1. Rams insider Jim Thomas of the Post Dispatch was on the morning talk show here in St. Louis and here’s what he dished regarding the Rams:

    1.  Talks with Jim Bates for DC have fallen through.  It seems Bates wanted more than the Rams were willing to pay - $1 mil plus.

    2.  Greg Olson is just about wrapped up as the OC

    3.  Jim McNally was mentioned by Rams brass when discussing O-line coaches.

    Thought I’d pass it along.

Sean Payton in New Orleans has also targeted McNally for his O-line coach.  Man I sure hope ML and DJ hold on to McNally.  As for Bates, I don't think RW will pay that kind of money for a coordinator.

    581525

I am pretty sure McNally is under a new contract right now that was extended right before Mularkey resigned. Of course Jauron would have to want to keep him but I can't imagine a better option out there.

  2. You thought you heard it?  Well, then...it must be true.

MM was a good OC before the Bills hired him and he'll probably be a good OC for whoever hires him next.

    577440

Two facts I know for sure:

    1. The Bills offense struggled overall and their 4,122 yards were the fewest produced by Buffalo in a 16-game season last season.

    2. Buffalo went 14-18 and ranked 25th and 28th in offense in two seasons under Mularkey.

Any way you look at it, that is piss poor. I for one do not think the offensive talent on the Bills last year was the worst ever in their history. Recording the fewest yards ever in their history is not a testament to a great offensive mind.

  3. YOu guys are making a career out of dissing Mularkey.  Be careful what you wish for.  I think he is a much better coach than you are giving him  credit for.

    Besides, it's getting beyond tiresome.

    577226

I thought I heard that Pittsburgh was going to fire Mularkey as their O coordinator before we hired him as our head coach??

  4. Totally objectively, check out this comparison. I only have the Bills being better at one, maybe two, defensive positions. Our D is FAR AWAY from rejoining the NFL's elite:

LE Courtney Brown or Chris Kelsay? Brown Broncos

LT Michael Myers or Justin Bannon? Myers Broncos

RT Gerard Warren or Tim Ansderson? Warren Broncos

RE Trevor Pryce or Aaron Schobel? Tie

WLB Ian Gold or Takeo Spikes (when healthy)? Tie (depending on Spikes health next year)

MLB Al Wilson or London Fletcher? Wilson Broncos

SLB D.J. Williams or Jeff Posey? Williams Broncos

LCB Champ Bailey or Nate Clements? Bailey Broncos

RCB Domonique Foxworth or Terence McGee? McGee Bills

SS Nick Ferguson or Lawyer Milloy? Tie

FS John Lynch or Troy Vincent? Lynch Broncos

    Thoughts????

  5. turned out to be a solid NFL starting end, did well in STL and is doing well in seattle.

    7th round pick.

why did we let him go?

    oh, that's right.

    TD.

we have let too much talent go in the past 5 years, we are like the raptors

    574812

I saw him get a sack (I think it was last week) and could not believe it. I completely forgot about the guy and was so pissed off that we let him go and now he is doing well. Good for him though.

  6. What the pay issue here is likely that if Gray goes to another NFL team, the agreement is that the Bills woul only owe him an amount that a new contract is less than the one he is currently working under with the Bills (for example if he had gotten the Texan HC job it would have paid more than the Bills DC contract and we would owe him nothing.

However, if he leaves the NFL, the Bills would owe him the full contract he signed with us (I am pretty sure we extended and upped his deal earlier this year before the bottom fell out on D production).

The Bruins recognizing that Gray would take down a bunch o cash that the Bills owe him may well have wanted him to take a compensatory cut forBruin duty.  As Wade did, I could see him taking his check and going to little league football games if the Bills let him go.

Don't be so sure on the Bills paying his salary regardless of where he goes next year....stay tuned on this one.

  7. So, the morning after the Levy announcement - where was everybody?  Wilson in Detroit, Levy in Chicago, Modrak in Georgia(?)....  Nobody around around, no one to answer to, the staff at OBD left swinging in the wind....

Contacts within the organization say the atmosphere is !@#$ed up.  They are on pins and needles and that was BEFORE the MM announcement.

There is talk within the organization that Jerry Gray, knowing that he was going, may have not put forth <cough, cough> his best effort the last couple of games and maybe even made some ridiculous calls on pupose.  Reportedly Sabo and him got into it because some of the coaches understood the absurdity of what Gray was doing.  This may be horseshit, but the fact that people are talking about this at OBD is messed up.

MM wanted to resign last week, but was talked into staying (thus the delay into naming the HC), but after seeing how he was going to have to rebuild his staff and the lack of interest in joining a guy with a death watch - he said screw it.  He had a good working relationship with TD.

Source still claims JG is gone and has been gone - doesn't understand why the lack of a public announcement.  Perhaps some deal was struck, so that he was "retained" until he found other work.

That's it!  It may be 100% right/wrong or a mix of the two, but that is what I heard.

    565016

I heard something VERY similar on a couple of your points.

Szabo and Gray reportedly got into it, big time; however, I never heard anything about Gray making bad calls on purpose and find that impossible to believe.

I also heard the exact same thing about JG being gone already and not announcing it until he finds another job.

  8. Clements

    Schobel

    Edwards

    Jennings

    Williams

    Reed

    Denney

Find 5 teams that got more players than this out of the same 4 drafts.

That would put TD's drafts in the Top 15%

Find 10 teams that got more players than this out of the same 4 drafts.

That would put TD's drafts in the top 1/3rd of the league.

Find 15 teams that got more players than this out of the same 4 drafts.

That would put TD's drafts in the top half of the league.

How many teams can you find that have done better?

    553641

hmmmm...find four teams with worse records over the past five years and this puts TD's regime smack dab in the bottom of the league. Keeping the lousy players you draft does not mean you are succesful!

  9. I think that any influence Marv can have on this organization is a positive. He always was classy and emphasized intelligence. I also thought part of the reason the current team was not "mentally tough" was because management no longer focused as much on the intelligence of the players.

I also don't have a problem with his age. If you read his book and understand his history and character, this should not be a concern.

I can only imagine the types of guys on this team with Marv's influence...hungry, smart, more small school...bring back the Jamie Muellers, Andre Reeds and Don Beebes.

Here are some classic Marvisms from the past:

"There is a tremendous tendency when you don't win to ask whose fault it is rather than to seek out a solution"

"Expect rejection, but expect even more strongly to overcome it"

"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender"

"Adversity is an opporunity for heroism"

This could be a great chapter in NFL history...the old man coming back and turning it around!!! At the least, I for one will be more supportive of this team and organization because I believe in Marv.

Brandon (Buffalo): Would the Bills be better off starting fresh by firing Mularkey and replace him with one of the recently fired head coaches with more experience? Donahoe is only part of the problem...

Chris Mortensen: (11:32 AM ET ) I didn't think Donohoe was any of the problem and I think Mularkey should only be removed if there is a strong philosophcal difference. If I were a Bills fan, I'd be alarmed by the developments. I really would.

    552486

Does "alarmed" mean the same thing as "relieved" or "excited about"?

  11. You know what really bugs me about Bledsoe getting run out of town is that our D blew that Pittsburgh game last year as well. Willie Parker literally ran over Lawyer Milloy on that long run and NOBODY ever talks about that play. That was just a sign of things to come in 2006.

Not saying we would be in much better shape with Bledsoe right now, I just think the all the blame he received was unjustified.

My opinion is that Bledsoe or Holcomb is a wash. Both have their plusses and minuses. Big Arm and Holds the Ball Too Long vs. Noodle Arm and Gets Rid of the Ball Quick?

  12. They were 9-7 last year.  This year has been horrible.  But the team seems to have a reasonable level of talent--the Bengals game seems to indicate at least that much.

The team clearly needs help on both lines. They especially must finally focus time effort and money on putting together at least a B quality line.  But they have some cap room and all their draft choices plus the Henry pick and maybe some comp picks in which to do this.  On the O-line, say you start with Peters, Preston and Gandy(at guard).  They need to find at least two quality lineman(3 would be great but I'm at least trying to be somewhat realistic), a tackle and a guard.

On defense, they need interior lineman--get some. Spikes will be back, hopefully fine by all forecasts. Crowell takes over for Posey. They tag Clements, they tweak the rest of the D, say replace Vincent.

You do that, plus get Everett in as TE, why can't this team get a lot better faster.  I know they have to make some good personnel decisions, and I know that mistakes might be made in that regard in the past, but maybe this isn't so hopeless after all.  I mean, look at how teams like the Giants turned it around quickly.

    543461

I really hope Clements is gone. He is overrated and way too full of himself. Our D has been lousy with him all year anyway. Better to save the $$ and find a young guy (or three) with a good attitude that we can hopefully win with.

  13. Whatever man.  We can say all week that it is better to lose, it will help our draft slot, etc.  It's all a bunch of B.S.  We're setting ourselves up for the loss we all think is coming.  I knew the game meant nothing, and losing can help the future team via draft selections.  But once the game starts, losing never seemed like a good idea.  I was so happy watching McGee return the kick and the pick....And I had money on the Bengals!!! :D  It was a wonderful Xmas surprise-- frustrating, yes, because we knew this team was capable of playing with the big dogs, they just never actually proved it.

I've seen the Bills fold so many times and lose games exactly like Saturday's game.  That's why I was so happy they won.

And by the way, it's not where you draft, it's who you draft.  The shtty Patriots are down to 4th stringers at some positions, and they've been drafting last in each round.

    543102

Totally agree 100%. The draft is a crap shoot as we all know with Mike Williams. Better to win now and hope to get lucky in the draft. Way too many first round busts over the years to play this game.

  14. He looked pretty fast to me on the reverse kickoff...definitely faster than Kelso ever looked. Also looks like he has moved ahead of Baker on the draft chart. Seems like he will get his shot in training camp next year. We could really use a break finding some good players, hope he is a nice surprise for us.

  15. I was looking at some past draft picks and if the Bills draft smartly this year, we should be a Super Bowl contender in another year or two no problem  Of course this assumes we have a new coach and GM in place with no connections to Pittsburgh whatsoever!!

All we need to do is replicate our success in previous drafts like this:

Round 1: Bruce Smith, DE (should be no problem finding another DE like this at the top of the 2006 draft)

Round 2: Thurman Thomas RB (we can trade McGahee for all I care and pick up a couple of extra late round picks) Other attractive options would be another Phil Hanson, DE, Will Wolford, G, Daryl Talley, LB or Nate Odomes, CB

    Round 3a: Don Beebe, WR

Round 3b (from Tennessee): Jamie Mueller, FB (God, I loved the way that guy played)

Round 4: Andre Reed, WR (or even Chris Burkett would be better than our current backups)

Round 5: John Holecek, LB (Bills draft history in rounds 5 and 6 is pretty scary over the past 15 years or so)

    Round 6: Corbin Lacina, G

Round 7a: Mark Pike, DE (we'll get all these extra 7th round picks when we dump McGahee)

Round 7b: Butch "Shake, Rattle and" Rolle, TE

Round 7c: Keith McKellar, TE (was actually a 9th round pick)

Round 7d: House Ballard, T (was actually an 11th round pick)

Then we can grab another Pat Williams and Jason Peters as UFAs and we should be able to easily claw our way back above .500 next year assuming our new coach does not suspend too many of our top players each week !!
