I'm of the opinion that if the NFL requires the Bills to resume this game in Cincy, the Bills will forfeit.  I won't even hazard a guess as to Cincy's reaction as they still do have traumatized players as well.

We are the best and hottest team in the nfl. We beat KC head to head. Why roll over and let the league take advantage of us? we won’t, we deserve 1 seed. The game will be finished.

The Bills are the ones who ultimately chose to not finish the Bengals game. This was the right call, but they cannot be rewarded with the #1 seed without finishing that game, which seems to be an unlikely outcome at this juncture. If anyone gets the short end of the stick here, it's unfortunately going to be them.

    The NFL suspended the game.

I agree... the more I have thought about it and heard more discussion today, I don't think anyone wants this game to be played. Getting the Bills/Bengals back on that same field at any point in the next week or two just isn't going to happen.

As long as Bills are not penalized and they can earn 1 seed after beating the pats is all I care about.  If league figures a way, then finishing the cincy game is not required.

Yet you are trying to decide for them by saying "they have to play the game" and "the team is not going to want to throw that away."  How do you know what the players want to do?  You don't.

I guarantee you they want to play the game. They are not the types to curl up in the fetal position and cry until they hear good news.  They will play for their teammate and they will win the one seed.  Super Bowl goes through Buffalo this year.

The pandemic dramatically sped this process up, because we were all rightly concerned about the mental health of people who were socially isolated, jobless, dealing with home-bound kids, just dealing with having the world turned upside down, or whatever.   But I think this is being driven by social changes that were already in motion before the pandemic.

I'm 50 so that makes me old, and when I say that these social changes are for the worse, people will understandably write that off as "old man yells at clouds."  On the other hand, I'm old enough to have experienced trauma and personal loss.  Everyone my age has done so.  Co-workers die, parents die, friends die, and the expectation has always been that you take a moment to grieve in your own way and then you move on.  This kind of psychological collapse was always reserved for the death of a child or spouse.  I can't wrap my mind around breaking down every time a colleague suffers a grievous injury.  At my age, I don't even have time for all that.  :)

Good post. You in San Diego ?

Problem is that there is a lot of pressure and push back against American culture and to try and turn the country into some sort of extension of the bizarre, overly emotional and completely naive college culture.

Pressure from who? The media and the mentally ill? Our culture hasn’t changed and it never will.

Most people have had traumatic incidents in their lives, you can’t turn the whole world into a safe space.

You can’t just put life on hold indefinitely due to a random and completely unique incident.

If the fans and the players are so distraught and this is just so unbearable then the whole NFL should fold and eliminate any risk whatsoever no matter how minuscule the odds, to save people from ever going through this again.

I may sound insensitive but this is the real world and crappy things happen everyday, we can’t just succumb to being melancholy and scared.

I hope and pray that Damar pulls out of this and makes a complete recovery but stopping games from be played won’t help him recover any sooner or more completely.

This type of behavior must be a byproduct of the pandemic.

Who is saying that?  If we lost to the Bengals (certainly a possibility the way they were throwing on us and considering our injuries),  then losing to the Patriots (or a forfeit) has no impact on our seeding / standing - we are at 3 with a loss to the Bengals, and remain a 3 with a loss to the Patriots.

We are not settling on 3. Our goal in 1 and once we finish and beat the Bengals game and beat NE we will be 1. Potentially Sacrificing a Super Bowl is not the right statement.

Fine, then split the benefits of the 1 seed.  Chiefs get to pick what they want. The Bye or Home Field throughout.

They likely choose the Bye.   We'll take Home Field.

If they penalize the Bills for this tragedy the nfl will lose a ton of fans. I like this idea, only if they can’t resume the game, but they really should.

I also think the player callups will be kept the same.

No Hubbard for the Bengals, Bills not able to elevate Rhodes or Benford after the fact.

Should be interesting. They should just restart the game from the beginning and handle it as a new game with injuries and inactives.  I’m assuming we’ll be hearing what the plan is soon but this game needs to be played, there is no other fair option.

The games are not as important as Hamlin's health but I agree, these games are still important.  Not only for the fans but even more for the players. These players have their lives and careers invested in this as well and a tragedy does not mean its not important anymore. For most fans football is just a game, entertainment. For these players, coaches, people who work at the stadium, etc. it's their livelihood.

This is the patriots game thread…
