  1. The reason I used Losman as an example is because my 10 year old nephew asked Greg if he thought Losman was going to be good. I'm sorry I did not make that clear, after all you were not in attendance that day. I don't claim anyone is beyond reproach, however 28 years in the same profession might indicate that individual had some experience. You are correct, he managed scouts and made recommendations to a GM, Jerry Angelo, who brought him to Chicago from NY. Angelo fired him and others in a job saving attempt . Angelo was eventually fired anyway. I'm unsure of your point, it is obvious that people in professional sports are fired often and move to other organizations. Greg Gabriel's 28 years in the NFL is a pretty good run. When he was fired he decided to retire. It wasn't like there were no offers. Please remember, I know him.

So your premiss is that a multi-billion dollar industry is wasting millions paying talent evaluates when all they really need to do is ask astute fans?

You state "Angelo fired him and others in a job saving attempt"

More excuses!! I wouldn't be surprised if these words are from Gabriel himself.( that's his style)

Agreed that Angelo was on the hot seat at the time, and a major reason for that was the Bears poor drafting at the time.

Did Angelo fire Greg Gabriel to save his job?

Gabriel was canned because Angelo was unhappy with his work and felt that the scouting department was in need of revamping.

YES ANGELO WANTED TO KEEP HIS JOB DESPERATELY- BUT HE FELT STRONGLY THAT GABRIEL WAS PART OF THE PROBLEM AND NOT A SOLUTION.

A fun side note is: Don't assume others on this board don't know Gabriel and others in the Bears organization a bit more than you do. (And not at the level of a friend of their sisters)

  2. The thing you gotta know about TBD is some folks just aren't happy unless they can crap on something. I enjoyed the OP's offering and much of the convo until the little clouds that cry appeared. Given this thread and the other good one on sorting out the truth of our OL, I'm feeling better about Williams.

I am glad you are feeling better about Williams after the guy who drafted him in the first round hypes him up.

One contributing factor to Greg Gabriel being fired by the Bears was his inability to scout and draft offensive lineman.

The Bears draft choices on the o/line during his tenure were brutal to say the least.

    Marc Colombo -

    Terrence Metcalf -

    Bryan Anderson -

    Tyler Reed -

    Aaron Brant -

    Chris Williams -

    Chester Adams -

    Kirk Barton -

    Lance Louis -

With a record of drafting offensive lineman like this- it's hard for me to get excited about Gabriel's comments.

  3. Some the Bears draft picks during his tenure are, Lance Briggs, Tommie Harris, Devin Hester, Johnny Knox and Nathan Vasher. My point is if you guys could do better then do it. Greg Gabriel started reviewing film for free and parlayed that into a 28 year career. I'm sure you have never made the wrong decision.

The indisputable fact is Greg Gabriel never actually made ANY of those picks. He never advanced high enough in the profession to be trusted with that responsibility.

Another fact is: he WAS a scout that WAS fired by the Bears.

  4. And Heff's point is still valid in that Gabriel doesnt get to the position he was at without paying his dues and being good at what he does....period. That is not disputable......there are only so many of those jobs and Gabriel had one of them.

Now regarding Williams....if he sucked so bad he wouldnt have started (and continued to start) for two separate teams. When you suck....you get benched. And WIlliams didnt.

John: You stated "When you suck....you get benched. And WIlliams didnt."

Actually, when you suck , you get cut. And Williams did.

  5. At least half the posters here had the same "prophesy" about Losman at the same time. Sometimes it's really not that hard....

Agreed. Using Losman as an example of Gabriel's acumen is extremely weak.

Gabriel was fired by the Bears for a reason and it wasn't because he was a scouting genius.(check their draft's the few years before he was canned)

He was able to latch on to a job with the NFP when no other teams came calling.

That he stands by a player he wanted to draft is not a shock.

The reality is Williams was a bust with the Bears, and was shuffled along the line(as Mike Williams was here) because they could not find a spot where he could play adequately.

Ultimately they decided that Gabriel's hand picked player wasn't even good enough to be on the team.

Scouting like that puts you on the unemployment line, and it did with Gabriel.

  6. Walter Football.Com Draft Grade:

    147. Tank Carder, LB, TCU: A+ Grade

Wow. Buffalo has really improved its roster this weekend. Tank Carder would have been a second-round pick if he hadn't played hurt this past season. He's a really talented linebacker with a great work ethic. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he made it into the starting lineup in a year or two.

  7. Highly respected Greg Cosell of NFL Films on Gilmore:

The best corner prospect in this draft is South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore. He has a chance to be a Charles Woodson-type player down the road: athletic, physical and competitive, playing outside in the base defense and in the slot in the sub-packages.

Cosell had him going third in his mock draft.

  8. I think Lawson would be a key signing this offseason. He played in a 3-4 with san francisco but is much more suited as a 4-3 Sam LB position. The Sam LB to me is our next biggest void on the D besides the pass rush. He's 28, had some injuries in the past but has been healthy the last few seasons. I think he is worth that risk and would be a solid move by the FO to solidify the front 7. Here is a quick write up:

Manny Lawson, OLB, Bengals. Age: 28.

As expected, Manny Lawson thrived in the 4-3. He was a stout run defender as a two-down strongside linebacker in Cincinnati's stop unit.

Shep and Barnett would be our 3-down LBs and Lawson on early/run downs. He signed a 1-year $3mil deal with Cincy, lock him up for 3 or 4 years at around that rate and we instantly have stability in our LB corps.

I say go after Mario or Avril along with Lawson in FA. On O, re-sign stevie and go after a meachem/manningham/garcon type WR. Draft Upshaw who is also strong against the run and play him at LDE with Mario or Avril at RDE (blindside). That would make for a pretty stout front 7.

    Barnett Shep Lawson

    (Williams/Avril) Dareus Williams (Upshaw/Kelsey)

Round 2 would be pretty wide open, I think CB is probably where we will get the most value and one of the following: Dennard (Neb), Gilmore (SC), Jenkins (N. Bama) and Minnefield (UVA) will be available at 42. OT is another possibility but there might be better value in Round 3 for that (Potter (BSU, Adcock (OSU), Datko (FSU)).

    I'm all for signing Lawson.

I was frustrated last off-season when we didn't sign him-

he certainly is much better than players we were planning to put on the field.

    Now we have another chance.

  9. My grandfather and father both worked for the Courier,

so reading the morning paper was an important part of my family's morning routine.

That being side, as a kid I remember always trying to get my hands on the Buffalo Evening News to read the sports.

    Felser was a must read.

During a time without smart phones, internet, 24/7 sports TV- the newspaper was our lifeblood for sports information.

Best wishes to Larry for a job well done!

  10. The following story illustrates the values with which Joe Paterno wanted to run the football program by at Penn State:

Jay Paterno, an assistant coach for his father—has never forgotten walking home with his father one day after a football game. That was the day he understood just what all this football coaching meant to Joe. Usually their talks revolved around certain plays, certain football decisions, but on this day Joe said, "Jay, you don't have any kids yet, but you will, and then I'll have my revenge." He smiled that smile. And then he said this: "You'll understand, once you have kids, that life changes. You'll find that your happiness is defined by your least happy child. You'll understand. Every player we have, someone—maybe a parent, a grandparent, someone—poured their life and soul into that young man. They are handing that young man off to us. They are giving us their treasure, and it's our job to make sure we give them back that young man intact and ready to face the world."

I really like this anecdote, and truly believe in the truism that Paterno states.

The question that I struggle with is:

Why didn't Joe Paterno think it applies to a 10 year old boy being raped by a friend in the facilities that he rules over?

Why isn't this boy considered a treasure?

Is it because he didn't play football and add to Paterno's legacy?

  11. From an interview from CBS Pitsburgh:

McKillop shared his opinion on his former coach Dave Wannstedt.

Wannstedt resigned Dec. 7, 2010, from the position. The Panthers went 7-5 last season, and Wannstedt went went 42-31 in six seasons.

“It was a little heartbreaking because I was actually around the facility when everything went down with Coach Wannstedt and what not,” McKillop said. “When someone who cares about his players as much as he did, for him to not get an opportunity to come back, it’s heartbreaking for the ex-players who looked to come around. Definitely, I’m a Dave Wannstedt guy.”
