More often after hockey games, but sometimes after football games, I like to see what the fans of other teams have to say on their message boards. Win or lose. I just like to read the other opinion, even if it maddens me (it often does).
Anyway. Last week, I read a Seahawks board. I only could find one that wasn't part of espn, nfl, scout, etc. The board that I did find was foul, mostly, which surprised me because it's Seattle, and it's supposed to be filled with mellow, coffee drinkin' folks. But this was like a Philadelphia Flyers message board instead. With double the death threats.
Today, a google search for "Jacksonville Jaguars Message Board" turned up nothing besides the Jags' official site and the page on scout.com that every team has. Kind of made me think (that's never good)...
1. We fill that bowl in OP almost always. Whether the team is good or bad, we seem to get right behind it. We don't need to leave sections "dark," even if the seats sell after "blackout hour," because we fill the stadium.
2. We have passionate fans who show up and who actually care about posting on at least two (that I know of) UNofficial message boards. We don't need a forum on bills.com or scouts.com or whatever (but it's nice that those forums are there). We have this, and at least one other independent site, to work with. Yeah, there are a lot of idiotic opinions (usually mine, when I post), but at least we have forums where opinions aren't controlled. Not every fan groups has that.
3. We can't spell for sh&t, and we have little, if any, command of the English language. But we do have regard for one another, even if it's disguised sometimes. What's really cool? Folks planning tailgate parties and even mid-week lunches (I'm looking at you, you Friday Nick Taho freaks) on a message board, even inviting strangers. I've lived in other NFL cities; I've never seen this sense of community among fans.
Again, I'm a hockey guy. I don't know football well (as a game), and I don't pretend to. But I do know that this area puts out more energy on a Sunday than Niagara Mohawk (or whatever it's called now) ships downstate in a year. Move freaking Jax to Toronto. Move the Raiders to LA (again). Put the Cardinals in Mexico City. But don't move this team. There aren't fans like this everywhere. Maybe in a few places. Not everywhere, not by a stretch.
Right on

Surprised to see us get caught like that. That and the blocked kick last week by the Seahawks were surprise whoops by ST.
Glad to see them early in the season - you know Bobby April won't allow that stuff in November & December.
-
The scary thing is that we could be 5-0 going in to the bye week - think about that. I had the Seahawks and Jags game as a 1-1 split at best at the start of the season. The Raiders stink, the Rams are pretty bad and the Cardinals are the Cardinals - good one week, bad the next. I haven't been this stoked in a while.
Go Bills!

My dentist for the Hydrocodone and to Beer.
Hooray for beer!!
Gotta love Trent today. It's a good feeling as a Bills fan when you get the ball back late in the fourth on the road and you know you're going to score. Can't wait until Hardy is a big part of this offense.

Win, lose or draw, Del Rio is, was and will be a dick.
Amen.
Good call on Stroud Jack!!!!!!

The Bills are winning the games they are supposed to win. This is what good teams do.
This is a good team folks.

Wow...
The Bills are the media darlings of the NFL this year it seems...I can't remember hearing so many positive compliments about players on this team in a long...long time---or at least until week 3 of the 2004 season was over....
Fred Jackson is the man. We haven't had a combo like this since Thurman & Kenneth Davis

Jacksonville Stadium: 73,000 capacity
The Ralph: 74,000+
If we tarped off seats we deserve to lose the franchise. How does Florida have three NFL teams????
-
Yeah, I took a bunch of pictures of those. While I met a few "true" Jaguars fans, the majority really are a fickle bunch...some of the photos towards the end are with 4-8 minutes left in the game, while Jacksonville still had the lead, and the place was 1/2 empty...
pathetic
nice shots - looks like a nice stadium. You got to see a good game.
Who are the brady twins???? wtf
We met at the Chargers game back in 06 - are you just doing the road trips now?
-
With the schedule is coming out on April 3rd who do you think the Bills opening day home opponent will be? We've got the Dolphins, Jets, Patriots*, Chargers, 49ers, Raiders, Seahawks and Browns coming to Buffalo this year.
I'm thinking Browns for some reason - and I'm looking forward to going already!!
-
The Jets are taking over McFaddens - isn't that the Bills Bar in NYC?????
-
Ted Washington and Chris Spielman
Spielman would have been the best if the injury didn't take him out - what a player. I have to go with Big Ted - Top Defense with him in the middle of the line. Let's hope Stroud can approach his level of play.
No love for London Fletcher from anyone????

I just finished A Man Without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut. I am currently reading Living Well by Montel Williams and Live from New York - An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live which is really a well organized chronological collection of anecdotes from people who were "there" from 1975 to 2001 by Tom Shales Shales and James Andrew Miller.
I opened Getting Stronger by Bill Pearle for some pointers before going to the gym this morning.
I also opened the New Testament today for some metaphysical inspiration.
Man without a country was great stuff - Vonnegut was one of the great American writers.
Here's two good newer fiction authors:
Charlie Huston - Caught Stealing/Six Bad Things/Dangerous Man. This trilogy is great stuff. Think Tarantino meets Bukowski and go from there. His Joe Pitt series is a good read too - vampire noir and it works.
Robert Ferrigno - Prayers for the Assassin + Sins of the Assassin. Set in a post nuclear attack US where the country has become divided into Islamic states and Southern Bible States. Very entertaining reads.

Top ten list of why I hate the New England Patriots:
10. The deification of St. Teddy Bruschi - enough already
9. The way important calls always seem to go their way i.e The tuck, Just give it to them, Pass interference on a Hail Mary, etc.
8. The fact that they hosed us with Drew
7. Ma$$hole fans - the biggest bandwagon jumpers I've seen in a long time. I remember when the Pats were #4 in that 4 sport town
6. Bob Kraft - I guess when he bought the Pats he paid for a few extra calls from the refs.
5. Route 1 in Foxboro - possibly the worst road in and out of a football stadium
4. Charging for seat license fees before being able to purchase season tickets at Foxboro stadium
3. Did I mention that I can't stand their fans?????
2. The fact that they have owned us for several years
1. And the number 1 reason I hate the Pats is Rodney Harrison. I hate that a punk like him is able to enjoy the success he has. Can't stand dirty players.

Wilfield is probably my favorite Bill since the early 90s. I just love watching the guy play. He lays it all out there on every single play and was vastly underated as a cover corner because of his size. I thought he was a better corner than Nate when he left and I think he still is.
Clements may have better hands than Antoine (more ints) but that is where it ends. Winfield is just as good a coverage guy and is probably one of the best tackling corners in the nfl. He was one of my favorite Bills while he was on the team it's a shame he and Pat left Buffalo but unfortunately that's the way the business is.
That being said, I'll applaud the two of them when they're introduced and then hope they both have off days on Sunday...

Fastow and the whole gang at Enron should all be hung from the nearest streetlight.

Coming up from Long Island for the game on Sunday and saw that the Sabres are at home on Saturday nite. I see the game isn't sold out but before I order tickets I thought I'd ask about availability of tickets at the arena on game night.
Is there much demand for pre-season Sabres games? What are the odds of finding some tickets on the cheap from scalpers at the arena?

I was glad to see Coy get the award but am I the only one who thought Brian Moorman had a better overall game? Five punts downed inside the 20 - he is unbelievable!!!

You have to give Mangini credit for even knowing about "Talking Proud" and getting a copy of it.
Personally, I would have preferred "Misty Mountain Hop" or the "Immigrant Song."
Actually, I think that the "Immigrant Song" would be a perfect song for the Bills to play at home games to get the crowd and team revved up. The lyrics would seem to apply:
Does Mangini have some Buffalo roots or connections? Like yourself, I couldn't believe he even knew about "Talkin' Proud".
Too funny - I think he should be spending more time figuring out who's gonna be running the ball for his team...
-
I know this was discussed soon after the departure of Drew & the drafting of Roscoe (I did searches on some of the old forums) - but can anybody recommend a place in Buffalo that will change the name plate on a jersey?
I've been looking at my Drew jersey gathering dust in the closet and wouldn't mind changing it to a Parrish one of these days.

That's a great record.
I used to be huge into the bootlegs and had a lot of good R.E.M. cassettes. Haven't listened to them in a good long while, though. Even so, their unplugged set was great. Surprised they never released it.
Some other choices of mine:
Miles Davis / Cellar Door Sessions
Coltrane / Live at the Village Vanguard
Tony Conrad and Faust / Outside the Dream Syndicate Alive
Richard Buckner / Live at Schubas Tavern
Dylan / any of the bootleg series that have come out including Live 1975, 1964, 1966.
I also have a couple Fugazi shows that they've started selling online. Good stuff.
The Dylan live 1975 bootleg disc is unbelievable - great stuff
three others:
Johnny Cash at San Quentin ( I think it's even better than Folsom)
Jerry Lee Lewis live at the star club - killer!
J Geils Band - Blow your face out

Time to predict the Bills record for 2006 - everybody join in!
Sept. 10 @ New England - Loss - Damn Patriots. Bills keep it respectable but Pats put it away in 2nd half.
Sept. 17 @ Miami - Loss - Long week to game plan helps the Fish win a close one.
Sept. 24 NY Jets - Win. Opening day at the Ralph - loud crowd and a bad Jets team. Bills win big.
Oct. 1 Minnesota - Win. Bills D steps up big time and wins a close one.
Oct. 8 @ Chicago - Loss. Bills can't win one for Dick and lose in Chicago
Oct. 15 @ Detroit - Win. This one they win for Dick.
Oct. 22 New England - Loss. Damn Patriots part 2
Nov. 5 Green Bay - Win. Bills look good after the bye week- JP out guns his hero.
Nov. 12 @ Indianapolis - Loss. Bills crash back to earth after big win
Nov. 19 @ Houston - Win. Bills beginning to win the games they should win.
Nov. 26 Jacksonville - Loss. If Taylor & Leftwich are both healthy, Jax is too much for the Bills.
Dec. 3 San Diego - Win. Surprise win of year. Bills D makes Rivers look like a rookie in upset.
Dec. 10 @ NY Jets - Win. Jets stink - more Bills fans than Jets fans at the swamp in Jersey. Jets on their way to top 5 pick.
Dec. 17 Miami - Win. Bill beat Fish in the snow.
Dec. 24 Tennessee - Win. See Houston game.
Dec. 31 @ Baltimore - Loss. Tough game but loss to Ravens knocks Bills out of wild card race.
While I would love to see our boys make the playoffs and win it all like everyone else here I really think 9-7 is a good possibility. If the staff sticks with JP I think he can work thru some early struggles and get it this season. I see them improving as the season goes on and would not be surprised to see them put together a strong December. I think the home games at the end of the season will help them.
There are a few other conditions that need to hold up for this to come thru:
1. TKO needs to be TKO. If he's back, this D will get the job done.
2. Peerless, Roscoe or Josh need to step up and keep the double teams off of Lee.
3. The o-line does it's job and keeps JP upright.
Let's go Bills!

"There are cornerbacks in our division that I threw to for more than 96 yards last year."

F ESPN!!!
I haven't watched that god awful channel since the nfl network came on the air, And if the nfl network doesn't give my Bills props I don't care! This is our team - we're here to give them the respect they deserve. The stuffed suits on the networks haven't got a clue about the quality team that is developing in Orchard Park.
