This year’s Bills team finished 9-7, but based on Football Outsiders’ estimated wins and Pythagorean wins metrics,1 it only earned 6.8 and 6.3 wins, respectively. Put another way, an NFL team that gets outscored by 57 points on the year (as the Bills did) mathematically ought to win about six or seven games.
But it’s not just about wins. Pick a metric of team strength, and the Bills are typically at or below the median: 21st in scoring differential, 15th in FiveThirtyEight’s Elo ratings, 23rd in Simple Rating System,2 21st in Defense-adjusted Value Over Average.3
These Bills don’t stack up well against the 17 iterations that came before them, either:
Is their a metric for HEART, MOTIVATION and GREAT COACHING???

I love it. More validation for what McDermott is doing here in Buffalo, and the fact that he really has changed the culture at One Bills Drive. Also the fact that players are not only buying in, but that they enjoy playing for him. I'm truly excited about this upcoming season, and to see what he and Beane do in the draft with so much draft capital. I may be in the minority, but I really hope that they DON'T reach for one of the QB's coming out, or give up the farm, seeing as though we have several key holes to fill, and have the stockpile of picks to address many of our needs. With first round picks probably in the 20s, I feel like we would have to give up WAY too much to move up, especially with so many teams needing a QB. My dream would be to have Mayfield fall to us, but that's becoming more and more doubtful.
I feel the way you do! Let the GM & HC do what they feel is best and I bet they won't 'reach' for a QB in the draft!!! It's exciting!!!

Great Post! I went to my first Bills in 1960 with my Dad and was "hooked" every since. These past 17 years seem like a mirage. When you went through living the 4 seasons of Super Bowls day in and day out it left you exhausted - ready for a break from it all. But really, a 17 year drought!!

I'm a MUCH older fan than you and was feeling the same emotions. If there was ever a good time to get a hang over it was today! And - yes - we deserved this!

I just gotta say that the Kyle Williams TD run may very well be the greatest play in Buffalo Bills history!
I only noticed his jersey number right as the ball was handed off to him. Just perfect.
It was the first time I've ever actually gotten emotional during a football game.
Let's go Buffalo!!!
I Agree! It was a class move by the coaching staff! A memorable moment for the team and Kyle.

would we win hands down?? Or, does the good weather in Miami help Tyrod & McCoy move the offense to a victory??
Thoughts?

I was a member of the BBMB for years and what i found was that everyone fought all the time...........everyone was always wrong about everything and the petty quarrelling was monotonous.
Mind you, as the saying goes, "if you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem" and i may have had a small part in the never ending chaos, but when your views and opinions are constantly being thrown under the bus, well then you just kind of go with the flow and create bedlam as a backlash.
I love this site.
Everyone seems to get along well and respects each other.
I felt the same. The 'fighting' was silly and the mods were a big part of it.

My friend, you are 32 years of age and in your 10th NFL season. You'll get a nice NFL pension and plenty of wonderful memories! Your greatest football days are behind you. (laughter)
All I ask of you for Sunday vs. the Dolphins is:
-run hard and straight at defenders
-knock tacklers off you
-no moves to the outside
-NO fumbles
This could be your last game in the NFL. Make yourself a hero in Buffalo Bills history! Just do it. You can!

Games that matter in the AFC Play-Off race, the final week of the season and Buffalo is part of the SHOW!!
Bills vs. Miami, Oakland vs. Chargers and Bengals vs. Ravens ALL AT 4:30 PM New Years EVE !! The Bills have a shot at the final play-off spot!
How in the hell did we get here with a rookie HC, a roster with 65 % new players from '16 ( and no super stars ) and with TT at QB?
Complain all you want about what should have been done, what could have happened, who we should have kept on the roster or who should have come to the team 3 years ago. This the reality of 12-31-17. New Years Eve!
GO BILLS!!- 2

Cadet may not go down in history as a great or even good running back but when he comes in to spell shady I don't cringe like I did when Tolbert would come in.
He's been a pleasant surprise running rather than just as a pass catcher. He seems to get to the edge with ease.
I have a hunch he will be part of the wrinkle we add this week for the pats. His and shady both on field at same time. Gives tyrod simple throws that could net big yards. Beat the pats at their own game.
That's why this team built by new management and coaching is so interesting! Cadet is making $410,000 per year. Gillislee of the PATS who has been a healthy scratch for the last 4 weeks earns $4 mil per season. It's nice!

Definitely could improve with clock management, but there is so much more to coaching than that and with the lack of talent this team has, he's really held this together and has had them playing good fundamental football.
Thanks for a good, logical response. When you really digest the talent on the team overall it's pretty amazing !

A rookie head coach. A brand new staff. A roster that went on the field today with 36 new players from last season! These new players weren't superstars at all. Joe Webb, Shareece Wright, Mike Tolbert, Ramon Humber, Ryan Davis, Vladimir Ducasse, Cap Capi and more. And, all of them contributed to an 8 win season that was an improvement over last year!
This staff molded this group into a team that could win games in the NFL. No wonder they had to be conservative many times with the overall skill sets of the players.
Congratulations to the Coaches and the Players! The Bills future looks bright.

How can the Chargers, with this many successful QB’s over the years, NEVER win anything meaningful??? Humphries was the only one to lead them to a Super Bowl in 1994. I don’t think Rivers can!

Time has run out on the Bills. Their play has regressed during the 2nd half of the season while Miami has improved. Nice Dolphin wins over the Titans, Chargers and Patriots without their starting QB is impressive.
The Bills have had inconsistent Quarterback play since the start of the season and that hasn't improved. And, with the constant week-to-week change over in wide receivers that makes the entire offense tougher to manage.
Miami should win by 10+ unless McCoy goes crazy on the ground!

I don't have the 'inside' or 'investment banker' connections that some other posters seem to have -but- building a 67,000 outdoor stadium in Pembroke or Batavia NY is NOT going to happen!!!! The Pegula's have invested billions in the Sabres, the Key Bank Center, the 20 story Harbor Center with 2 full size ice rinks and a hotel, Canalside and the 716 Restaurant & Sports Bar. ALL but New Era Field are in BUFFALO!
Why oh why would they want to pull business away from their downtown investments?? Make it more difficult for Canadian fans to get to a game ? All for 10 games a year to let fans party in the parking lot. Insane and nonsense!

A rookie from Temple that was supposed to be a back-up guard. He's become an excellent LT and makes injury prone Glenn with his big contract expendable. A great draft pick! He's always celebrating in the end zone after a Bills TD. In the Indy game he was throwing snow at the fans and shoveling snow off the field. After the game the team went to Ilio DiPaolio's Restaurant to celebrate. When an employee left to go home and was stuck in the 15" of snow Dion was the first player out the door to help push her out!
A good player, a good team mate and a good man!

For those guys, I would agree with Beane as well. None of them are making a huge contribution at this point.
Maybe that's why Groy and Miller aren't playing at LG at all - - the HC trying to prove a point with the GM????

Thanks for the love. I came over, same name. Just not as active on the boards as I was when I was in college.
GREAT! It was a great group back then!!

Everyone kind of just roaming around trying to figure out where their home went. I just remember hearing about this place over there so I went here first. I’m not going to lie, I’m glad a few of those guys didn’t make it lol. I just kept the same name so if a lot of other refugees did the same, it would feel a little more like home.
I really thought some of the major posters and mods got some kind of an advance notice before BBMB went down out of the blue! Crazy.

Come on - what was the old name???

Where have all the Posters gone – long time passing
Great, dedicated, big time BBMB posters have disappeared. Have they joined the new Message Boards with new identities?
These were posters that had an opinion and just didn’t reply to threads with negative insults!
Why do you quit after years of interest in the BBMB and love for the Bills? Why?
Any additions to the list?

Good write up! Question - why is Tolbert playing so much? Cadet seems to offer the same type of game as Shady.
-
It was obviously helmet to helmet - the video shows that. The announcer said that a QB that dives head first is to be treated like any other running back or receiver - what the hell does that mean in regards to helmet to helmet hits??? It was clear the Bills on the field were upset with a lot of pushing and shoving after the play. The tackler went low to the head when Peterman was on the ground (snow).
Why was it basically ignored????????
-
Nice game today - - 9 total tackles leading the team (8 solo). He did lose coverage on a couple of plays.
-
Avery interesting post as was the game. Milano had 9 tackles to lead the team - -8 of them were solo. Games like this one are good for him, Peterman and all the rookies to learn from - including the HC.

McCoy backup, why so thin at RB?

This staff feels adequate RB's are a dime a dozen! That doesn't sound nice but it's true. Get a guy with some shake and a good work ethic and we'll be ok!!
