Has a rookie head coach knowing his new team was picking a QB very high in the draft ever picked an offensive coordinator with no NFL experience at that position? That was a real dumb decision by Marrone. The Bills were also stupid in hiring him in the first place if that was his plan knowing that the team was targeting Manuel.
I don't know, but that was bad. I think that 1st year Hackett was acting as QB coach also....
Maybe they let Hackett pick E.J. !!!

To be accurate, Thad Lewis was acquired in August and was on the practice squad to start the season. He did have an NFL start on his resume, even if it was only one. I get that argument is grasping at straws.
But its not like they havent brought in other QBs, they even brought Vince Young back for a little bit. There just isnt much QB talent out there.
Here are our vet options for next year: http://forums.twobil...from-this-list/
Let me know who on that list we should bring in so Whaley doesnt "screw up the QB situation"...
1. Fair enough.
2. I don't know who they get. It's not me that waited six years before drafting a QB, the Bills brain trust with Buddy and Whaley did...
-
No, I haven't, and I totally agree that it hurt the team. The biggest mistake in there, IMO, was rushing to cut Tarvaris Jackson. At least with him on the roster you had some experience in the fold after Kolb went down.
Good point. Makes you wonder WHAT in h*ll they were seeing in Tuel and Lewis????? Unbelievable....
-
Well now hang on...Whaley didn't use his first pick on EJ either; he traded down and netted an extra 2nd rounder that turned into Alonso. By contrast, Cleveland had to trade back up from the No. 26 spot to get Manziel.
Also, Marrone did start with Kolb on the roster. I realize that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement, but he had thrown his share of NFL passes.
Well, he did use the 1st selection on EJ. Nice move waiting and trading back however.
Marrone started camp with Kolb, before tripping over his own feet, however started the season with no QB having attempted an NFL pass. Pretty amazing I think. Have you EVER seen that before??
-
Browns?
Yeah, but they didn't use their 1st overall pick on him... Johnny Feetball
One more thing. The OP didn't mention Marrone starting out with not 1 QB on the roster who had ever thrown a pass in the NFL.

Lots of rumors that Marrone and Whaley aren't getting along. I haven't seen any confirmation, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me if Marrone is pissed at Whaley.
Think about it:
Marrone is hired to coach a team that had been lousy for many years, with not a huge amount of talent on either side of the ball. There are questions about ownership hanging over everything like a black cloud. And, above all else, the team has no franchise player at the game's most important position. He knows he has three years, at best, to turn the ship around, and this is his one big shot to be an NFL head coach. If he flames out here, he won't likely get another shot.
So what happens? Whaley reaches and gets him a questionable QB in the first round, which means there will be pressure to have him play. They need a veteran QB for security, but Whaley gets him a dud in Kolb, who can't make it past preseason. So now Marrone goes into the first season of his one big chance at NFL head coach with a questionable rookie QB, a barely serviceable backup QB who has no time to learn the offense because he was signed so late, and another rookie QB who really shouldn't be playing against professionals. They enter the season with huge questions at the game's most important position. That's a recipe for failure, and I'm sure Marrone puts most of the blame for that on Whaley.
So they go into the second season of his one big chance at NFL head coach with the same three guys, and guess what? They still aren't very good. The questionable first-round QB still doesn't excel, and the barely serviceable backup QB regresses and is dumped late in the preseason. Whaley sifts through the garbage heap and comes up empty. Then, right before the season begins, he desperately signs a historically mediocre veteran out of "retirement" as a safety measure, who has no time to learn the offense because he was signed so late. There are signs of tension and shouting between Marrone and management, but who could blame him? They enter the season with huge questions at the game's most important position. Things are so bad, the safety measure who barely knows the offense is starting at QB a quarter of the way through the season.
Now the historically mediocre veteran QB is retired, and Marrone is looking at the third season of his one big chance at NFL head coach with only two QBs on the roster -- the questionable first-rounder, who he doesn't have a lot of confidence in, and the third stringer who still shouldn't be playing against professionals. He's looking at yet another season with huge questions at the game's most important position. His three years will be up soon, and in that time Whaley has done him no favors at the QB position. In fact, the only favor he did was to get him a backup-quality QB who wouldn't even stick around more than one season. Twice now, Marrone has had to field QB's who had little experience in the offensive system because they weren't around for minicamp or training camp.
Sure, finding a franchise QB is tough. But yeah, if I was Marrone I wouldn't be too happy with Whaley.
I don't know how anybody could have screwed up the QB situation any worse than Whaley has....
-
Doug, is that you???? Mr. Whaley???
-
Interesting. Jackson also had the slowest 20 yard split at the combine too (3.28 seconds). Jackson, who is 6'3", played guard and has an ideal size for it. You can be less at athletic at that position as long as you can get leverage. CK is slow for a tackle and probably too tall for guard.
Awesome selection with your 2nd overall pick, wouldn't you say?
-
It's pathetic when your second round pick can't even get a single snap the entire season.
+ 1000 BINGO. What the hell is that all about??? With the O line being as BAD as it was...
Maybe they didn't what his arthritic knee to flare up...
-
He said he would trade Marcel Dareus, next year's first and our 1st pick this year for the #1 overall pick this year, in which he would pick Jamies Winston.
But the Sammy trade was too risky ...
You don't trade away picks for receivers.

As GM? 2 years. Been in a coma lately?
Dudes been here for 5 season. You can't absolve him of everything, Wake up call to PTR.
Buffalo Bills[edit]
Doug Whaley was named Assistant General Manager/Director of Pro Personnel of the Buffalo Bills on February 10, 2010. Whaley oversees the team’s Pro Personnel department and assisted General Manager Buddy Nix in all football-related administrative duties and in the college talent evaluation process until Nix stepped down from the General Manager position on May 13, 2013. Whaley became Buffalo's GM three days later.[2]
-
We are discussing Whaley. Whaley was not here 6 years ago.
and HOW long has Whaley been here???
-
Quality GM's don't make the Watkins trade. I like Sammy and I give Whaley credit for having the balls to make that move, but you can't make that trade when your QB's are Manuel, Thad, and Tuel.
+ Again, BINGO. And then all but admit your mistake by waiting until the week before the opening game to cut them lose for Orton.
-
This may come as a shock to you but there is no franchise level QB talent available now. None. Not anywhere. At least nothing the Bills are in a positron to get.
Right. The Bills refused to draft a QB for six (6) years until drafting E.J., and now they are screwed. Again.
-
Now we are really in a hole. We have no first round pick, and Whaley has shown he can't be trusted on choosing/finding a QB. The only solution might be to find the best consultant type scout(s) out there, and task them with the sole objective of identifying viable candidates. One can't leave this to our scouting department alone.
+ 100 %
These guys have NO clue about drafting a QB: none. Even AFTER see E.J. play they believed he was still the guy. And traded away their insurance policy
to get Watkins. Not to mention Tuel and the other guy as backups. Damn.

Brandon will say everyone is coming back, including Hackett, then release him tomorrow. Watch...

Do people understand the concept of league average? I ask that seriously.

One of the best posts I've read. THX RICO.

I actually didn't see this coming, but maybe it's a good thing. We're probably going after Bradford or Cutler in the offseason. I think either one would be a significant upgrade from EJ. Need to sign a couple guards first, though.
Can you imagine Culter behind this line!?!?!? I can't. If this team even thinks about getting Cutler I'm finished for a while...

Anyone thinking this is good news is delusional.
This is AWESOME news. My heart is still racing a bit!!!!

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Good luck to him.
Now let's move on BILLS FANS!!!!!
B-)

Good points, however I see that the O-line has regressed, AND the current OC has done much less with more players than Gailey had.

Watching USC Gamecock OG Cann (#50) mentioned in the article as a possible draft choice. Not in any way an endorement or a scouting report (I've seen him give up some QB hits and I'd never heard of him before today), but it's refreshing to see a guard who can pull and get down field. Giants who can't anchor, pull or get down field remove a lot of options on offense.
Yet I've read the Bills have or had the biggest O-lie in the league?
Who is the best Quarterback coach available?
