This is where I've been at for a few seasons now.

I understand why people are risk averse. I understand that, to some people, blowing up half a draft to get ONE guy seems foolhardy.

But I look and see a team that has had "depth and balance" for years now, and when the playoffs hit, they invariably get beat by teams who have a star at least one position other than QB. The Chiefs with Kelce and then Chris Jones. The Bengals with Ja'Marr Chase. We don't have -- and haven't had -- that second guy.

I think last season proved something to me. It was supposed to be the "necessary reset, purge the veterans, take your cap medicine" year, and the Bills were supposed to regress. But they DIDN'T regress! They came as close to the Super Bowl as they ever have under Beane and Allen. That told me that as long as Josh Allen is quarterback and as long as they have the culture in place that they do, they'll always be contenders. To me, that means that they can take some swings on stars now. It's okay. Blowing up half a draft to land a blue chip talent won't destroy them this year or for years to come.

So yes. I'm all for trading up and trying to hit a home run. I'm fine throwing caution to the wind a little bit and trusting the program these guys have built and GOING FOR IT a bit more. Whether it's a star edge or corner or receiver or whatever. If you think he can finally be that SECOND GUY that we have lacked, go get him. It'll be fine. Enough risk aversion.

To me, it's about probabilities and bust rate.

The highest we could reasonably trade would be fringe top 10. There's no sure things there. If we trade 3 picks for 1 bust it'll really hurt.

I also think you have better odds of finding an elite player with 3 bites in the top 60 than 1 bite in the top 13 or whatever.

He may not be. He had a slow recovery on the knee, maybe the same is true on the Achilles.

If this is a “player/coach” type move, we overpaid by about $6.7 million.

My guess is the 'up to' is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

How are Schoen and Daboll still employed?

2 stooges looking for the third.

imagine being Giants fan since those 2 swam to shore in jersey.

They both look totally out of their depth but I think ownership is a contributing factor. They've should have been rebuilding but were stuck trying to be competitive to save their jobs.

    They will be drafting Sanders

I agree but that makes signing 2 vet qbs all the more wierd.

Either they have no plan or can't get anyone to take their money.

Hope he sucks so NYG can pick first and take Arch Manning in the draft. Out of conference.

    I'd rather tank for Manning.

Tanking for Manning doesn't work for Schoen or Daboll who will be out on their a$$ with another rough year.

  5. This is the wrong year to try and trade a RB.

I read Daniel Jeremiah say it's the best RB class he can remember. You'll be able to pluck very good players in the 4th and 5th rd. Nobody is giving up a pick for the privilege of paying him 15 per. You'll be able to draft people 90% as good for 5% of the cost.

Most likely scenario is he plays out the season and either moves on or is tagged.

    We could do that.

If Pegula will sign the checks.

It's tiresome to listen to people endlessly blow Roseman. He's an excellent GM but it doesn't take a genius to add 4 void years to every deal. It takes an owner willing to spend more than the others.

Their success is about Lurie as much as it is Roseman.

How does the line look with stationary QB? Sort of hard to tell. Allen is never in the pocket for more than 3 seconds.

    It's still very good.

I played oline for 12 years. I can tell you that in some ways it's harder to block for somebody who is constantly moving. What may be a safe redirection angle on 1 play puts your man in his lap the next.

There are probably as many instances of Josh creating his own pressure with happy feet in clean pockets as there are times he bails them out making free rushers miss.

  8. For YEARS, the big complaint was the oline. 'Build a dominant line',  'Keep Josh upright', 'Fix the line and everything takes care of itself'.

They did. We are paying 2 blue chip tackles. We just wrapped a season in which we probably had the best, most consistent offense in the league. And yet the 'Josh does it with no help, we need to invest in the offense, get him weapons' narrative thrives.

    I don't get it.

  10. Beane's comments made it sound like they were already not on the same page with Benford on value. This pretty much ends any likelihood of an extension IMO.

They'll draft a corner early and go from there. If he gives them confidence over the course of the season he can be a CB1 I think they'll move Benford. If not, they'll tag him and reconsider after another year.

A couple months ago Benford was my 1st priority to resign. Then he took back to back concussions to close the season with the 2nd one of the scary variety. Add that to him apparently chasing top dollar and I think he's now a guy you let someone else pay if you have a reasonable replacement.

Get me a Dion Dawkins restructuring to free up $10million, a Benford extension, and Asante Samuel Jr, and then bring on the draft and get me BPA all day.

I would have thought Benford was 1st priority of the potential extensions. Now I'm wondering if the 2nd concussion has scared them off.

I wouldn't be shocked to see them wait and see how the season goes and revisit half way through.

  12. If we can get him at a compensation level ($ and draft picks) that doesn't compromise fixing the defense, great. He'd fill the biggest question mark on O. That said, I'll never understand this idea that we need to prioritize resources to the offense.

It's like a person over-complicating weight gain/loss. Calories in VS calories out. Points for VS points against. It's exponentially more difficult for a top 2 offense to add 5 ppg than a bottom 10 defence to reduce 5 ppg.

All the complaints about previous defense investment are the very definition of sunk cost fallacy and irrelevant. It's still the area that most needs attention and the area most likely to hold us back.

Why are you glad though? They can do it and add void years. We won’t feel the big cap hits for years.

You keep saying this, as if it's just a choice that Beane can make.

It comes down to Pegula writing the checks.

If he isn't willing to spend like Lurie, Beane can't stack a roster like Roseman.

Only pulling a player is not allowed. That doesn't ever get called, though. Not since the early 90's.

I'd have to dig up the rule to read the definition but as I recall, neither are technically allowed.

Maybe my memory is bad but I feel like it changed much more recently than the 90s.

I actually think it ought to be banned. It’s just not a skill play.

They don't even really need to ban it. Just start enforcing the rule on assisting a runner.

For most of the history of the game it was illegal to push a ball carrier like that. For some reason they stopped penalizing it unless a guy was pulling vs pushing.

Have you heard McD be so critical of a rookie player before?

I haven’t that I can recall. I’m not sure he even said stuff like this about Elam.

He rarely speaks publicly about any player this way.

They are obviously pissed. The only thing that pushes him to this is when a player is lacking 'Bills DNA' and needs a wake up call.

We are going to start hearing chatter about how he wasn't being a 'pro' and needs to take things more seriously. Hopefully he responds accordingly.

  17. If you asked in the 1st half of the year people would be saying it was an excellent draft. If you ask in the 2nd half, you'd say it was terrible.

We'll see in a year. Truth will probably be somewhere in the middle.

Maybe, I dunno, hire a few Defensive PLAYERS, the ones who can either rush the QB or be within either the TV picture or 5 yards of the WR!

    Little updates, like that.

Maybe, I dunno, wait for the season to end before whining about not bringing in players.

Little details, like free agency not even beginning for more than a month yet.

Butler had no great NFL sucess in BUF or with HOU before.  McDermott grabbed him when he and the entire Texans staff were fired at end of 2017 season and he became DB coach (2018-2021) and then DB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator in 2022-2023 for Bills.   He was a high school team mate of McDermott in Philly which is why he likely was hired.  Even with that prior connection, McDermott chose Babich as his new D Coord over Butler.

Butler spent 2024 with the Nebraska Cornhuskers and was just named 2025 D Coordinator for them..

We consistently had one of the best pass defenses in the league when he was here.

You mean like Bernard flashed last year? Who was the LBers coach?

Or like in 2021 when Poyer finally was named All Pro? Wonder who the Safeties coach was then?

Both instances...it was Babich. Look, I'm not going to say Babich was great this year. He had some real rough games. But he got some seasoning and hopefully went through some personal growth. I do think maybe McDermott gave him a bit of a long leash and let him go. I kinda feel like maybe McDermott should have been a bit more hands on with him. My personal feeling without basis of what's know what happened behind the scenes. Maybe a bit more mentorship was needed.

And you didn't see any growth in Bishop late in the year? Odd.

The choice in the offseason was Babich or Butler but Babich isn't who I'm referring to here. I liked Babich and agree, he helped develop talent in prior years. Choosing Babich as DC led Butler to leave and created a hole to be filled.

    Jahmille Addae - CB coach.

    Scott Booker - Nickel coach.

    Joe Danna - Safeties.

Are these the right guys? That's my question.

Re: Bishop, I've said elsewhere that he did improve a bit and that he flashed a couple times in the game. That said, is anybody satisfied with what we got out of our RD 2 Safety this year? He was a disappointment overall.

People predict a down year for the Bills. They responded by being a dropped pass from having a chance to go to the SB. Fans want to fire everybody.

    Tale as old as time

I'm not a fire everybody, blame the coaches guy. I'm typically more patient than most. I'm also a Jimmies and Joes over X's and O's guy. I started a thread saying this loss was more on players coming up small than coaching.

I'm just not convinced we've got the right people in the DB room. It was likely the worst season of DB performance under McD.
