Over on another thread, I shamelessly shilled for a post I did on the results of QB drafts, where I used completion percentage, YPA, and TD/INT ratio as the metrics.

There's a reason for choosing those three metrics - you have a point about completion percentage by itself, but if it goes with high YPA (and high YPC), you know that can't be the explanation.  Now, you have a point that YPA includes YAC, but to no one's surprise, there's a stat for that too.  It's called "Air yards" and is available as an NFL next gen stat.

This year, Tyrod's YPA were 6.7 and YPC 10.6.  His air yards were 6.2.  That means on average, someone picks up 0.5 yards per attempt after the catch for Taylor.

In other words, you are fooling yourself if you think a lot of those passes are Shady picking up chunks after the touch - in fact, it's a legit beef on Tyrod that he doesn't necessarily put the ball in a spot that enables good YAC.  And let's be honest, if you watch coach's film, you can see that Tyrod does, in fact, throw the ball when guys are not sitting in his route staring.

Again, one reason we see people appearing to argue for Taylor is just this sort of over-the-top nonsense which is not borne out by facts, including the very nice touch of trying to persuade by appeals to emotion "you're fooling yourself" and "let's be honest" in trying to persuade people to agree notwithstanding evidence to the contrary.

Do I want the Bills to upgrade from Taylor yes, yes I do.  Until you're starting Brees or Rodgers, always try to upgrade.  But let's not have silly stuff about how completion percentage and lack of INTs are meaningless. or valueless.

    PFF planet apparently :)

(edit for those who don't know, I don't fancy PFF)

can we please not reprise 2013?

    Mind blown by PFF

Well he is the all time leading Bills passer for completion percentage, so that says something about accuracy (and about previous Bills QBs).  Now throws not attempted is another theoretical stat altogether.

Generally, I wish everyone would stop being so polorized regarding Taylor.  He is a slightly above average starter, and has had a good cap number the past couple years. He isn’t a top 10 QB in the league.  It’s pretty straight forward.  People treat it like the Devine mystery or something where you have crusaders and atheists both willing to die for their beliefs.

On what planet is TT anywhere near above average?

  3. I say let anyone else have him rather than the Bills. Its kind of weird when the team that drafted him lets him walk only to give Alex Smith $71 Million Guaranteed. Plus the guy has been less than stellar while with the Skins, not really doing much of anything there. Smith is four years older and making similar money, sounds fishy enough to stay away from Cousins.

Unkess we can trade him behind the scenes ala Smith.

Here's why I think this is the case.

    1.  Cousins is not coming here.  He will end up in Denver or NYC.

    2.  Cost to trade up will be too high.  Especially if they aren't sold that one of these guys are the next elite AN.

    3.  We have more holes than qb.  If we trade up we would put a rookie out there with a ****ty team and we know how that turns out.

    4.  Bradford and Bridgewater are NOT upgrades.  Before wasting money on them we have to ask.  Are they really better.

Draft well...sign some people to plug holes and this team will make playoffs again and have more money and options next year for draft.  That's my take...

Bradford and Bridgewater are most certainly upgrades if they can stay healthy. Tyrod is not good, period, and if he's not replaced then the "process" cannot and will not progress. TT hurts this team more than he helps, and that was evident against Jax. Any average QB who can make throws beats the Jags in that game and we all know it, its not debatable. I would prefer any of the Viking QBs or a rook over another year with a QB that cant throw to wide open receivers.

  5. So the two year extension for a nine year starting center was a bad decision, but not until he sustained a career ending neck injury? Some of these people kill me, always looking for something or someone to complain about. If EW wasn't resigned, these same people would be complaining about the Bills being too cheap and how we let that guy walk away. Maybe they should have built in some injury clause or protection for themselves, but lets all be realistic here.

I agree with this.  I think Murph gets sensitive too much when he doesn't agree with a caller or a statement made by Jones.

He says "really" a little smug each time.  He's just good at keeping most of his composure but you can tell he's irritated with that statement.

Absolutely, it's like if people don't agree with JM or question anything the Bills do he gets all over the caller. It's almost as if he can stand anyone else having their own opinion and it drives me crazy. He's very condescending

I think our thinking runs along similar lines.
I willing to guess. Creating plays for gameday all day with Taylor is no small challenge !

just wondering why it is clear that Bills do not.

I have no idea either way about how they think on this. What has you sure they do not want want Taylor back next year .
They could draft one and sincerely use him as  the bridge QB after all.

I think it's clear since they benched TT in favor of Peterman in the middle of a playoff push. If NP didn't implode, TT never sees the field again in a Bills uniform IMO. The play calling has been very conservative because TT just cant get his WRs the ball
