rival Maybin are Al Cowlings (#5) '70, Walt Patulski (#1) '72 (special shout out to Fred Swendson 3rd round in '72, #53 overall pick in the draft and got cut in training camp) and Phil Dokes (#12). Dokes was out of the league after two seasons and contributed nothing. My vote - if Maybin is cut next training camp, he will join Phil Dokes as the worst Buffalo Bills draft pick of all time.

I disagree, Al Cowlings was very productive driving OJ's getaway car.

  7. Shaun Hill, Detroit's second string QB threw for 335 yards, something we as bills fan haven't seen our QB do since 2006. I can't understand how so many teams bench warmers are still leagues ahead of anything on our team.

But yes 200+ passing yards would be some exciting Bills football.

A lot of it was prevent D from the Eagles but Ill still go out on a limb with this prediction: Detroit will go to the Super Bowl before we make it to the playoffs. THats how far ahead they are in rebuilding.

  8. This game was one of the ugliest games in recent history, neither team could make anything work consistantly.

Both teams looked confused and unprepared!

These games happen every now and then and its a shame it was the opener.

I have played in these games and watched quite a few over the years, and you are better off flushing the entire weekend.

If you think this weekends game is any indication of the Bills or Dolphins, think again!

How do you think the Dolphin fans feel today? They are not happy either. Just an awful display of NFL football.

FLUSH the toilet and lets move on!!

Bring on the Packers.......we will know more in a couple of weeks. :flirt:

We now have the same record as the Cowboys, Colts, Bengals, Eagles, Vikings and few other playoff teams from last year. I would be more p*** off and alarmed if I was a supposedly contending Bengals or (trendy pick) Niners fan. I saw a lot of offensive ineptitude from the Vikes/Saints, Skins/Cowboys, Steelers/Falcons, Lions/Bears just to name a few clunkers. The defenses seem to be ahead of the offenses at this point in the season. Reason to be concerned? Sure- but its just one game, I agree.

  9. Where's all the MAYBIN supporters? Against 2nd-3rd-4th teamers he got nowhere last night. He looked too small, took bad angles again and if we were playing pig he would have a B-U-S-_ so far. Some people can tolerate his showboating but it gets obnoxious after a while. We have no pass rush unless we send a safety blitz. He was supposed to be that pass rush. Nothing I've seen from him in 2 years can explain why we took him at #11. A move to a new position, that will do it. Well, it hasn't. I don't know why he's on this team. I love Penn State but he's no Shane Conlan. Please cut his little ass!

Could you imagine if we had Orakpo or Mike Oher right now instead of MAYBE? Either of those 2 players would make our team instantly much better. The draft 2 years ago produced some nice players for us, but our #1 pick is another first round B-U-S- _ !

He made a tackle! He made a tackle! Boooya!

  10. I have to believe that our new strength and conditioning philosophy will translate into more aggressiveness, fewer injuries and, hopefully, a team that pounds people for 60 minutes. Yes we were 6 - 10, but we lost 6 games by a total of 20 points. Sure, we had bad bounces, but I think the collective "softness" when compared to other teams caused players to make crucial mistakes at crucial times. That opening night loss to the Pats set the tone for the whole season, IMO.

Look, I am not parading around the "we're going to the playoffs" banner, but I do think we took major steps with our draft, filled some key positions and added the most dynamic offensive player available. We need a new QB.....I know that. We need to add a pro-level LT, I know that too. However, we simply had too many holes to fill for any reasonable person to believe we could fill them all in one draft.

I am willing to enter the season with optimism and believe this team will have a new attitude. Say what you will about Gailey, but he took a horrible Chiefs offense under Thigpen and averaged over 23 PPG once they went to the spread. I have suffered for a decade with all of you, but at least now I have some hope. I could never say that under Dick "I don't know what emotion is" Jauron.

Never mind Gailey's offense, his best decision has been the switch to the 3-4 which Ive been begging for for years and am willing to be patient for it to develop. One more season of watching undersized Tampa 2 get pushed around, not Bills footbal IMO, I was going to puke.

  11. The Bills addresed the deficiencies at the QB position/Offense by selecting Spiller....a guy that will make a QB/Offense look better on day one.

If it's true that Gailey can get the best out of mediocre QB's (Tomszack, Fiedler, Stewart, Thigpen), then maybe the Bills think he can do the same with.....no, not an unproven rookie QB.....but with the QB's he currently has on staff. Remember, with the names above, he did not draft any of them, he inherited them. So, I believe he can do the same with the current Bills QB's, namely Edwards....

    That is my best guess.

So, with their Rd 2 pick, I don't expect them to take or move up to select Clausen or McCoy. Why would they? If the current QB's on the roster are a question mark, then the rookies-to-be are even more of a question mark.

Look for them to take an OT, DT, OLB/DE, or WR.

My prediction: Kindle or Charles Brown

    Comments?

Why? Because they said they would.
