  1. I'd offer him a fair restructure proposal, considering that he's been unavailable/not a difference maker for most of his time here... maybe 2M with performance and availability incentives that could get him to 4-ishM.

If he wants to play, this makes sense for both sides.

If he declines, it's a solid indication that he doesn't want to play and they should release him.

Yeah I know.  Sit. out a season, don't get vaxed, skip voluntary camp, sit out practice week 1 because already injured, get on covid list for close contact, get on covid list for 15 days because unvaxed and catches covid, come back and sit out with a toe injury, come back and play limited snaps, miss practice and the most important game of the season because personal reasons.

Sure the personal reasons could be something serious.  Personally, and I have said this for weeks... I think Star is checked out and getting an easy pay day doing as little as possible.  I know that's unpopular but the guy is getting a lot of money to basically sit out two seasons.  A couple of those things then sure fine.  It is what it is but every week is a different reason for this guy not to play football.

Appreciate you laying out the timeline and his "reasons" for missing so much time.  I agree completely that he's checked out, but still gets is paycheck.  I wonder how he's perceived in the locker room and by the coaching staff?  Cutting him would send a strong message.

  3. Nope... not going to overreact to 1.5 games of good play.  This team has shown that they are wildly inconsistent and I'm not sure who we're going to get, week to week.

I'll keep watching and cheering, but I'm not going to read anything into their recent play.

🤦‍♂️CTFD. Nowhere close to the biggest game in the series. Not even in the same universe. This is merely a midseason game. No playoff spots will be awarded for the winner, the loser is still very much in the hunt.

For a little much needed perspective, these teams played in the 1st ever AFL Playoff game in 1963, forced when we ended the season tied. Pats* won decisively then got blown out by San Diego in the title game. The ‘64 season finale between us decided the Eastern Division title where we went on to dethrone the Chargers for our 1st Championship. They were our chief rival the following season as we won Back to Back League titles. OJ rushed for over 450 yards in the 2 games in ‘73, enroute to 2000 yards in 14 games -still unmatched! In the strike-shortened/Scab-ball season of ‘87, we needed only to beat them in the season finale to make the playoffs. They beat us 14-6. We would go on to win 5 of the next 6 Division titles. Last season was the 1st time ever we swept the Division with the closest game being the 1st one with them, where Justin Zimmer stripped the ball from Cam Newton late to secure the win.

    Your table is ready, Sir.

Wow, the condescending nature of this response aside, this game is one of the biggest in memory.  Especially considering the Bills under-delivering this year compared to expectations (they were sky-high).

If the Bills lose, this thing PROBABLY unravels and this season takes on a completely different tone.

  5. I think I read that as part of Addison's pay cut they also voided the last year of his contract.  So, he and Hughes are both free agents after this year.

So, this signing makes sense from that perspective as well.

I wouldn't be surprised either; if they add another EDGE and go EDGE, CB2, DT in the first three rounds of the draft.

  6. I don’t believe that Beane goes into the season with essentially the same team as last year.  I know it’s been discussed many times, but our best window to win it all is now and next 2023, so, I won’t stop believing that we’ll get another offensive weapon and defensive playmaker.  If not, it will be a bit of a buzzkill regarding hope levels for next season.

Mahomes has really taken a beating early in his career. Eventually those take their toll, no matter how gifted you are.

Allen has stayed fairly healthy, as QBs go. Let's hope he can continue to protect himself, which he did a very good job of this season.

Agree... Mahomes had the neck/head injury, the dislocated kneecap (last year?), now the toe surgery.  We'll see if it affects his longevity.

It was good to see Josh's development and patience to stay in the pocket, roll out or throw it away (and slide much more!)

Ravens definitely do...the Seahawks used to, hence their Legion of Boom moniker...Bucs used to with Derrick Brooks in their SB winning days...Eagles when they had Reggie White and the Buddy Ryan led D...Bills used to as well when they had Spikes, and to a lesser degree Bradham. Last year we played violent at times also...

Most of the time good defenses tend to look more violent because in general they are in closer proximity to where the football is leading to more big hits when the player may not be ready for it or more "bang bang" type plays where the defender and ball get to the receiver at the same time

Appreciate the perspectives.  I think the turnover +/- is a good surrogate metric for aggressiveness and maybe violence.

I agree that some players just have it, like some that have been mentioned.  I would say that the Bills that play with violence are Milano and Hughes... maybe Oliver.

  9. I’m a three decade Bills fan, but I was also raised in Pittsburgh and always admired the way they play defense.  Regardless of year, talent level, record; they play defense with a violence level that seems slightly above the rest of the league.

They aren’t dirty, but they deliver hit/blows that sometimes other teams might not attempt.  They also seem to always swarm to the ball carrier with consistently high intensity. It’s kind a a hardwired element of their approach.  I appreciate watching it.

With all of the sophistication in analytics, I wonder if/wish there was a way to measure “violence”.

Anyone agree or have other teams that play with consistent violence levels (Ravens?).

  10. If we all expected to go deep into the play-offs this year (I did), I think we need to downgrade our expectations... based upon what we've seen on the field.

Our current situation doesn't align with what Beane and the organization set as their expectations either, so, that kinda sucks.  Hopefully, Beane and crew keep learning and improving, and we are actually positioned for a SB run next year.

Beane is doing great.  Some of his picks, like Ford and Edmunds and even Allen,  are still developing.  Are you really going to criticize 4
th and 5th round picks (Knox and Joseph)?

He has consistently upgraded the talent with free agents while not overpaying.  None of the players you mention put us in cap trouble and all of them have contributed.

He has not been perfect but he has built an exciting team, a competitive team, and a culture of winning. Players want to play here.   Do you want to bring back Whaley, Nix, Brandon,  Levy, Modrak and Donahoe?     I sure don’t.

I'm always comparing our progress to teams that are currently competitive to win the Super Bowl, and it seems like we could become stuck in the "we're a play-off team with limiting flaws"

I agree that Beane is better than previous regimes, top to bottom, and heck, by Buffalo standards, he might be great... however, I want us to make the next jump and I'm skeptical regarding his ability to get us there.

  12. I'll join the "pile on" party this evening...

Overall, Beane's drafting and FA handling are starting to show cracks... probable misses on high picks like Ford, Edmunds, Phillips, Joseph, maybe Knox.  Many good FA adds like Feliciano, Morse, Beasley, Brown; but several misses or marginal upgrades like Klein, potentially Norman, Spain, Murphy (jury's out on this year's crop - Butler, Addison).

Part of the results of the middle-of-the-pack GM performance is a linebacking group and dline that are bad, with terrible depth and few play makers/game changers on defense (other than Milano and Tre); and plays soft.

Beane, by all accounts is a very bright and hard working GM, however, if I look closely at the roster and results, it's not as positive as I've been thinking for the last year plus.
