  1. I like Joe a lot. Wish his podcast had film and more graphics but I think he knows a lot and like to listen often. Didn't see this here and I thought it merited some attention.

What he says here is interesting, and his conclusion may not please a lot of folks here.

    Some broad highlights:
    1. Recapping the obvious: the Bills play the Chiefs very well in the regular season, in the post-season, not so much

    2. As good as Mahomes is, his QB rating against the Bills in the playoffs is far, far higher than against other teams. I roughly recall a 20-point difference or so.

    3. The Chiefs have been very good at letting good players go at the right time

    4. Mahomes will obviously be good for a long time, and Jones for a while still, but hopefully a 35-year-old Kelce starts to decline

    5. This is the big one — the Bills can't just "out score" the Chiefs in the playoffs, we have to get D line pressure on Mahomes, who might have been sacked just 3 times (if I recall) in 3 playoff games against the Bills.

Joe says this last point is key: pressure that actually gets to Mahomes in the playoffs. Other teams sack him; we don't. He's not invincible but the Bills falter — in the playoffs — getting to Pat.

Joe doesn't get to breaking down what we've been doing wrong and what we can do better but he doesn't think the key is simply getting better on offense. And he points out that Josh always comes to play against KC in the playoffs.

Keep arguing all you want about Bills WRs but the Bills D-line is a big question mark, if not concern, when it comes to stopping our nemesis when it counts.

The 10 kids in of itself isn’t the issue, Phil Rivers has no problem supporting his own, it’s the fact he’s had those 10 kids with 8 different baby mamas, that’s where he done fu*ked up.

I don't know why these pro athletes who like to spend time with a lot of women don't get fixed. It can be undone when their career is over... That could literally save them millions.

It's what I would do (hell, I got fixed without millions on the line).

  3. Tyrod Taylor was tough to watch for me. Couldn't throw a guy open, just threw safe balls to guys who were standing still.

I don't remember exact moments but I probably was pretty upset with Maybin on D — Eric Woods yelling at him in practice was priceless: "Give back the money you stole!"

Coaches: Jauron was as lifeless as his zombified face.

But there was so much bad for so long it's hard to single out guys.

Neither do I see "explosion",as a physical attribute, as a characteristic of Coleman's game.

I think "explosion" is not quite the right word but perhaps what @Mat68 was referring to is that Coleman is fluid and efficient when catching the ball and transitioning into moving forward. I've seen Cover 1 breakdowns of this, I believe, and it's similar to Kincaid: as they are preparing to catch, they are pointing their body and almost in the transition of moving forward before or at the time of the catch. Many players don't do this well but Coleman does so he gets more YAC than you would think based on his timed speed.

McCaffrey was traded during the season. So technically not his first season.

Diggs has already proven he can establish a relationship with a young QB

    What questionable history?

    Many of us love Diggs

    1. CMC's first off-season with the 49ers he showed up for OTAs. Digg's first off-season he has not.

    2. I'm not questioning if Diggs CAN establish a relationship. I'm questioning if it's more prudent, practically and in terms of optics (not only to the press and fans but to teammates) if he shows up as soon as possible.

    3. "What questionable history?" Mea culpa. You got me there. Diggs has zero questionable history.

    4. Your statement does not negate mine that many do not like DIggs; both can be true.

    So did Christian McCaffrey.

    Differences are:

    1. In McCaffrey's 1st season post-trade he DID show up at the 49ers OTA
    2. Diggs needs to establish a connection with a new young QB
    3. Diggs has a questionable history and perhaps attending a voluntary practice might be a show of good faith and commitment
    4. Many of us don't like Diggs :)

  7. Hit: MVS. I think we will be a very serviceable #3 guy for Josh.

Possible minor hit: Claypool. It's very, very, very early but him will to play ST is a great sign. I don't expect him to become a number 1 but maybe he can be a 3ish to 2ish guy if he continues with his McD-vetted new attitude. Did I make the disclaimer it's very early?

Possible hit: Elam. Lots of physical talent. The kid has flashed before in the past. Just not consistent and possibly not a great attitude. But he only just turned 23. Lot's of time for growth and maturity.

Bust: Miller. Too old to come back from that kind of injury and the early returns last year weren't that great. Can he get 3 or 4 sacks? Sure. Can he be a regular difference maker. I don't expect it. Could be his last season.

  8. Regular season high-level overall defensive play is not enough. We need to do it consistently in the playoffs. I know, injuries, great teams, but a defensive specialist needs to rise to the occasion in big moments and raise his game, not lower it.

MVS worked very nicely in the playoffs. We only wished Diggs was a playoff performer for us.

He's not a feature guy but he will produce as a 3 or 4 in the playoffs.

I think Beane, based off of his Chris Long interview, is banking on Kincaid being a top-five TE this year.

So we lost a few guys. Most notably AJ Highsmith who was a Senior National Scout and has gone to the Titans as the Director of Scouting.

I don't mind saying now he has moved on that AJ was one of my sources within the organisation. Someone I have had a DM level relationship with for a while (pre-dating him being with the Bills). Absolutely top guy and a fantastic talent evaluator. Loss for the Bills but this guy is going to to top. I wish him the very best with Tennessee. He had 3 or 4 teams interested in him. I might be biased but if we move on from McBeane before this guy is a GM he would be my absolute #1 candidate.

Do you know how high, or not, AJ was on Coleman?

Several people have tried to grow grass inside, it doesn't really work well.

Honestly, I'm skeptical of a grass field in Buffalo at all.  It will be fine until mid-November. What happens when it gets 2 feet of snow on it?  How do you empty out the stadium without driving heavy equipment on the field? How do you drive heavy equipment on the field without destroying it?  The grass has to be heated from underneath so it keeps growing, fine, so the field won't freeze either, meaning it will still be relatively soft.  They will need grow lights, etc similar to what they use in England soccer to keep the grass growing because it's too dark in the winter, plus the shade the stadium and overhang itself will create.  I'm less worried about the grass growing provided that they are committed to making it happen properly, but the removal of the inevitable large snowfalls is a question.  Also resodding.  If they have to resod in say January can they get the soil warm enough for the roots to take?

    If I'm Captain Dumba$$ you're Captain Buzzkill!

  12. Maybe I'm Captain Dumba$$ here but I just saw the Beane interview with Chris Long (really good, thanks, @Alphadawg7, and worth a watch for a lot of reasons) but Beane said in in that the field will have grass and you can't have grass in a dome.

    I didn't know domes couldn't have grass.

Maybe 98% of folks here know that but for the one other dumba$$ here, thee ya go. Players prefer grass so that's a big plus.

Beane was on Green Light with Chris Long again today.  It's a great interview overall, and towards the end Long asked him who the most underrated player on the Bills is.  Here is what Beane and Long had to say about Shakir (and Taron too).

It's clear Beane sees Shakir as key piece to this offense moving forward based on the numerous times he has been mentioned by not only Beane, but Allen, the other coaches, and other players.  Im really looking forward to seeing him in this offense.

    MOST UNDERRATED

Below is the full interview too if you haven't already seen it in the other thread just about this full interview.  If link above doesn't work, its at 27:06

Really good interview gives some perspective on what Beane is thinking about offense, and about Brady and other stuff.

Of note: the new stadium has grass and they can't do grass in a dome. Maybe everyone knows this but I didn't. But to the booze!

Getting the feeling that Hyde is going to sit out as long as he can to save his body, maybe reserve himself for a mid-season signing if the defensive backfield needs a boost for a playoff run...

Maybe he's waiting to see how the team (particularly the new offense) looks. No point risking his health if we don't have a legit shot to make a run.

Eh joe isn't perfect but he's passionate and hardworking. But he has bad takes at times too.

Hearing him fawn over Edmunds and

    not see the Bernard fit

    Is one example.

    But he's awesome.

If he was right 100% of the time in his scouting he'd making a lot more money as part of player personnel for an NFL team.

He's insightful, reasonable, and grounded. I like him even if he gets a few things wrong, like everyone does.

Plus, he looks like Josh's chubby and bald (when he takes off the cap which is rare) brother.

  16. Interesting take calling WRs the new running backs. Not sure if you're 100% correct in implying teams don't need a stud number 1 any more but one thing I like with the model of a very good committee vs an elite WR with an average cast: With the elite guy, if he doesn't get his targets, he can sulk, complain, be a distraction.

With 4 good/very good but no great guys, that's a harder act to pull as each guy is less vital on his own and can be more easily replaced.

People point to Green Bay. And KC seems to buy into that but A) they do have one of the best TEs ever (essentially a WR in the short/itermediate zone) and the best QB and possibly best coach in the game. Plus, a D that was very good.

I hope you're right and Beane is right that we don't need a true number 1. Not sure. But we'll know in about 4 months.
