  1. Guys that get stoned out, were pampered their entire lives, are undisciplined, and have 50 grand or so walking around money are quite unlikely to drive a boat intox, or resist arrest. Am I correct?

    Good thread.

    Let's see:

    - In Benson's other two run-ins with APD, he has been nothing but cooperative.

    - His boat was "randomly" stopped all 6 times he has taken the boat out.

    - There is apparently a 911 call that he was getting beaten up by police.

    - Police let his other friends, who were all drunk as well, drive the boat back, but only arrested Benson. This goes against LCRA protocol, which from my understanding is that if everyone is drunk, everyone on the boat is arrested, given PI (except for the operator, who is given a BWI/DWI/DUI), and the boat is impounded. This didn't happen, instead they let drunk people drive the boat away.

Does that add up to you Bill?

  2. My best friend from college is from south Texas and he saw Ced play in high school a few times. He said he was the best football player by far he'd ever seen. But there were rumblings even back then that he didn't have the desire and would skate by on his ridiculous talent when he got to UT.

I don't know...I really thought he was going to be one of the best backs from that draft. But maybe he just doesn't want it that bad...

Ced was a big pothead when he was here in Austin (hence the rumors that he'd be too "Ricky Williams-like"), and loved to party. Hell, I remember one of the football players he hung out with a bunch doing some hard sh-- the night before a drug test. No idea how he passed that one...

  3. I know it's a bit off topic,

but having lived in Chicago for most of Benson's career I've got to say he is a complete turd.

Chock him up along the likes of Mike Williams, as a guy that received a huge rookie contract and since then has no heart to actually play the game.

Well, maybe the following comment is actually on topic:

I have to say I think the police WERE being excessive when they said they had to use pepper spray to subdue him.

After watching him play, it's obvious all it takes is a slight tap to bring him down.

Quite frankly, I was a bit surprised when the Bears drafted him that high. He was blessed at UT with a strong offensive line, and he really only had one move - run over people. He was never very elusive or anything.

  4. I'll reserve judgment on either side, though neither version of the truth would surprise me. I do have one question though:

Why did the girl call her dad and ask that he call 911 instead of doing it herself from the phone in her hand?

The only thing I could think of was that she didn't want the boat police hearing what she was doing....but still a head scratcher to me.

That is one of the weird parts of the case. The other is, why the hell did the police let Benson's friends, who all apparently were drunk, drive the boat home?! That makes absolutely no sense either.

  5. Let me get this, Silly Hillary and McCain Super Fast Fries want to eliminate the gas tax for the summer.......if we can get rid of that for almost 1/4 of the year, how important was it to have the tax in the first place, and why am I paying $3.75 for it now?

I say keep the tax, and let the money continue to go wherever it is now, and lets go up to Alaska and get ourselves some oil, like we should have a decade ago

I'm not against drilling ANWR, but I haven't seen anyone demonstrate that it will actually reduce oil prices. In fact, I've seen almost everyone unanimously admit that it won't have any effect.

  6. As Gwen Ifill so aptly put on Charlie Rose last night, "White is a race, too." It is HIGHLY likely that there will be far more people in the general election that will vote for McCain because he is white than vote for Obama because he is black. Sad, but true.

    Ever study political psychology?

Being black is much less of a hindrance than being a woman....

  7. I'm surprised at the number of people defending Ced here, I actually expected more of an outcry against my posts (which, btw I thought were fairly even handed).

One of the funniest things I've seen is my best friend at UT was a French Canadian, and we were a bit messed up. We were hanging out with Ced, and Ced was a bit messed up (not on yayo btw), and he was completely scared of my friend. My friend was like 5'7", and Ced was huge compared to him, and Ced was scared

In all seriousness, I was initially inclined to believe APD, as I could definitely see Ced messing up and driving while messed up, but everything I know about the guy says he wouldn't act like a complete !@#$. Combined with the 911 call, and APD's rep, I'm inclined to believe Ced now

  8. Yeah, ok. Big football schools don't spend a ton of money processing the athletes through the academic side. I'm sure Vince was studying hard during finals week. :wallbash:

Course he wasn't, but do you really think it costs that much money to push a player through an academic program? Here at UT, the football players are typically in the same classes as everyone else - the difference, of course, being that football players are essentially assured of passing those classes.

  9. I too believe Benson. Pro athlests are not noted for doing whatever they wish, or for getting rowdy, drunk, stoned, and resisting arrest.

Cops are the problem. They like to take on dumb, rich, famous genetic mutants because it is fun.

I'm shocked that you'd be on that side, Bill.

Anyway, I didn't state that I believed Benson (hell, I know first hand that he loved to smoke), just that I was leaning toward his side now if that 911 call indeed happened, and noted that Austin has a history and reputation of a poorly run police department.

  10. And that makes Austin different than the rest of the country's municipalities how? Anyone with any street smarts knows exactly how the cops do what they want, when they want, and exactly how to circumvent the law. They are mostly POS worse than the communities they police.

Just offering up prior evidence that tries to establish a pattern of a poorly run law enforcement department is all.

  11. Before, I wasn't sure what the deal was, but now I'm starting to lean toward ced's side if this is indeed true.

I would absolutely not be shocked if Austin law enforcement pulled a stunt like that. This is, after all, the area that:

Its widely known in the Austin area that the regular cops will use reasons such as forgetting to signal to pull over minorities and search their vehicles/look for other violations, while not doing the same to white people. In addition, Austin has special police who make up reasons to pull people over and try to nail them for drunk driving or other such incidents (ex: claiming they had ran a red light).

  12. Not sure if many people here are Stewart Mandel fans, but I like reading his mailbag column (though don't always agree with him).

Anyway, in today's mailbag, he had one of the best answers ever:

I see you leave out the University of Michigan in your spring rankings. Even with the new coach, the new system and a question mark at QB, you don't see them as a top 25 team?

-- Aaron Wolfgang, Ft. Jackson, S.C.

Isn't that like saying, "Even with the ongoing mortgage crisis, plunging stock market and $4-a-gallon gas, you don't see the economy doing well?"
