Conclusion: Josh has to improve tremendously next year to be considered legit.

Uh, he already improved tremendously from the first half of the season to the second.  I'd say he needs to continue to improve but he's not that far away.  Already he is an exciting QB capable of winning with a better supporting cast.

I'd bet anyone $1,000 right now that Allen's 2019 completion percentage doesn't exceed 59.9%, falls short of 20 TDs, and throws at least 14 INTs. The homers around here want to still blame the line and skill position talent and I'll agree with that but that doesn't account for the entire issue with Allen. He is still wildly inaccurate with bad mechanics. None of that has been improved. So you can still argue that it's not his fault by blaming everything but him but if you watch with your eyes instead of your heart, you'll see a kid who hasn't improved his physical or mental game. And next year, what will the excuse be when the talent will be, without question better (how can it be worse) after FA and the draft and he continue to throw off his back foot, be laughably inaccurate, and makes many mental mistakes?

I'd take the bet except he may still have crap teammates on O next year.  He's not overly inaccurate.  When you take into account the drops and times he's had to throw balls away because his line and receivers stink he's been okay.  Also, he's done much better the games since the injury when he decided to run if the line wasn't going to block and the OC started to call routes that created that open space.  He is not wildly inaccurate.  Every game QBs miss some WRs and he's shown improvement.

Yeah, that’s the part I hate. Allen is a rookie on a bad offense (the same people who picked him built this offense).  So he gets some slack.

But to pretend like other QBs won’t make plays with this ground is just silly.  Minus Moss, Brady made stars out of scrubs.  People used to talk about how terrible the Steelers and Seahawks oline were but Big Ben and Wilson still made plays and won.  Mahomes is missing his 2nd receiver, pro bowl rb, and still makes plays. Hell, Nick Mullen’s plays with crap and is a better passer.

Allen does some great things.  But the excuses are so old.  Hopefully, we upgrade the oline and get Julio and AJ Green so we can stop with the excuse making.

    Merry Christams!

I understand - my opinion of the oline is just way worse than some other people I think.  In all those examples there was a much offensive line than ours.

Zay Jones would be the highest drafted receiver on the Saints.  You don’t think Brees would be an upgrade?  That’s kinda crazy man.

I didn't say he wouldn't be an upgrade but we wouldn't be going to the playoffs either.  The only reason we've had any offense the past few weeks in because of Allen.

Irrespective of his poor starting cast it does not have everything to do with his play.  He has opportunities to make plays in every game and he does sometimes that begins with good decision making followed by use of his talent.  There are other times when he does not as expected with playing a rookie QB.  It's all part of his learning experience.

We don't have to pretend he plays perfectly and would be doing great were it not for the players around him.  He went to Belichick school yesterday and he'll be better for the experience in the long run.

I'm not pretending he's perfect nor did I say that.  He's still a rookie of course but he's been much better than I expected.

That is insight that you're trying to change the subject to another player that has nothing to do with how Allen played in the game. Nice try though.

That was in response to a post pointing out how awful Allen's supporting cast is and has everything to do with his play.  Name a QB that could look good in this offense with players dropping TDs, no blocking, crap TEs - not even Brees would look like an NFL QB with these losers.  Allen is not the problem right now.

  6. It is so hard to be optimistic at all about the Bills looking ahead three years.  You can't let your team get so piss poor at so many positions.  My problem with the team is that there is no way they can make enough needed improvements in one or two years.  They have some okay aging players to replace too like Kyle Williams and Alexander.  And their scouting sucks!  For example, I don't care how fast Edmunds is - the best MLB are never rangy guys - they are always spark plugs.  Plus they drafted him too young - you can tell he's athletic but you couldn't tell if his football IQ was high enough.  He consistently makes poor decisions.  He'll have to move outside.  Not totally opposed to the pick but you NEVER trade up for anything but a sure thing and he was far from it.  We needed so many players at so many spots and we are wasting picks to move up?  If we are 12-4, 11-5 and need someone to get over the hump maybe but we are so far away from good it's not funny.

Problem is I have no confidence in the GM or coach so far.  They have sucked so far at building a team and have gone backwards so fast how are they possibly gonna address all the crap areas - from WR, OL, TE, ST, LB - in one offseason?  I try so hard to be hopeful but it is tough finding any hope when every team in our division has a lot less holes to fill.  How are we to leap frog them?  I do like Allen though and he's a very entertaining player to watch.  He is just playing with the worst tools in the league so I feel sorry for him.

  7. History shows that trading first round picks for players like this and signing them to huge contracts doesn't usually work out and I don't think it will go well for the Bears.  Way too much salary for a LB and you lose your cheap labor (first round picks).  Because you can't afford to pay top dollar at many positions in today's NFL I think drafting well is more important than ever so you build with affordable quality players and keep a few difference makers.  If I was GM I would trade down every draft to accumulate as many 1-5 round picks as possible to build a team with good depth and then find a franchise QB.

  8. Peterman is the kind of players Bills fans should be behind 100%.  If it doesn't work out there is Allen but Peterman could be a Rich Gannon type QB with the right OC and you can win with players like that.  He's smart and he's still learning his limitations.  If you throw sideline routes late at all any QB can get picked off.  McCarron threw a pick six.  I don't like those routes in general because there's little YAC anyway.  I prefer screens and wheel routes where the receiver is moving upfield when they get the ball and they are generally safer throws.

Anyway, Buffalo is a blue collar city who should be all about the underdog.  I'm impressed Peterman didn't let one half game and one snow game destroy his confidence.  He's been doing all you can ask of him and trying to make the most of his talent.  That's a player I hope surprises everyone for a very long time.  He's a starter now until he proves he is a backup.  It's in our best interest if that isn't any time soon.  I wish "fans" would get off his back.

  9. Yes my expectations are lower because he was supposed to provide some experience and could have given us another option if Peterman chokes in live action.  Peterman has looked good this preseason but regular season is different.  McCarron did not look good but he was also getting used to a new situation and has played well for Cincy so I think we could have one some games with him.  Too bad they were hell bent to get rid of Tyrod because I think that would have been a better situation with him playing until Allen was ready.  We all hope Allen is the answer but it doesn't appear he is quite ready so winning this year seems to rest on Peterman.  I'd be very surprised if Allen played before Peterman gets hurt or we have 4 losses early.

  10. This is going to be an interesting season.  I'm trying to think of an Oline that looks worse than the Bills but I can't think of one.  Yet Daboll might have the magic to make them look better than they are like Gailey did.  I suspect they are better at run blocking than pass blocking because individual matches can be exploited and obvious passing downs could be really bad.  Plus the WR talent won't help them out.  May need to throw to the RBs and TEs a ton.  It will be very interesting to see what happens!

  11. Peterpan starts because that's the only logical thing to do.  If they start Allen and it's not working and the team needs a spark I don't think Peter provides that.  But if the O struggles with Pete than Allen as plan B makes a lot more sense as he can learn the rest of his rookie season like Manning and I believe Luck did.  I hope Peterman does well though and shows what perseverance can do.  Has a terrible first game and the next chance he gets to play it's the worst blizzard game ever in Buffalo.  His stats can only improve.  Let's just hope the O-line isn't as bad as we think because right now I can't think of a worse O-line in the NFL.

  12. I think they see this as a rental situation. He'll likely play motivated for the rest of this season where they have a real chance to win their division. If/when he goes back to being Darius they'll cut him.

Question for the cap experts. I know the partial cap relief this gets us but if Jacksonville cuts him in a year or two do they suffer the same cap hits we would have? If they do I think it is a pretty dumb move by them to expect he'll change his stripes for long.

  13. There are two people to blame for where we are: Whaley for giving a guy with known issues including poor work habits an unwise contract extension. Then blame the player who can only get on the field for half the snaps and is one headline away from being untradeable.

Neither of these are on the new GM or coach. Credit them for being smart enough to understand what many past administrations have not: you can't motivate a player that doesn't want to be motivated and you can't build a winning culture by being hypocritical and carrying players who aren't focused on winning.

  14. There are many elements to this trade we are not fully aware of. First, the team likely knows if Darius is capable of focusing on his job or there will be more problems in the future. You can't win consistently with players who aren't consistent. You can't pay 100m to a non-leading player you can't trust. It's not this GMs fault the old GM gave Darius an almost untradeable contract. Darius makes one more mistake and you will never get another organization to take on his contract. Darius was one headline away from having to be cut and, I am no expert, but I would think that cap hit would be worse than this trade. I am sure Darius will play inspired for a few weeks but I am 95% sure he won't be worth the rest of his contract for Jacksonville. I also suspect his attitude in the locker room was not conducive to the atmosphere they wanted to build and this trade shows every player they are serious about what is required in the future to be a Bill. Using one overpaid player to get the attention of the rest of the team can pay off in a hundred other ways.

It's not that Darius is an awful player but for his contract he is an awful player. They have been competitive without him so it is a smart, decisive move by this GM. If you want to knock a GM knock the one that gave this guy with his known issues at the time a foolish contract extension.

  15. How about people just stop being idiots. That's why they're offended by a simple protest. Because they can't understand the other side's point of view or they're too simple-minded to think outside the box.

Villenueva (the Pittsburgh lineman) apologized because he did it the wrong way. Exactly what you're claiming the kneelers are doing. Did you even listen to him explain himself?

He simply didn't understand the situation and was also a victim of peer pressure. You know what we did in the military when we heard the national anthem, but couldn't see the flag? We simply turned in the direction of the song and stood at attention. Simple. Logical. That's all Villanueva had to do and he realized that after the fact, so he apologized. He didn't mean to divide his team or contribute to such a stupid, stupid, stupid crusade.

People can protest how they want. The flag represents SO many things to all different groups of people. Not just our vets. Or our immigrants. Or our immigrant vets. Our our politicians. Or our minority politicians. Or our young. Or our old.

Holy hell. People need to just shut the !@#$ up, unless they have something worthwhile to say.

So you just called me an idiot and told me to shut the hell up because I don't share your opinion and declared that Villenueva did something the wrong way. If everyone is allowed to protest (or not) how they want why does he have to apologize for "dividing" his team. This is my point, if you want to convince a larger group of your viewpoint and that something needs attention it is wise to do so in a way that doesn't upset people that happen to think differently about an important symbol than you do. Of course, people can protest how that want which is what makes this country special. But it doesn't mean they shouldn't find a more productive, effective way to do it. I don't think it is wise just to order people not to be offended. Perhaps finding a way not to offend is more helpful toward your cause.

  16. You are misinterpreting my comment as a complaint and I never said disgraceful. I understand freedom of expression but my point is there has got to be a better way. There is such a thing as flag etiquette and if it wasn't understood as disrespectful then why would the players use it as a protest in the first place?

Here is just one section of flag etiquette:

•All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

So it is not in my own mind which was a rude way to frame the discussion. Not everyone loves the military but you should respect what veterans have given in service to this country as represented by the flag.

where is it written that kneeling for the anthem is a disgraceful, disrespectful act?

(the correct answer is in your own mind)

Sometimes the country needs a wake up call.

There are so many in this country who (a) think there is no more racial equality problem, (b) doesn't care that there is a racial equality problem, or © is glad there is a racial equality problem because it benefits them personally.

To me, the flag/anthem represents exactly what you say - the idealism of freedom, liberty and equality and to honor those who stood for them (especially but not excluded to the military). That's why I will always stand.

But that flag/anthem doesn't mean the same to everyone. And even if it does, it doesn't prevent one from making a statement in this way when they find it necessary.

Very well said. My point is they could find a way to make a statement that isn't as divisive as kneeling during the national anthem.

Why would the "average white guy in the stands" feel "mad and disrespected" by the black players who are exercising their first amendment right? If they're mad then that's on them.

I don't think we should make it about race. I am sure many people of all backgrounds are upset - not because they don't have the right but because they choose to use it in this way instead of another way of stating their concerns.

  17. Here's what I don't get. The flag stands for all that is right with America. I know someone that just left Japan because the government was interfering/spying on their female workforce. The flag represents the idealism that is the United States and doesn't exist elsewhere. If players want to make a statement against anything why don't they just kneel prior to the anthem and then rise together when it begins. The message is sent but you are not disrespecting the flag which represents millions of service men and women who have fought and died for this country and represents all the things you are preaching about such as equality. If you don't think we are there yet as a country don't complain about the symbol for the idealism that says we should be there complain about the people responsible for not getting us there. Not standing for the flag doesn't serve any purpose other than increasing the divisions among people you say shouldn't exist! You want to be understood but don't want to offer understanding.

Hasn't anyone thought to say there must be a better way! Then you have people like the Pittsburgh lineman who served our country apologizing for having his own opinion about the flag and now Jim Kelly? if you think the country has work to do then find a way to actually improve it. Doing something that many people perceive as disrespectful to the country seems to me to be very counter-productive.

  18. I wanted to reply a while ago but it is the first chance I have had. Often when passing yards are low with TT the criticism can be justified but you have to know the game circumstances. In this case TT has a very strong game and his passing yards are not a negative statistic. Often when a QB throws for 300 yards it is because the team falls behind or the defense is poor and the offense has to be aggressive.

In this game the Bills were up and the defense was strong. While TT and the O got off to a slow start (which needs to get fixed) after that they were fine. You have to add in the smart plays TT made with his legs that every QB can't make and there were a few dropped passes. If he plays like he did the final three quarters in every game the Bills may make the playoffs.
