Born and raised in Toronto, Canada... back in the 1960's, television here was dominated by the big three American networks... and the stations available to us were based in Buffalo. We watched the local Buffalo newscasts and always had access to tons of Bills coverage. After Buffalo drafted a certain generational running back from USC... who, despite all that's happened in the intervening years, might just have been the most exciting football player that I have ever seen... my interest in the team really took off. A bit later on, when my friends and I could actually drive down to Orchard Park to see the Chuck Knox era teams play in person... I was completely hooked. The Marv Levy (a former CFL coaching great) Bills teams were just incredible... it's a crime that they didn't win at least one Championship. Granted... it's been a long drought since then... but I'm always ready to believe that the next season is the one where things will start to turn around again. Go Bills!

If this thread is supposed to be about who the Bills should sign as a back-up quarterback... I'm really not sure that Kaepernick is the right guy. I also highly doubt that he's even consider playing in Buffalo after the reception that he got during this past season's game at the "Ralph".
Personally... I would much rather see someone like Chase Daniel get the job. The ideal back-up should have some game experience, the ability to perform capably if the starter goes down in a game... or for a few games, be a good team mate and not create an immediate starting quarterback controversy and lastly have a similar skillset as the starter (in this case some escape ability versus being a pure pocket passer) so the whole scheme doesn't need to be changed if he has to play.
The problem is... most decent players only want to play. It's hard to find, develop and keep a guy like Frank Reich.

He wants to be a starter. After that contract to Tyrod, I don't think Bills are interested in another FA QB. given the structure of Tyrod's contract I believe they are drafting a QB this year or next year.
For me... the #2 QB is there to protect against having the entire season ruined by an injury to the starter. The #3 is the developmental guy. If we keep 2 developing QBs on the roster this year... we're really asking for trouble... especially considering how much Tyrod runs with the ball and takes hits. We have to sign a back-up that can play right now if needed.

IMO...they are going to build out the WR and DB positions through the draft.
Are we not just a little bit light at linebacker as well?

The Bills need to draft a QB in the first because Taylor sucks. Evidence of this is that no other team in the league wanted him, so he came back.
My write-in pick is Mahomes.

Think the plan is to have Cardale as #2 and Rookie as #3. All 3 guys on the 53 man roster like last year... I like Cardale but he needs another year or two at least, especially under a new system.
Lets hope Tyrod doesn't go down next year because it could get ugly.
Which is why we need a veteran as the #2 this season... with Cardale as the #3. The back-up QB just might have to play... CJ's not ready for that yet... and may never be. Hopefully another year will allow that assessment to be made.

You never know... this could be one of those years where he feels like playing.
I wouldn't really call it a lie. They do need room to sign everyone. Maybe like a gymnasium. And multiple pens, too, because if they have to share it could take a long time.

Losing Gilmore is a big loss....
Sure he is... there's no argument there. Every move has to be evaluated based on performance (notice that I didn't say talent... cuz how much and how well you play is really what matters) AND compensation. We simply could not pay Gilmore $14M per year based upon the team's cap situation and the player's history of performance. It's only my opinion I guess... but my eyes saw a very good cornerback... certainly not a great one. No doubt we'll likely be worse on that side of the field this season... probably using a player with much less experience in that role. Perhaps the defense can still be better overall through improving communication and coordination between all of the moving parts.

My feeling... after years of searching, the Bills have found an "Andy Dalton" caliber quarterback. My meaning is that you can win with him... and even make the playoffs.. as long a the team is sufficiently strong elsewhere (and doesn't get hit too badly by injuries).
Most of the other positions that people are complaining about this year have replacement players in them... and some of them are just not very good.
As far as the quarterback goes... Taylor is the best that we've had fin a long time... and he seems to be a decent leader as well. Meanwhile, I guess that there's no harm if the search continues for a "Drew Brees" caliber (or better) pivot that is capable of taking the team to another level. I just wouldn't be flushing Tyrod Taylor until we find one of those... that's all.

OJ Simpson was the best running back I've ever seen play for anyone... period. So there you go.

Did anyone watch Orton last season and, if so, have a critique of his play for Dallas? I'll try to watch NFL Game Rewind when I have time this week.
This from Sports Forecaster (an objective opinion I assume)...
Assets - A hard worker and good leader. Reads defenses well. Brings size, field vision, and arm strength to the NFL pocket. Can zip spirals all over the field and throws a solid deep ball. Has some mobility and can get out of trouble.
Flaws - Doesn't always set properly, winds up his delivery and will sometimes throw off-balance (leading to the odd bout of inaccuracy). Took a while to find his way in the NFL.
Career Potential - Inconsistent but above-average quarterback.

I seriously doubt they would cut Hoyer, I believe they'll move him in the near future, and somebody will give them a draft pick for him, I would love to see the Bills make a move to get him, but it's not going to happen.... I honestly don't believe the front office will bring in anybody that would create a QB controversy at this point, they went all in on EJ and barring injury that hasn't changed. Before we give up on EJ it should be noted he seems to have the full support of his teammates, the guys that play with him everyday have to see they have enough talent to make some noise this year, and nobody has stepped out and questioned him being their leader, in fact, it has been the exact opposite, his teammates have done nothing but support him, and that should speak volumes. I've been a Bills fan since the mid 70's over the past 40 plus years I've seen a lot of guys worth complaining about under center here in Buffalo. He's 28 of 37 with no tds and a pick so far, that's not that bad folks give him a chance. Just to stay on topic you must be f---ing insane if you think bringing the Tebow circus to town would in any way help this team.
Whether it's Hoyer or somebody else, you just can't head into a long NFL season with one competent QB. This isn't a shot against Manuel... but he got hurt twice last year and we've got exactly no one behind him. I don't remember having any QB controversies in Jim Kelly's era... but it sure was nice to know that Frank Reich was there (and capable of playing solidly) if needed.
The quarterback position is tricky... two good players and the team (or the media) can create a controversy. But having only one is far worse... you're basically one big hit away from washing out your season.

Not a Tebow fan at all... but both back-ups really looked bad last night.
As someone else said... Grossman would have been a nice veteran add. If the Browns cut Hoyer (doubt that they keep 3 well paid QBs) I wouldn't mind giving him a shot at the #2 job. At least the dude's proven he can win a game... and without much help at that.

I would bring in BOTH Winfield AND Trufant. U can never have enough corners and even when Gilmore is back. Both these guys will still be in rotation as 3rd and 4th CB unless Brooks does well in slot. He got beat a bit in pre-season, but he was always around the ball. Guy goes at 110%, solid tackler and learning on the job. Also, came from CB U in LSU. I see more pure ability than any of our CB's outside of Gilmore (pretty obviously). That slot CB which is loosely called #3 on depth chart is sooooo important. Gets used on blitz and in pre-season we saw alot of this with Kip Edwards blitzing from slot and doing great. I thought he was a surprise cut considering how bad rest were. Hopefully we keep that blitz package in, was nice seeing CB for 1st time in years!!
Those guys are certainly the best veteran options out there so far... trouble might be that older guys who are nearing the end like to be able to win. Bills can offer a starting opportunity, but they aren't even a sure fire playoff team this year.

I would be happy with one (or hopefully a couple) of these...
Antoine Winfield - would be a great story... solid veteran leader type... hopefully still has enough left in the tank to help bridge the talent gap til Gilmore is ready to play again.
William Middleton - doesn't have ideal size (which is why he's available) but has shown that he can play and is better than Bills current in-house options.
Roc Carmichael - cut by a deep defensive team... has the potential to start and hang onto the job when Bills are healthy again.
Chase Minnifield - not a lot of actual playing experience but size is better suited to Coach Pet's defensive scheme.
Marcus Trufant - slightly older (or more experienced depending on one's point of view)... has proven that he can play in the league and not be a weak link... probably a more solid corner option than McKelvin... for this season anyway.

No not really... I think that the description fits quite a few guys... I just hope that our new coach knows some of them.

Good observation... I think that one of the critical success factors for these guys is the ability to attract solid Coordinators who can carry a big part of the load while they acclimate themselves. I'm really hoping that Marrone can find that veteran coach to help him out... especially if he's on the defensive side of the house (and believes in being aggressive).

Chip Kelly as strong handed O coordinator and Lovie as head coach and heavy hand in the Def.
Russ says " he has the purse strings" and i think it's time to hit it out of the park, Brandon.
Put everything you got into this one. and dont swing for the cheap seats. Hit the damned scoreboard.
With those two fellows on board the sky is the limit.
No way Chip Kelly is leaving Oregon for an NFL Coordinators job...
So who's going to be the #2 QB?

The trouble with that philosophy is that the season is basically over if the starter gets injured... IMHO.
