  1. It's hard on a human level but if we want to be a Super Bowl team, moves like this need to be made. You can't hang onto an aging player for sentimental reasons.

At least not when you're in a poor cap situation.

Can’t be lazy with Josh. You might be the 4th option and all of a sudden the ball hits you in the helmet. Play every snap like you’re getting the ball when playing with Josh.

Yeah, I totally get this. I haven't studied his tape and I don't know if the "lazy" tag is accurate or not.

If so, it's a big red flag. I read in a combine interview that he likes to "vary" the speed of his routes:

"I never run routes full speed," said Mitchell during Friday's press conference. "That's just a part of my game that allows me to run routes for the whole drive and mostly just feel like I'm in control.

I'd like to know if the root of this, no pun intended, is laziness or something else.

These Cover 1 kids give me way more insight than any Bills beat reporter. Interesting that they like Mitchell and Legette a lot. They acknowledge Mitchell's apparently lazy route running as "vibing" on routes. His interview with the Bills should be interesting.

But why do I feel like they are addicted to Dungeons and Dragons? Never saw this new guy before but he looks it too.

I'm not saying they are wrong. I would be happy if Beane takes him at 28 (or moves up into the 20s somehow)

In the same token, if 28 rolls around and Mitchell and Franklin and McConkey and Worthy and Devontez Walker and Legette and Coleman are all there, and there is a very clear answer to "who replaces Von Miller?" or "who anchors our secondary for the next five years?" I can see waiting until round 2.

I'd take the DE or WR who has a better chance of being blue-chip. We have very few of those players and need more. But if Beane decides the DE has a brighter future and can be elite, not just 8-10 sacks, but elite, take him. But make damn sure you get a good receiver soon after.

    Here's the thing for me:

Obviously, I want a WR who could take over for Diggs in a year or two and this seems to be the draft to do it.

But maybe Beane is looking at his board and says "Thomas Jr. is the last WR1, the rest are all complementary pieces. If he's gone before I can even get close and an edge rusher is there for the taking I can get a complementary piece almost anywhere in 2nd or using my bevy of picks to get into the top of round 3"

I couldn't be mad at that.

I hear you. But I think many smart people think Mitchell will be a number 1 guy and he should be available close to where we pick.

We'll see soon enough. If we got this DE, I wouldn't hate it — if we get a speed merchant later who's a bona fide number 2.

With a trade like this do the Bears also acquire his contract that he had with the Bills or do the Bills still have that against their cap because of the 5th round pick makes them even ?

Stupid minds about the cap want to know !

Spotrac says the Bears pick up his 4 million per year deal for 2 years.

  7. Thanks, guys.

So Marquise Brown is 2 inches shorter and the same weight and Jordan Addison is the same height and 8 lb heavier.

Not a huge history of precedents at this size... And I would argue that 8 lb makes a difference. If it doesn't subtract it from 165 and see if that doesn't scare the hell out of you.

I think this kid could make a lot of big plays but I'd be willing to bet a couple good hits from some NFL safeties might take him out for a while...

  8. well, most of us want a WR but I wouldn't hate getting a guy with 23.3 sacks in the last 2 years and a player some call the most polished edge rusher in the draft.

Now, if we did that, I would expect a trade up, again, for a guy like Legette or someone comparable... We'd lose a lot of draft capital in 2 trade-ups... but is getting the best pass rusher and an explosive receiver worth it? I've seen worse drafts.

Who is to say that any of these wide receivers are better better than Gabe Davis

He seems to fit the traits that we are losing with Gabe. He’s a little faster seems to have a little bit better ball skills.

"Ok, I'll say it, I'll say it! Ann-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-ny rookie wide receiver we take in the first or second round will be better than GABE *****-IN' DA-VIS. That's right I said it. Gabe is a good guy, I will give you that, and he's made a few highlight plays, I'll give you that, but why do we have to pay him like a star? Is it his birthday or something?"

Contract talks must not be doing well. Beane talked about Douglas in past tense at his combine presser(WGR 550). That is what caused all this speculation. I would want him resigned if contract demands are not excessive.

He's under contract this 2024 season. Unless a restructure is 100% needed, there's no need for contract talks.

Agreed, I’d extend him another year to spread his cap out.

I wouldn't be against it. He turns 30 in late August so next year he would be 31. I wouldn't go beyond that.

The only reason for letting him go (and after investing a 3rd round pick) I can think of is a macro D philosophy shift to more man and Douglas doesn't match up well there. In that case, why not try and trade him for a 4th or 5th? He played as well as you could have hoped for last season for the Bills.

I largely agree on this. Like I’ve said elsewhere on this board, I’m basically ready to punt on the idea of pressuring Mahomes in the playoffs. It’s been about 3 straight years of throwing huge resources at the pass rush with nothing to show for it in the playoffs. If those moves had panned out, they’d have been great, and maybe it just comes down to Von Miller getting hurt. But they didn’t pan out, and I think it’s fair to say we try a different tack at this point.

Hap is right that we’ve had a mid season swoon for a while now, and since Daboll left we’ve had big consistency problems on offense. I think it’s fair to ask for a better overall coaching ouevre next year, especially on offense. And that could help a lot, regardless of talent. But I don’t think we’re gonna get Andy Reid level coaching anytime soon. And Spags is back for at least one more year. If we face them in the playoffs again, he’s gonna be willing to play press man and dare our guys to win those 1 on 1s. Up till recently, Diggs was that guy, and would feast when any DC tried that. Diggs wasn’t that guy down the stretch. The best case (plausible) scenario is that he was playing hurt. If that’s true, then we really need a second guy in case Diggs gets hurt again. The other plausible scenario is that Diggs is starting to show signs of slowing down. And if that’s true, we ESPECIALLY need another guy.

Having said all that, I just want to point out that Leonard Floyd and Deonte Harty each signed for about $9 million, right? Some of the WR names I’ve seen thrown around could very easily be worse than Harty, and Floyd absolutely helped us win games. So I’m a little more agnostic on where those few veteran FA dollars should go. I just want them to be well spent in hindsight.

My bottom line: I still think we need to commit significant resources to the offensive skill players, most notably at WR. Unless someone crazy falls all the way to us, our first draft pick should be a WR. And I’d have no problem if they went WR again in round 2 or 3.

Hypothetical question: What if we drafted a repeat of 2013? Basically meaning we draft this year’s versions of Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin? I’m not sure if I’d be happy or disappointed.

Harty's deal was 9.5 million but for two years. Floyd's was up to $9 million for one year, based on incentives. Vastly different deals.

  13. Too bad for him, honestly, but the team has to look out for the team.

I remember a theory floated here that Beane had some agreement with Hines after some restructure or something so that the Bills wouldn't cut him. Do I remember correctly?

$5 million for a back-up RB is insane. Beane did what he had to do.
