  1. I was hoping someone had a similar problem and it could be solved very simply. Calling Adelphia is about as enjoyable as diving into a bed of rusty nails covered with salt. I want to avoid that if possible.

I get sound with live TV, but if I pause live TV and then resume, or if I record a program there is no sound.

Sounds like you got a bad unit. Is there someplace you can drop it off and exchange for a new one as opposed to waiting on the phone, then having some "tech" person ask you dumb questions? I know cablevision (my area) has offices that you can go to for service. But for my DTV they were fast in determining that I had a bad Tivo and quickly shipped out a new one.

  2. I have my DVR set to record various programs - most notably 24 which is tonight. However, for the past few days any prgram that is recorded does not have sound! I have gone through settings to see if one of them got switched or something.

I just can't get sound anymore. Anyone know what to do?

Have you tried calling Adelphi customer service

As a DTV Tivo person, there is no reason that I wouldn't get sound as it records the digital signal and plays back that file. It doesn't do any digital to analog conversion until you playback or watch live. Unless you don't get sound during live tv, then I would suggest looking at the cabling, but doesn't sound like that is the issue. Probably the box went belly up.

  3. Holy Crap

I feel fatter just reading this. Although I will probably end up giving it a taste test.

Thats nothing, there is a deli near one of my old jobs on Long Island that use to make the "Breakfast Barge" On a hero (12" sub) they would pile on 3 eggs, 3 breakfast sausage, 3 strips of bacon, ham and cheese. Much bigger then anything the Fast Foods chains could produce. MMMMmmmmm breakfast barge.....

  4. What kind of storm were you having?  Was it really that bad?

I've never had an outage more than 5-10 minutes, and we get some really bad storms in the midwest (tornados and all).

Check your settings and see what your signal strength is during good weather.  It should be in the high 80s-low 90s on most tansponders (each transponder sends a certain number of channels to you, so you can't just pick one).  Note that some transponders will give you 0 signal because they're a spot-beam.  Don't worry about that.  But the ones you do get should be 80s-90s.

If they're not in that range, call DirecTV, tell them you weren't happy with the outage, and have them send someone to fine-tune your dish (or do it yourself if you want; it's not that hard apparantly, although mine's on the roof and I don't want to go up there).  You can probably get a $25-$50 service credit as well, they're usually good about that.

My signal is pretty strong, low 90's on almost all transponders. I'm in Westchester County, (Northern NYC Suburb) we had snow and wind last night, heavy wet snow. When it first went out it was still daylight and I went to look at the dish and there was no snow on it. This morning there was some snow on the dish, but it was working fine.

  5. Verizon is adding new lines in my neighborhood for their new FIOS internet product.  I currently have comcast cable internet.

Do any of you have Verizon FIOS, which is an upgrade from Verizon Broadband? FIOS is supposedly a new type of broadband.

I'm wondering if I should consider a switch.  I HATE comcast, not for the internet service, but for their monopoly in this area over cable TV.  I would love for nothing better than to find a broadband connection that is as good as comcast cable so that I could use that and get Direct TV, thus dumping Comcast and it's shameful price hikes every year.

    Anyone know?

FIOS is Fiber Optics to the premise. Check out the verizon site regarding it, its a scalable (sp) package and can be much faster then DSL or Cable, but the faster you go, the higher the cost. I do believe that their base services is still faster then Cable. Also FIOS will allow Verizon to deliver video services.

  6. Great work once again AD!!! People are in such glee over the ban that they are just willing to forget little things, like the rights of property owners, etc.

Some day, people will see how symbolic the ban was as a giant step toward the erosion of many other rights that people enjoy, but by then it will be too late.

I don't consider smoking part of the rights that are being taken away. Health issues should remain far removed from freedom of speech, seperation of church and state etc...

  7. I forgot, which law was it that stated you had to go to an establishment that permitted smoking?

No one ever put a gun to my head and said go in this smokey bar and drink here. I'm just saying its nice to go to a place and not have to be subject to that. For the smokers, well sorry but you know I heard somewhere that smoking isn't good for you, maybe its rumor. :)

  8. Of course.  NE does things like ban smoking in bars, make it very difficult for people to keep and bear arms, etc.  But it's fun to pretend that they're "progressive."

As a non smoker, I appreciate those laws. Its nice to go out and not stink like an ashtray when you come home.

  9. Yet another update:

After waiting for 1 hour on hold with Vonage, I finally got through to a technican who was quite helpful. He instructed me to switch my code to ,#019 as the 34 is for stand alone tivo units, not the Directv version. I also asked him if he could look into slowing down the packet information from my line as per some very useful advise by Fezmid <_<. After I got off the phone I did a test call and a daily call and all went well on the first attempt. Thanks Fez for that heads up.

  10. Hate to post one of those friend of a friend story but this is what I was told:

My very good friend Tom has a cousin, Paul, he was going to Tulane for his Masters in Physical Therapy. Was involved with the football team and said that JP wasn't a "bright kid" but if he learns the playbook he'll be fine.

I'll try to get more info when he has a chat with his cousin.

    My 2 cents.

  11. Just because you have a signal of 0 on a transponder doesn't mean there's a problem -- not all transponders send out signals to all locations (ie: some are spot beams so you can't "see" them).

That said, your signal strengths are really low.

If you don't want to wipe snow off the dish, what some people do is fill a Super Soaker squirt gun with the blue windshield wiper solution (the stuff that doesn't freeze in winter).  They then spray that up on the dish to melt the snow so they don't have to go up on the roof.

But again, I think once your dish is properly aligned that you should be fine.

Damn, thats a Pro Cable commericial if I ever saw one. A guy in his fuzzy slippers and bathrobe with his kids super soaker gun shooting at a 18" target 25 feet away in the freezing cold weather.... :D:)

I prefer to dismember a live lobster and fry him up in some garlic and olive oil. Then add two cans of San Marzano tomatoes from my hometown of Napoli. Cook everything down add some salt, fresh parsley. We southerners are not big on spicey foods. But you can easily make this Fra Diavalo by add some hot red paper flakes in it. Pour sauce over linguine and enjoy one my favorite dishes. BTW when its halfed and frying its still moving in the pan. :D

  13. Here is an update. After reading through countless pages on Vonage and Tivo in the forum, there was one solution that was somewhat helpful. I was able to switch phone numbers and have my tivo call into a NYC based number. It had more success but still had some dropped calls. Its a step closer then I was yesterday. The programing that I did on the Tivo dial option was to put in a ",#034" and *99 Let see what happens in the next 24 hours. At least I can now record shows.

Question: Why does Tivo need to call in for? I understand the PPV side for Directv, but doesn't the program guide get downloaded off the sat?
