Every year we talk about it and every year we do nothing important. I wouldn’t waste another minute, I’d call Denver tonight and say name your price for Surtain…we won’t do anything though and it’s a waste of a thread unfortunately

It would make no difference.   We have lost Milano and we can’t fix that.  Also, offensively this team is unable to run to establish a rhythm.  James Cook is not the answer.  Also, we have no receivers other than Diggs that can create enough separation consistently to help Allen.  This season is over.

You're right. I NEVER see teams breaking long runs once a year or more against other teams. It's only the Bills.

    And pretty much everybody else.

Over the course of a whole season, teams are likely to allow one or two. I took a quick look for the Niners and the Jets last year, two terrific defenses

SEA had a 50 yarder against SF.

SEA also had a 60 (Walker) yarder against the Jets.

    This stuff happens.

    Yup.

It's part of the cost of letting Edmunds go. He was excellent at lining them up correctly, and they don't have anyone else right now with much experience at doing so.

Likely they'll get better at this as the season goes along.

    You saw this, right?

I would guess that it's because you don't watch any other team so consistently?

I'd guess that just about every defense gives up one really long run every year.

I’m suggesting that there is a flaw in the scheme or personnel that allows this to happen every year.  I have seen Bills teams in the past where this does not happen.   I’m also willing to bet that this does not happen to every team, though I have no proof.

We will be fine. He was on the bubble this year frankly. RB room is loaded, best shape in years. We have Harty and Shakir as returnees. Bad break, but not a big blow as far as I'm concerned

Loaded with whom?  Hines was the only guy on our offense that had any real speed.  Now he’s gone.  Our lack of speed will be our crutch this year and I blame Beane for not doing anything about it.

was Zay a failure vs not a fit given coaching changes?  He has had a de ent career after buffalo instead of being out of football.

i judge drsfted based on player career success irrelevant  of where they played.

I never called Zay a failure, just that he didn't work out in Buffalo.  It was a bit eye opening to look at some of our 2nd round picks that haven't really emerged.

Since Beane/McDermott have been with the Bills since 2017, the Bills have had seven 1st round picks, five of which have been used on the defense, two of them for the offense [Allen, Diggs (1st used in the trade to the Vikings)]. Without a doubt, Allen is a generational talent at QB, but outside of Diggs, the Bills WR is full of underachievers. Davis underwhelmed as a #2 WR and is a #3 WR at best. McKenzie could not handle the starting slot WR role. Crowder, Shakir and the others were either slot or gadget type players. Beasley and Brown were brought back to the team because of how badly the WR corps performed (outside of Diggs).

Since 2017, the highest the Bills drafted a WR was in the 2nd round [Zay Jones], the rest have been all between the 4th and 7th rounds:

    Ray Ray McCloud – 6th round (2018)

    Austin Proehl – 7th round (2018)

    2019 – No WRs drafted

    Gabe Davis – 4th round (2020)

    Isaiah Hodgins – 6th round (2020)

    Marquez Stevenson – 6th round (2021)

    Khalil Shakir – 5th round (2022)

I don't understand why the Bills have not given Allen all the tools to be successful? Beane maneuvered up and down the draft board to get in position to draft Allen, then gave him a $258 million dollar contract. Why does Beane/McDermott undervalue the WR position so much? Diggs cannot do everything on his own. When Diggs is double covered and taken out of the game, the rest of the WR's struggle to get open and catch on a consistent basis. With drafting lower round WR's, most of the time, they're not going to be NFL ready in year one. It took Hodgins to year three to show he can stay healthy and show some promise, but instead, the Bills kept Shakir on the active roster and put Hodgins on the Practice Squad, by which Hodgins was signed by the Giants. So if it takes Shakir three years to show promise, are the Bills going to take another low round rookie and keep that unproven rookie over a player they took the time to develop and train (like Hodgins?) Hate to say it, but I feel Beane/McDermott value RB's higher than WR's as we've seen Singletary and Moss drafted in the 3rd and Cook in the second.

Bottom line, Allen cannot do it all. Expecting Allen to continually stretch out plays, make things happen with his feet does not work out 100% of the time. Chiefs and Bengals have multiple weapons for Mahomes and Burrow, if the Bills are serious about winning a Superbowl, they need to give the same type of receivers to Allen before they waste all his good years.

We drafted Zay Jones in the second round and he didn't work out.  When I think about it: Jones, Ford, Dawkins, Espinoza were all 2nd round picks.  We don't seem to do well in round 2.

Bills been getting pushed around for 30 year, even in the superbowls before that. This team needs dogs and alot of them

This is true with one exception: when Wade Phillips was the DC and Ted Washington was at nose tackle when we ran the 3-4 defense.

Dorsey has a lot of faults. But Josh is not blameless in this either. Some questionable decisions. The interception down deep. The handoff to Cook that was supposed to be a run. He’s been making mistakes all season that we haven’t really seen for a few years.

To this point, I think we are seeing the effects of Daboll’s absence.  Last playoff season the Bills offense was crisp and mistake free - Josh threw no interceptions nor made this many questionable throws.  Dorsey is still learning the nuances of being an OC and I believe he’ll get better; it’s just unfortunate that he doesn’t have that luxury during the playoffs.  Also, he’s not as creative as Daboll.  It seems that every 3rd down for 5 or more yards we go with the “empty” set (five wide receivers).  In its formation we’ve seen many times how when a play breaks down that Josh is able to run. But lately teams have adjusted to this which is why he’s had limited success scrambling.  Why don’t we employ Gilliam and Morris more?  I think they can create mismatches.  These are just my observations and in no way am I an expert. One more thing - I think for the first time in a long time the offense actually ran the ball on 4 consecutive plays.  They need to do more of this in my opinion.

Beane really needs to stop dumpster diving in regards to the IOL.  A 1st or 2nd round pick on a guard who can transition to center would be nice…and then another OG on Day 3.

Two words - Cody Ford - 2nd round pick.  It’s not about the round of the pick, it’s about performance.  I wonder if maybe that’s the one area Beane doesn’t evaluate well….your thoughts.

For as great as Beane has been, second round selection success has been rough. Can’t hit on them all of course. Here’s hoping Epenesa and Cook can buck that trend. I’m optimistic on Cook. Not super confident on Epenesa, but we’ll see how he does under Von’s tutelage.

Don’t forget Zay Jones - 2nd round pick

  11. Do we still have Isaiah Hodgins?  I know he's been hurt but I remember reading that he was having a great training camp last year and was consistently getting behind the defense.  I think if he stays healthy and the maturity of Stephenson that we will have a fair amount of speed on offense - usable speed, and not just fast.  What are your thoughts?

    Who the hell thinks that?

Mahomes has two of the fastest WRs in the league, a top 3 TE of all time, and arguably the best offensive coach in football.

The Bills group of skill position players are average at best.

Must be nice to have multiple guys on offense that can take it to the house from anywhere on the field.

Allen does more with a lot less. There is zero doubt that he is the best player in the league imo.

Are our skill players average, or is it that they aren’t as fast as the Chiefs?

When everyone was complaining about the lack of a running game I still believed the OL was the biggest problem, not Singletary. After all, you can't miss holes that aren't there. The guy has been rugged the last few games and gotten extra yards on just about every run. That in turn has helped Allen quite a bit. He could be the missing piece in a Super Bowl run.

I was having a conversation with another Bills fan earlier this year who was trashing Singletary. I remember his rookie year when he led the NFL in yards per carry.  My argument was that his ability didn’t just disappear, so something else was wrong.  When you only got to carry the ball 9 times a game at the most, you can’t be expected to be effective.  I’m glad to see us FINALLY use him properly.

  14. The kid is a rookie - he has to learn just like all other rookies. Just think about how some of our recent rookies - 1st and 2nd round picks - have performed in their rookie season?   This dude has potential - elite speed.  He’ll get there.

  15. 51 minutes ago, Solomon Grundy said:

Brieda gives the “potential” of a home run play. You won’t get that from Motor/Moss. Remember how the Bills contained King Henry, but the 2 long runs was the difference in him having a subpar game to a super game

I agree with you.  He’s the only speed threat that we have on offense, and unfortunately we don’t have room on our roster for a true speed receiver because of the logjam.

Mods, I honestly didn't know what else to call this or where to put it.

I won't be able to write my random thoughts post this week.  I apologize as I know there are a few who look forward to that weekly post.  Other have posted similar threads and did an excellent job. I recommend taking a look.

    My apologies

Edit - many are assuming this is because they lost and I’m upset about it.  That is not the case.  I am pissed they lost, but I’ve written plenty of these after a bad loss.  Other things, that I don’t feel like sharing came up, and I don’t want to half ass it.  Also, my seats made a lot of things difficult to see, so I don’t even know if my notes are accurate.

All things I didn’t think I had to go into, but apparently some look for the negative

Hey Virgil.  I appreciate all that you do and I also look forward to your post every week.  Those of us that have respect for you and this forum understand that life happens, and it doesn’t always ask for our permission.  I hope all well and i’ve got your back.
