I mean, when you title a thread with a claim that Bill Polian (and you spell his name wrong, no less) was at the bottom of the barrel in modern day Buffalo GM duties... your poor judgement is going to be called out. He built the Super Bowl teams with the Bills and won a Super Bowl doing the same in Indy.

since meaning before . not current.  clearly the polian era was first rate

I miss the good old days when I could point out, factually and accurately and without the mods getting upset, that someone who posts something this idiotic is a mentally deranged little turd.  Instead, I'm required to be nice, and tell you "Good point, keep up the good work!"  But I don't actually have to mean it, and it's entirely possible I'm thinking "Geez, what a mentally deranged little turd" while I type it.

So...Good point, keep up the good work!

Did they plan on being this bad after 2 games?  Of course not.  They signed a couple of D FAs they wanted and spent what little they had left

on "band aids".  Most of the "band Aids" are not working out.

Drafting a QB who it is fairly obvious they wanted to sit for a while.  That plan "failed" with AJM playing so bad.

Passing on Mahomes.   This has been talked to death.  McDermott knew that Whaley was on the way out and that he and the new GM had to make

the young drafted QB "their guy".  He had to wait until this year (which was projected to be one of the best for QBs in a long time).

You are right about the D being much worse than they expected.  The beginning of this year has started out bad.  Very bad.

I for one have come to terms with the 1st 4 games being a mess and said so during the preseason.

This season is going to have to be scored in 3 separate groups.

    1st 4 games.  No wins.

Games 5-10 up to the Bye week.  I expect them to get something going and win 2-3.

Games 11-16 after the Bye.  Once again 2-3 wins.

That's about 5-6 wins this year.  If McDermott get's them playing together and Josh Allen can improve maybe 1 or 2 more.

That would be a successful rebuilding year.

I would recommend waiting at least until game 12 before trashing everything Beane and McDermott.

5-6 wins will be a job well done .  I simply don't see it

putting together a 2-14 doesn't put you in the running for the worst group .   For all those point to Marv and Jauron they won 7 games thier first three years

These posts are incredibly stupid. There have been suspect free agency aqcuisitions, but this regime has

1.) Went for and got a legit elite QB prospect (of course opinions vary on this, but many scouts touted him as having the highest ceiling in the draft), which most of the fanbase has been begging for over the last 20 years

2.) Made it to the playoffs for the first time in 18 years.

It is also notable that they have drafted what looks to be a great young CB, DT, and LB. It is too early to know what we have in Phillips and Edmunds, but they both look like they have a lot of potential.

Honestly, I question how long you have been a Bills fan. You should know about the cap situation and the shedding of the Whaley's suspect picks and factor this into the current state of the team. I haven't agreed with everything they've done, and yes the product on the field has looked abysmal for much of the first two games, but have a little perspective before posting such hyperbolic nonsense

they could have drafted a qb with thier original pick in 2017. Instead they wait a year and spent a ton of capable to get a qb.  Dismissing what will be at best a 4-12 year is folly .  Spending their limited funds on defense instead of helping out thier young qb is very questionable.

Beane came here and started jettisoning overpaid and prima donna players.  As much as he could, he put the dead cap money into 2018 with the clear intention of making this a rebuilding year.  I certainly don't agree with every decision but you can easily see the logic at work.  He's collecting draft capital and building up free cap space to make 2019 and 2020 good years.  If Beane does a credible job executing his plan, we'll be back in the playoffs in 2020.

McD is James Bowie being outnumbered 15-1 at the Battle of the Alamo.  He's capable enough and his guys have good esprit d'corps.  But they're outgunned and have no realistic chance.  The Vikes, for example, are spending nearly 50% more on their roster this year than the Bills are ($183,000,000 vs. 125,000,000).   The best leaders and tacticians in the world can't overcome those numbers.

you can call them overpaid and prima donna but they had talent.  This team has a sevre lack of taent.

Wait are you saying Polian was the worst before these guys?

Mahomes was far from a sure thing too.

I have faith in McBeane, there is a plan in motion. We expected to have this kind of season last year, I don’t understand why everyone is losing their minds. They ended the playoff drought, got that monkey off our backs and now are bottoming out so we can return to the top of the league. This year will hurt but it will all be worth it soon.

lets flip the question.  looking at their personal moves thus far .  are you confident they will be able to turn it around ?

  6. 2 minutes ago, K-9 said:

The hard work on the roster couldn't be accomplished this year. One look at the QB situation and the surrounding offensive personnel should have clued everyone in on where this season was going.

The big surprise is the defensive performance so far. We all expected more in that department.

which is one of the reason i am doubt these guys. They invest a lot over two years in the d.  They are not getting great results.

Do you know why we can't have nice things in buffalo?  Because of us - the fans.  I feel bad for McD and Josh.

Had Peyton manning started year one as a bill his career would have begun and ended much like N8 Peterman's I suspect.

I use to feel had for Whaley .  It turned out i was wrong but he never put out a product this bad

There will be pockets of informed, intelligent discussion among those who understood what this season was going to be all along. Come and find us.

that is a hand in the sand approach .  They did spend money heading into the season.  They thought they could put up a good d and win some games.  No body would ever want to field a team this poor.  The fact that they spent on d instead of helping the young qb is another blunder

The plan was to draft a QB and let him develop, clear space on the cap, and look to the future.

This year never mattered.  Whether we were bad, average, or somewhere in the middle.  It never mattered.

I am sure that is a tough pill to swallow, but you gotta just accept it.

While I agree with you.  Nothing they have done gives me confidence that they will do the right thing going forward.  Plus if the idea that this year didn;t matter then why spend 25 million of limited Defensive players and leave your new qb devoid of help ?

So, in you view it makes perfect sense to allow the GM that was getting terminated the day after the draft to pick the QB on his way out the door?

You can claim whispers of "it was McDermott running the draft" but unless you can supply anything to support that then you or I really have no idea who made the picks. Oh, and fwiw Doug Whaley took full ownership of making the KC trade. Look up what he calls his "parting gift" to the Bills.

yes Mcdermott has a said he spoke to Reid several times in the week leading up to the draft.

So you are saying that Beane was "secretly" calling the shots for the Bills when he was with the Carolina Panthers during last years draft? Did he quietly phone McDermott and Whaley and tell them he thought he might be the next GM of the Bills so pass on Mahomes? Comical.

How can anybody be this upset in the middle of a PLANNED rebuild???

was the plan to be this bad? was the plan to draft a young qb and give him next to nothing to play with ?  was the plan to pass on a good qb in order to pay more to take a chance on one following year.   These are not good plans

those that think they're great are being premature and those that think they're the worst, are being premature.

it's going to take more time, whether you like what is being done or not, time will tell whether this regime succeeds or in the case of all of those in the past 20 + years, fail.

so, want to make your claim now, then hey, they failed.

(of course they failed to you because they didn't pick your boy in the chiefs uniform)

myself, I'll give it some time and have accepted that this has been a tear down and this season may be and has been so far pretty rough but I have to see what they do this next off season and draft before I start feeling like the sky is falling.

    bills_logo.jpg

    Buffalo Bills
Draft picks: Tre'Davious White (No. 27 overall), Zay Jones (No. 37 overall), Dion Dawkins(No. 63 overall), Matt Milano (No. 163 overall), Nathan Peterman (No. 171 overall), Tanner Vallejo (No. 195 overall)
    Day 1 grade: A
    Day 2 grade: A
    Day 3 grade: A
    Overall grade: A
The skinny: Instead of taking Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback of the future, they moved down 17 spots in the first round, allowing Kansas City to make the pick. They received a third-round pick this year and a future first-rounder for the move down. Buffalo selected a good corner in White with the 27th pick to take over for Stephon Gilmore, meeting a dire need. Well done. Buffalo certainly required help at the receiver position, and Zay Jones was the best value at the spot. In fact, they thought enough of Jones to swap a third- for a fifth-round pick in the process.

They found excellent value in guard/tackle Dion Dawkins, who deserved to be picked higher. The Billsfound an excellent quarterback in round five, as Nathan Peterman should have gone a round or two earlier. Sixth-round pick Tanner Vallejo is a special teams ace and will find his way on the field on defense.

    ************************************************************************

Per the "expert" draftniks getting paid to voice an opinion in 2017, the McD Bills had a solid draft with all information known/available to them at that time, and plugged gaping holes spread throughout their roster. As other posters have rightly pointed out, still way too early to draw any real conclusions about either Mahomes (one hit wonder?) or Allen (JK boom or accuracy bust?), so why don't we come back to this sometime in 2019?

Sadly results didn't turn out as well as the writer of the article thought.  Vallejo is he still on the team.  Peterman is useless, Zay may end up being a fine number 3 receiver we will see.
