  1. If only we were preparing him for med school....

As it is, we are asking him to throw a football for a living.

    But he can't read defenses....

If football was only won on pamphlets...

You guys totally missed the point of Lee's comment.

He talked about Fitz being the smartest, most prepared QB along with Pennington he's ever worked with. He said by Friday, Fitz would know if the coverage would be Cover 3 or man or whatever based on what the defense would show because he prepared so much.

That's why QB's watch film all the time. That way when the step up to the center, they have a very good idea of what the defense will do and know what they want to do with the ball. THAT is what is encouraging about EJ acing that test. He retains what he learns. If a QB is dumb, they could watch 1,000 hours of film, but when they step up to the center, if they don't remember any of it, they are screwed.

But yeah, why would a QB need to be smart and be able to retain football knowledge, they're just throwing a football, right?

  2. This is a very good listen from someone who obviously knows there stuff and has worked with Rex in the past.

Says Rex has a great rapport with players and is a brilliant defensive coach. He has a great understanding of defense and has been exposed to football his entire life. Knows defense front end to back end and knows when to call the right play to take advantage of the defense vs. the offense.

3-4 or 4-3 talk is overrated. Rex will use the personnel and run the system that the players can run best. 60% of the time the defense runs nickel anyway. By now most fans recognize these facts, but it continues to pop-up.

Greg Roman has been around and has a great understanding of the game. He's been exposed to a lot of different systems and will adjust his system to what the personnel does best.

He talked about EJ and how the jury is still out on him. He talked about Seattle's approach to the QB position when they found R. Wilson. They had signed Flynn and traded for Whitehurst the same year. He said we could see the Bills do something similar. I really hope they do, we need to see at least 2 new guys brought in to compete.

Usually takes 22-25 starts to find out what you have in a QB (EJ's at 15). There's no "QB Whisperer" that is going to come in and magically make EJ a franchise QB. He says the game isn't too big for EJ which was the best thing he saw early on. They still need to find out what they have in EJ.

The perception is Rex is a defensive coach only, Billick doesn't agree. He gives the Bills credit for hiring a head coach instead of going after an OC because the offense is what struggled and not the defense. Rex will absolutely be involved with the offense, he's not just a defensive coach.

The difference between a first time head coach and someone with experience is huge. Invaluable experience having gone through the process before.

    http://media.wgr550.com/a/101073925/120-brian-billick-talks-rex-ryan.htm

Overall it sounds like Billick likes what the Bills have done with the coaching hires. The number one thing they need to do is find a QB, which isn't surprising to anyone. I really, really hope they are aggressive with their search and aren't satisfied with a mid-tier veteran FA pickup.

  3. That's what I took away from it too. Rex has seen at least 2 other team facilities, maybe more. But, he genuinely seemed impressed by what the Bills had going on. That's kinda nice to see and have affirmed.

And one of those was MetLife stadium that just opened 5 years ago. You'd think that would be a top of the line facility, but Rex seemed very impressed with everything.

In his sit down with Chris Brown he says it's the best locker room he's seen. High praise right there.

  4. Sorry bro. I coached 17 years in high school and JC and my son is coaching college ball in N,C and the thought that it will take less than an off season is simply ignorant. Harder even than in the pros than college due to restrictions in acquiring good talent. But otherwise you're spot on.

You realize that this past year was their first year with Schwartz? And that the year before that, they had Pettine, who basically runs Rex's defense? So how exactly did they field the 4th best defense this past year if it's so hard to change systems?

  5. Where have I seen that lady before?......hmmm

I'm 90% sure she's in the video when EJ first comes to Buffalo and she introduces herself to EJ.

It's definitely a little thing, but I like that Rex introduced himself to her. She looks like she is just going to let him go without saying anything and Rex takes the initiative.

  6. Derek, I really disagree with you. Here's why...

We didn't just hire Rex. We hired the Rex/Roman combo and - although it took me a while to warm up to this - I think it will be a great coaching duo for the Bills.

In San Francisco, Alex Smith was 1st round bust and perpetually mediocre QB until he blossomed under Roman's tutelage.

Then Harbaugh decided to start Kaep over Smith and, as we've seen this year, Kaep sucks. Kaep isn't a good QB and his inaccuracy held Roman's offense back. When you say Kaep is better than EJ, did you actually watch Kaep play this year?

According to the Sacramento Bee*, the 49ers left 100 points on the table this season either because receivers dropped passes or Kaep threw inaccurate balls. That's not the Roman's fault. That's lack of player talent. Roman is clearly better than Hackett - at least Roman had his rushing offense in the top ten every year.

As far as Rex is concerned, over the past 6 years, the Jets were the best D in the NFL in passing yards, completion percentage, first downs and yards per play. Rex accomplished those stellar defensive statistics despite the crap talent Idzik acquired for him. Rex just might make our good Bills D into a great D.

Let's imagine this: Ryan has our D in the top five (again) and Roman gets our running attack in the top 10. That's what these gentlemen tend to accomplish and it may be enough to get us into the playoffs. We almost made the playoffs this year despite an offense that was putrid at everything.

Whaley is a smart man. He knows he doesn't have an immediate solution at QB. So he brings in Rex to make the D even better and because he knows Rex prefers to run the ball - something we can realistically hope to do well next year. And with Rex's assistance, Whaley brings in Roman whose expertise is building running attacks. Sure, they'd love to find a franchise QB. In the meantime, they're building a team that will get into the playoffs in 2015 without a marquis QB.

At this point, all we truly need are two OGs. I'm guessing Whaley has a plan for the OL too. It's going to be a fun offseason and next January we're going to be watching the Bills on TV.

I don't think the situation could be summarized better.

This defense played well under pettine and better under Schwartz. Ryan isn't stupid, he won't force a system that the players can't execute. The defense won't take a step back, they'll probably get better.

I can't imagine roman is anything less that Hackett, more than likely better. Therefore, how is this a step back? A second year of consistency on offense equated a worse offense. The defense was in its first year of the system. The op makes some ok points, but I think is missing the big picture.

  7. Im not exactly sad Marrone is not returning ...but think for a minute as coach. Where would you go with this team....you have EJ and no other QB...and a 1 year contract that is basically make or break win or your gone. I'd want an extention as we move forward with EJ as well - any coach would honestly and I think we all know it

To be honest, if it was all about job security, then forget Marrone. I'm fine with asking for an extension, but don't quit if you don't get it. If he had issues with Whaley and what players he was bringing in, then I would understand him leaving.

Leaving before you finish a job because the situation isn't ideal is a total B word move. If you leave because of creative differences, that's more acceptable for me, but I still don't like it.

  8. I noticed the same thing. I actually liked it at first, he started the season with some nice deep throws on the money. I think his throws hurt the receiver's ability to make adjustments to the ball in the air on throws that are off target. Now that he isn't throwing accurate, we aren't seeing as many deep passes completed.

I think the biggest issue is with the medium and deeper throws down the sideline. For example the 4th down to chandler, the pass had no chance. He also blew a similar throw to chandler against kc in the red zone. He doesn't get enough air under to allow the receiver to make a play on the ball.

That's not his biggest issue or why he isn't a good qb, but he isn't helping himself.

  9. PENALTY on BUF-N.Bradham, Taunting, 15 yards.

PENALTY on BUF-N.Bradham, False Start, 5 yards.

PENALTY on BUF-N.Bradham, Roughing the Passer.

PENALTY on BUF-N.Bradham, Face Mask (15 Yards).

    The taunting penalty was stupid.

Kyle and Dareus go offsides, should we cut them?

The roughing the passer was unfortunate. He went high to try and bat the ball away but then made contact with the QB's head. It wasn't blatantly late or anything dirty.

The face mask was unlucky. He went up to try and defend the pass and ended up grabbing the face mask.

Seriously, wanting Bradham gone for one bad day is ridiculous. He was pretty bad today, no question, but he's been very good. He's really far down on the list of people Vick has made look bad. It'd be dumb to give up on him now.

  10. And he had one play where he stretched out for the first down, not a lot of rookies have that kind of awareness.

That was a great play and looked like he might have been a hair short, but thankfully they didn't replay it. Definitely a heads up play by the rookie.

I was trying to find when that happened, was it the following play that took place in the 4th?

    • 3-6-BUF 30(11:59) (Shotgun) 18-K.Orton pass short right to 14-S.Watkins to BUF 36 for 6 yards (59-T.Whitehead).

If so, that helped setup the only TD of the game. Regardless, great play by the rookie in addition to the ridiculous catches.

  11. I used to go to McFadden's which is near the foggy bottom metro. It's been a few years, but that was always a good time.

I've never been to Laughing Man Tavern, I'll have to give that a try.

I think Jimmy's is the closest Bills bar to McLean. I live right around Tysons and don't know of anywhere else. There are tons of places that have Sunday Ticket though if you're looking for something closer.

  12. I see the seem route mis-connect entirely on the QB. It's a 'skinny-post' designed to connect before the safety can get over. IMO, Watkins ran the route perfectly as he would have been in the end zone by the time the safety arrived. That was on EJ.

So you know the playbook and know what was called there?

As far as I know no one has specifically said who's fault that was, so we don't know. If Sammy takes more of an angle, he would have had a TD because the safety wouldn't have been there in time.

We don't know who's fault that was which is why it annoys me when people automatically put it on EJ.

  13. I'll be at that game (Wife is a Ravens fan) then we're driving up the Buffalo for the Bills opener. Needless to say, this work day can't end fast enough.

Probably the best part about being at the game is I won't have to hear about Ray Rice from the commentators. I'm just going to keep my mouth shut about that whole situation. Ravens games aren't too crazy (at least when I was in Bills gear), but I've never ripped on one of their players. You never know if there's a crazy person near.

  14. Overall I thought they played above average. The pass blocking seemed more consistent than the run blocking despite the stats. Now you can't disregard the long runs, but it felt like most runs were only 2 to 3 yards at most. Some of that I think should be blamed on the play calls. They run too much out of the shotgun for my taste. Granted dioxins big gain and I believe Fred's to setup the game winning field goal were both from shotgun, I still don't believe in it. Spiller especially is not very effective running from that formation.

The pass blocking today was solid besides a few break downs. Henderson had a hold and got beat bad for a sack, but played pretty damn well for a 7th rounder. Like I said, I thought the run blocking left a little to be desired, but not a bad day overall.

  15. The move for Orton was a good one, the issue is why did they wait until a week before the season ? Why not make that move 2 weeks ago when they knew their backup QB's were having an issue, or why not make it instead of adding Jordan Palmer and give Orton some snaps in the last preseason game ?

Again, I like the move, but don't understand why they waited so long to make it.

As for this FO, they've done some good things and some bad things, in the end they'll be judged on the team's record this year. That's the only truly objective measuring stick.

I thought the same thing about the timing of the signing.

"The Bills had Orton on their radar for more than a month, but had their previous offers rebuffed."

    http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/football/2014/08/30/kyle-orton-signs-nfl-buffalo-bills/14854171/

That actually made me feel a lot better about it.

I think they have a clue, so far it's just not panning out as well as we all hoped.
