It would've not only cost us this years draft, but also next years to go and get one of the big three at WR

The correct play was to then shift to reloading the roster and use the cap space and even better draft capital next season to go and get that big time player that can be a game changer.

Anyone who thinks we should have sold the farm for one of the top three would be groaning when the team has no young talent or depth once they falter yet again in the playoffs. We had a top WR and it didn't get us anything but playoff disappointment. You need a complete team with depth along with some playmakers to truly contend.

I think the plan is to retool this season, and then go all in in 2025 again with a big time addition on offense and defense. With a hopefully strong draft class this season, we will be in a prime spot to challenge again with another superbowl window wide open.

This is obviously a rebuild and reset year. I’m not saying we should have swung for the fences, but did we add the right prospects to have the strongest chance at top-shelf production? That remains to be seen.

This was a very McBeane draft, and to this point they’ve been great at adding JAG starters and tier 2 or tier 3 guys. Really the only truly elite player they’ve drafted is Allen. (It’s debatable but Tre might have been that guy too, if injuries didn’t derail his trajectory).

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll probably get what you’ve always got. I like this draft myself - in theory.

But I’ve liked a lot of McBeane drafts in theory and ended up very underwhelmed with the results. 🤷‍♂️

  2. Not for nothing, but just about every draft pick in history was “promising” at one point in time, lol. Can’t say this lot is any more or less so in that regard, but I’ll give you that he definitely spread the love to multiple positions of need.

I get all that.  And I now understand the Coleman pick.  My problem with the Coleman pick is that the Bills biggest flaw on offense, besides separation is that they have been unable to replace John Brown.  A high double shell buster would open up everything underneath and the middle.

“Game-breaking speed is overrated”, that’s what gran-papi used to say and he was a fella who knew about these things!

When the Bills decided to go young and start a roster reset, I had hope that Beane was gonna try to do things differently, since the old way he was doing things didn't get the Bills over the hump. They've been hitting too man singles and doubles over the years and not enough home runs. Instead, he appears to be doing things exactly the same way this time around.

They don’t call it a “process” for nothing.

Only question is whether you still trust it at this point… But love em or hate em, McBeane sure do stick to it.

I don’t think any of them, unfortunately. We missed our window.

We have to get lucky. But even still, I’ll roll on a 10% chance for a star in a Franklin over a 50% chance for a star in Cooper.

I mean that’s just cutting off your nose to spite your face.

This team needs top shelf talent, man. We need all pro level players that are t Josh Allen. I’ll take it at any position, even punter (tho not at this draft pick, obviously lol)

You could put a prime Ronnie Lott on the Bills and he would make less difference than a solid #2 WR. Remember, we not only lost Diggs. We also lost Gabe Davis. Beane created a huge hole and now he has to fill it.

I agree, but the draft isn’t over after pick 33.

If we take Dejean here and still get someone like Franklin later in the second, thats the better combination of value based on what’s left, you have to agree with that. If we’ve waited until now, we can still add a player soon-ish.

We already missed out on the top end prospects. No undoing that. Now we make the best of what’s left.

“Realistically has a chance” or “likely?”

I’ll be completely honest man. I’m at the point where I’d take a “realistically has a chance to be a top 10 WR” over “likely one of the best safeties in football.” That’s how much the value difference is.

We did the all-Pro DB room thing already.

Id take a realistic chance at a top 10 wide receiver too. Personally I would have loved to leap frog Jax for BTJ, but well here we are.

Which of the remaining prospects is more likely to be a stud receiver than Dejean is to be a stud DB? And I’m not trying to be snarky, I’m honestly curious who you value at that level?

  8. 1 minute ago, FireChans said:

WR’s make more difference than safeties. The 10th best WR in football makes more of a difference than the 2nd best safety.

Haha, but even if that’s true.. Dejean seems like he realistically has a chance to be the 2nd best safety in football. Especially in this defense.

Which of the remaining wide receivers seems likely to be a top 10 WR?

People have not gone crazy.  It's obvious.

We have Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir and Mack Hollins.  That's really it.

Even with all the defensive injuries last year, we beat KC in the playoffs if we weren't down to a checked-out Diggs and Trent Sherfield as our two weapons spazzing out all game while Shakir was the only one doing anything.

WR matters so, sooo much more than a starting Safety or some rotational DL.

Nobody has gone crazy.  We've seen this team neglect WR year in/year out, and we've now seen it bite us when it matters most two years in a row.

It’s crazy if you would rather the team reach for a suboptimal prospect instead of taking one with much higher potential to make a difference.

Beane’s miscalculations at WR up to now is not a good reason to want to see him make another potential error.

I mean if you’ve got a strong and high opinion on the remaining WR prospects, I get it. And that’s fine.

But if I’m looking at it pragmatically, I’m not picking WR at 33 just to do it. We’re obviously going to add bodies to this position in this draft, but I’ve got no problem if they wait until 60 or move up from 60 to do it. It’s same difference to me.

This makes a lot of sense. Hard to see them going WR at 33 but hope I'm wrong.

Trade down also seems very likely.

I feel like people have gone a little crazy all off-season honing in on WR. Yes that’s an obvious needs, but we need a lot of help at several positions, including DB.

Just take the best player. We need top shelf players more than anything else. If Dejean can perform at an elite level in the McD system, I’d take that over the 7th or 8th best WR prospect.

Then let KC trade Mahomes for that hypothetical trade package.

Scary thing is that if any team could recover from that level of stupidity, KC is probably the one team that could. Andy Reid has always maximized the talents of his QB's, and with that many picks they'd find him someone who could execute his offense with at least a Donovan McNabb/ Alex Smith type of production.

  12. Drafting is a crap-shoot because of the human element. There's maybe an infinite number of intangible variables that will go into how a selected player interacts with his coaches, teammates, scheme -- and of course his off-field environment.

It's not like Madden where the highest score is automatically the best score, and there's largely no reason not to use the highest rated players.

All the sports science/ psychology in the world will never be able to perfectly predict how a prospect pans out. And if it eventually can, it will mean that AI has figured us out and we have far bigger things to worry about than football. 😅

Justin Herbert gonna plant himself in the draft room at the start of RD1 and stare daggers at the GM until he takes a WR with their pick.

That is a dismal offense on paper but with Roman as OC you know it’s going to be a run first, run heavy offense.

But Herbert might be the best passer a Roman/Harbaugh tandem has ever had to work with. Might not need top shelf receivers to make an offense work, and any RB will probably thrive there.

Loved what he brought as a backup running back.   Didnt love the job he did as a returner.   Hoping they have other plans there.

This team was so scattershot at returner last year, seemed like they were just doing whatever. Didn't Fournette field kicks at one point? Lol

Just get rid of comp picks.  If NFL can’t even correctly compute their own formulas, it’s beyond time to eliminate it.  Same with the minority coach comp picks.  It’s a noble intention but find a better way to incentivize it or penalize a lack of diversity.

I mean a third round pick is just ridiculous.

You want to throw someone a 7th for diversity hires be my guest. But a day two pick cuz someone hired out of your staff had the right skin color? Give me a break…

I think it's more out of necessity than by design tbh

like all things being equal I'm sure the Niners would like to have a great QB, they've just been making do w out like 90% of the rest of the league...the difference is they're still contending for championships. That's why I give them so much credit

It's true that Shanahan deserves a lot of credit for that, I certainly can't imagine many coaches (ours included) taking Brock Purdy or Jimmy G anywhere near a super bowl. Of course when it came down to it, he seemed to put a bit too much confidence in those QB's, so you probably have to deduct a few points for that.

But I also think it should go without saying the 9'ers are benefiting from not having a truly elite QB in the NFC right now.

  17. It's an interesting case study, that relationship.

They used to say how Belichick would start every team meeting for the new week by highlighting every play Tom Brady f'ed up the last game, no matter win or lose or how well he played. That obviously fed into Brady's motivation but it also fed into his resentment.

But obviously those results aren't typical. Unlocking the intangible x factor that made it work for them would probably be an impossible task.
