  1. We need an anchor type player on D that other teams have to account for. Takeo is one is assuming he can regain form after injury. We need a lineman who can draw a double team. I like Ngoti, Watson and Claude Wroten of LSU. Also like DE's Kiwanuka and Williams who are both athletic. Bottom line, this team must get better on third down both on offense and defense. Presently, it is amazing the amount of third downs our opponents convert and how many we don't. Second round draft Daryn Colledge OT from Boise.

Free agency we need to target one good o lineman (not a castoff) and a safety to replace Vincent. Clements must be franchised or signed as we cannot replace every position on the team.

  2. They give us what they have. tKelsay is weak against the run and I do not recall many pressures let alone sacks. Denny has not done bad vs the run. We need a defensive lineman who can draw a double team. We don't have one today.

Mike Williams cannot consistantly pass block versus a stunt. Opponents know it and thus he gets exposed whenever he is on the field. I think he is a dominant run blocker when healthy. Bottom lline he is playing at the level of a backup not an 11 million dollar player.

  3. I believe Number 1 picks is where you have the best opportunity for a superstar player. The 2004 AP All Pro team had 9 of 12 starters named to offense that were first picks. The defense had all 13 selections who were first round picks. The second team was 10 offensive/7 defensive players that were first round picks Of 44 position players selected to the first and second teams, 89% were first picks.

So for all the naysayers who point to busts Ryan Leaf and Mike Williams and say trade out of the high slot, I say a competent GM can grab a rare talent in that position. Keep the pick, grab a star.

  4. As team president, Marv likely would call upon some old contacts for guidance such as Bill Polian, AJ Smith, Dick Vermiel, Bill Walsh and Bruce Allen. He would gather their collective intelligence to determine who best to surround himself with from a personnel and coaching standpoint. Maybe a Dwight Adams or a Buddy Nix comes back to run the personnel department or he hires an up and comer off another staff based on a recommendation. Marv always bragged about his ability to put a coaching staff together so I am sure he would love picking a Head Coach. I could see Marv going after a seasoned assistant like himself such as Tom Moore, Jim Johnson, Ted Cotrell or Al Saunders. I bet Marv would try to get Rusty Jones back in the fold as well.

  5. I am not a USC fan or a Texas fan. That said bashing Reggie Bush and USC right now makes no sense.

Bush has proven time and time again how good he is. USC dismantled Oklahoma last year after we heard how overrated they were. I say until someone knocks them off they deserve the respect. Three titles in a row speaks for itself.

  6. Problem with hiring a proven winner approach is that there are very few out there.

I have no problem letting a new GM hire with a proven track record hire a coach to his liking. Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll, Don Shula, Bill Parcells, Vince Lombardi, etc etc were first time head coaches that did pretty good.

What is important is the competent GM who selects that coach not one impressed by the lists one brings to the interview process or the inspired by prospect of "raiding" his old team.

A good GM can identify a John Fox, Jim Mora, Jr., Lovie Smith or a Marvin Lewis. I honestly would rather have a young coach who is good than a retread.

  7. I like Gilles of GA as well reminds me of Larry Allen at least in frame.

I wonder what a new regimes approach to Mike Williams might be. There has to be intrigue that he can be coached up. Films from last year must show some progress. He can run block. Would not surprise me to see some sort of renegotiation attempt by a new GM/coach who can then cut him if he still rides the pine.

  8. I think he gets either tagged or new contract. We cannot assume to replace a good CB when we will already be in need of lineman on both sides of the ball along with a wr and a safety.

I imagine he would have better numbers if we had a pass rush and an offense that could convert a third down to keep the D fresh.
