  1. Honestly Allen has to be getting highly effected by Diggs I believe a lot of his INTs last year were from either forcing it to Diggs or DBs knowing it was 100% going to Diggs after the scramble, also I feel like that started causing Allen to not even go Diggs way until late into games as the season went on. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Each year it seems that a player or 2 that few, if any, had on their radar outperforms all expectations. Who will be 2023's big surprise(s)?

I'm going with Alex Austin. He slid primarily due to a slow 40 time, but if moved inside he could be pretty good. It may take some time for him to adjust though.
I also think the future is bright for Dorian Williams, but not so soon. He has some outstanding traits, but needs coaching and experience to put it all together. I love his speed in particular. In the mean time, I expect his ST contributions to be noteworthy.
Justin Shorter is another intriguing prospect after his college career was marred by a rash of injuries. If healthy, he might finally live up to expectations. I know from watching draft room video that Beane really liked him a lot. We'll see if that admiration was warranted.
I'd end by saying that the success of our top 2 picks will not surprise me at all. I think the sky is the limit for Kincaid and Torrence.

Defense: Elam and Groot.  I'm convinced something happened behind the scenes with Elam LY, causing him to be in the doghouse.  But he's going to become a star CB this season.  Groot goes off for 12 sacks, with improved playcalling and secondary play.

Offense: Cook and Davis.  Both go over 1k yards, led by improved OL play and Dorsey having all his doubters now fret him leaving for a HC role.

I agree with you I think Elam is going to be legit I also think if Groot adds alittle more muscle he will be nasty especially with the tutelage of Von Miller. I believe OP asked who would surprise us as a new addition though unless I misread

Here’s my simple take: If the Bills add Hopkins to Diggs, Davis and Knox/Kincaid they’ll have officially entered the Embarrassment of Riches category. If they can’t get to a Super Bowl with Allen and that WR/TE group then it simply can’t be done.

Let me rephrase this for you, can’t be done under McBeane

Kincaid is not getting TE1 snaps over Knox. I'm lmao at this.

Lay off the Davis has to go threads- come back player of the year this season

He isn’t going to be taking TE1 snaps over Knox cause he’s going to be in the slot, otherwise don’t laugh Knox might drop his way down the list

Diggs being absent from OTAs is no big deal.

His behaviour at the end of the divisional round was unacceptable but that is for McD and Beane to deal with.

But if anything Diggs should be harder on Josh whatever he was trying to do to light a fire up his ass vs the Bengals failed as Josh zombie stared into middle distance.

I agree with you that if it was just him missing OTA’s but with the way he acted at the end of the year and throughout the offseason for him to not show face and show his teammates he is in it to win it this year is not a good look. And Allen needs to take control

Anyways, to quickly set the scene for you just a bit, stopped for gas while I was out running some errands and have one of my many Bills shirts etc, and have a smaller 3-4in tattoo of Bills charging buffalo on the back of my neck people notice sometimes that often is the first thing they comment on getting my attention starting a little football talk....

Told him I was a loyal die hard Bills fan for almost 40 years now and he was a die hard fan of the Packers for however many years, but at some point is now a die hard Raiders fan lol

So how can one be a "loyal die hard" fan when you switch teams like that? I could never do it, I can't imagine myself being a fan of any other team besides Buffalo.

Yeah honestly, people who tell me they’ve switched fan bases throughout their life I can’t trust they have no loyalty I usually walk away 🤷🏻‍♂️

Any rational person would take a proven playmaker to help a young, promising QB get to the next level over the fifth WR selected in that draft. Your 20/20 hindsight is so keen, but you’d have more credibility if you can link us to all your posts pounding the table for Jefferson before that draft and criticizing the trade immediately afterward.

I agree the Diggs trade was a good acquisition. You don’t know what you get when you’re taking a new unproven player this is far from Beanes biggest faults

I thought we did this already though OP like 8 times at the end of the season. I figured we needed to move forward since he’s not going anywhere this year. We gotta focus on the good now we don’t have a choice

    Gotta be Cody Ford

Wyatt Teller became the savage he was showing his potential as and we let him go become a pro bowler somewhere else. Oh and Isaiah Hodgins another competitor we knew was ready and let someone else take as well. Both would have solidified weaknesses on the Bills roster years ago and allowed for new pieces

In your opinion, what is Beane's biggest blunder either draft, free agency or trade? Something that has prevented the Bills from winning it all or putting them in what looks like a downward trajectory in terms of post season finishes since the AFC Championship game appearance in 2020?

For me it is using three day two picks on RB over four consecutive drafts from 2019 to 2022.

I think Singletary was a solid pick. Other than a case of the fumbles more than you would like he really produced AND he could do it all. A three down back. But using day two picks in 2020 and 2022 meant the Bills neglected the o-line.

This past draft should have been the draft to use another day two pick on a RB, after Singletary's rookie contract expired.

Wyatt Teller. Would have gave us another solid lineman who set a nasty mean standard for everyone else.

  9. Realistically how could we afford Hopkins?

I may be in the minority but I think Davis is going to have a very good year as long as he’s healthy. He seems to be dismissed as an after thought.

I still think we should make a go for Hopkins but Davis is being very underrated on here in my opinion

I believe so are Deonty Harty and Shakir as well.

When the team is doing well and/or exceeding general expectations, as it has done the past few years, minus, probably, last season, this question is kind of moot.

But if and when the team is not meeting expectations or things get complicated, is there anyone in Pegula's circle of friends or trusted business associates (at arm's length from Bills operations) who he can turn to for advice and counsel on questions related to extensions, evaluations, or possible firings?

I'm not trying to be negative; I hope McBean lead us to multiple championships... but if things don't go as well as we hope — and with an elite QB things should mean serious contention for a Super Bowl — is Terry on his own or who advises him?

Pegula seems, obviously, like a sharp businessman, but he doesn't strike me as a football expert. Maybe I'm wrong but I expect him to turn to someone if and when he needs to make tough decisions.

Seems as if they’ve been asking McBeane about their place in the organization, let’s see after this year what happens.

    edit:

Broeker either PS, or in Boettger's spot if Beane pull's off a trade.

I dont know enough about UDFA OT Richard Gouraige yet. He might be able to replace Doyle at backup RT, and Doyle moves to backup LT. He might make the PS. He might just be camp fodder.

That right side could be REAL NASTY if those dudes get their stuff together and develop.

Or does Bates or Edwards have a chance of starting over Torrence, and McGovern plays RG?

furthermore, it sounds like (from the other thread about UDFA) that that 6'6" receiver who we got as UDFA on a 3 year deal is the new special teams gunner.

dont see where Shorter will fit.

He's only a 5th round draft pick.  Who as was mentioned upthread, is "a big receiver who is not good at football."

Perhaps I can dilute it by saying "Shorter will not see the field" but that's only if McBeane wanna try to salvage value by telling themselves he will get better,  so they keep him as a perpetual game-day inactive player.

But it wont take 4 years, like it did for Edmunds.

So I think Beane has a plan for Shorter. Get him game ready, never let him see the field, shove him down the PS long after we know he is ready and then allow another team to grab him and then Beane will know he made the correct pick.

I think the fact that they aren't exactly planning on him being used as your typical TE and more as a receiving weapon in the mold of Beasley might make this less relevant for him.

I agree I see them using him more as a lot receiver and have him line up anywhere. His frames not even that big for a TE honestly

He’s a reach. Has a history though of dropping balls. Time will tell.

You are joking right? Or are you just assuming because he went in the 5th he just dropped what came his way? Cause Shorter potentially could be a steal, 2018 highest recruited high school WR and I believe he had 1 drop in the last 100 plus targets. If anything his body doesn’t make him a crisp route runner within the first 15 yards but he is suppose to be a monster. And Diggs will have his routes crisper by season starts

Sure, but if the team gets offensive or defensive contributions from their primary special teams contributors, they would literally be the only team in the NFL where that is the case. Every single team had at least 3 players (most with 5 to 7) who contributed almost nothing to offense and defense. If the Bills managed that, they would be in a class of their own.

And it would mean that the offense and defense would be worse, because your bottom of the roster guys are worse players. You don't want those guys to play. You want your starters to play.

But ours do see the field n they are all draft picks who can’t hack it beane should have a few of them lying around already

  17. 14 hours ago, MJS said:

I see this thrown around a lot about the Bills, that they pay their special teamers the most in the league, and especially that they roster too many primary special teams players. They claim that other teams only roster 2 or 3, while the BIlls roster 4 or 5. So, I ran the numbers, because I really didn't know if that was true.

For this exercise, I looked at snap percentages for each team. I considered a primary special teamer as a player who played approximately 30% or more of the total special teams snaps for the team and who had less than 15% total snaps for either offense or defense. I also removed Kickers, Punters, and Long Snappers, because every team needs those specialists and their roster spots are guaranteed. I then recorded the 2022 cap hit for each of those players (from overthecap.com) to see how teams compared in both the number of primary special teamers and the cap hits associated with them. Here are the results for the Bills:

    image.thumb.png.177bfe85f50f846a6b59a76cf91823e3.png

    For the league:

    image.thumb.png.78fc27d1e433e5ea2b79c976d0b6b4cf.png

    Findings:

    - There were 16 teams who rostered more primary special teams players than the Bills. This includes good teams like the Bengals, Cowboys, 49ers, Eagles, and Chargers, plus our divisional opponents in the Jets and Dolphins. The average was 5.5 players, so the Bills were just below average in the number of these types of players rostered (Myth Busted!)

    - Five teams spend more than the Bills in total for these players: Steelers, Texans, Jaguars, Bengals, and Vikings.

    - The Bills ranked 3rd in the cap hit per player for these primary special teams players at $1.68 million. The Steelers and Texans pay more per player. (Myth Kinda Busted. They pay their teamers well, just not the most in the league)

Here are the top cap hits in the league for primary special teamers in 2022. The Bills had 2 in the top 15. The Taxans and Steelers also had multiple:

    image.thumb.png.b372af12f27a65d7112d9a434f3d8262.png

In conclusion: the Bills do not roster too many primary special teams players. In fact, many teams roster more. The Bills are on the lower end. But, the Bills DO pay their special teamers well, with two teamers in the top 15 of the league (in 2022, at least). And the results can be seen in the Bills fielding one of the best, or the best, special teams units in the league. Joe Marino from Locked on Bills did an analysis awhile back looking at super bowl winning teams and found that most of them had good special teams units. There were a few outliers, but having a top 5 special teams unit is one of those marks of a good team, and even a super bowl contender.

I’d rather have a hungry rookie trying to earn a spot on special teams who can fill in on defense cause Neal cam Lewis and Tyler add no value are special teams alone isn’t great and the time they see on defense hurts this team

I hate with all the injuries how much time he sees the field on defense that they are okay with not getting better here. Kind of just same old bull####

3 hours ago, Niagara Dude said:

This is why Beane will always be looking up chasing the Chiefs,  it's these kinds of stupid signings that do not improve the team. Even far worse was resigning Tyler Matakevich,   we waste 2 million in cap space for a 31 year old high motor/no talent special teams guy that will never play a down of regular defence.  Does anyone remember any amazing special teams play this guy has made in 3 previous years.  Only money you spend on special teams is for your kicker/punter and long snapper. Stunning that Tyler will be making more money than our punter/kicker and long snapper along with having a 2.5 dead money count against the cap should the Bills decide to cut him. Do the Bills already know that some undrafted rookie will not outshine him in camp? How about signing some younger guy with better athletic talent that has potential to give you some plays on defence.

Maybe go check out the Chiefs cap sheet and see how many impactful players will be making less than the great Matekevich , you can start with Isaih Pacheco at half that amount or Toney at the same amount. Matakevich resigning has Sean's hands written all over it,  the undersized high motor/high character guy who takes up a roster spot every Sunday. With all the injuries we had last season,  you would think they would want more positional depth. As for Lewis,  the two plays I would prefer to forget was costing us the Vikings game which would have won us home field and maybe we would be playing Jaguars and not Cincy who the Bills do not match up well against.

Either way these are both two stupid signings,  I would rather have 2 younger undrafted free agents with better athletic talent then these two.

Lol was he a wrestler and a church man? Cam Lewis saw the field too much on defense for this to be okay as well. I’d have been happy letting em all go and keeping edmunds. His best years are ahead.

this next chapter is going to be “Josh, you have a ton of money so need to carry the team”

We weren’t the #1 defense ever when it mattered at the end and Josh has been carrying the team. Are you watching games or reading the stat sheets?

    11 minutes ago, SCBills said:

    Statistically?  Nope.  Also don’t care.

Looking forward to Beane, hopefully using that earmarked Edmunds money to help Josh Allen.

Also hoping we trade Oliver to better allocate his 10M.

That still leaves enough talent to be a middle of the pack Defense (assuming McDermott earns his keep as a Defensive HC) and then when Von gets back in the swing of things, we have our big playmaker in the post season.

I think losing edmunds is gonna hurt because we are going to miss his best years and it’s gonna be what coulda been. But I believe this defense needs a scheme change they were easily picked apart by a superior coach time and again.
