  1. What's with people wanting him? Everyone here would be calling for his head if he threw three pics in the teams shot at a playoff spot. If we could get him cheap enough he would be a good stopgap player while we develop a rookie QB either from this draft or next but nothing more than that.

Despite his failures in big games, his still some kind of gigantic upgrade over anything we've had since Kelly. He's got a career QB rating of 95 and interceptions aren't as crazy as you'd think. I can't see him ever winning a SB, but he definitely wins. He's 55-38 as a starter. Looking at available options at QB, I just don't know that there's a better one if we need someone ready to go for next season. Perhaps Alex Smith, but he's an even bigger question mark.

In terms of value, Romo is worth a first rounder - probably just in the second half of it. I think the extreme success of 1st and 2nd year quarterbacks the last two years are part of the reason. If you're holding onto a top 10 pick and need a QB, why trade for a 33 year old guy when young QBs are excelling? The Carson Palmer trade was some kind of miracle for the Bengals, that kind of nonsense isn't happening again.

If we could trade our 1st rounder of next year I'd do it. In theory Romo + a Lovie Smith caliber coach could put us at *at least* 7-9 making a 2013 first rounder in the teen range or worse. I guess I'd probably do it for this year's first rounder, but just not clear yet on who might target at 8.

In the end, I simply don't see the Cowboys letting go of him. Where's their upgrade at QB if they do? I could have seen it if they wanted to jump in the Peyton chase last year, or if perhaps Brees was still an option. As it stands, the reason I'd want him is the same reason the Cowboys wouldn't want to let him go - no bigger QB name available this offseason.

  2. This is a big step forward. RW's accountants are now as far removed from day to day as can be.

Given the extension to Fitz, the resigning of Stevie, the acquisition of Mario and Anderson, the pleas to Cowher and Shanahan, taking care of Freddie, etc - can someone point me to something that says money has been even the slightest factor during the Nix/Gailey regime?

  3. This may make what was a very odd, amorphous situation at 1 Bills Drive much more concrete and known to franchise outsiders.

In other words, this could help bring in a better coach, b/c the overall situation of "how things work" with the Bills is now clarified.

And Brandon did just have dinner with Gruden, didn't he?

The one thing we CAN offer a top shelf coaching candidate is "total control and ability to run your own show".

With this move, maybe that is precisely what they have planned.

This isn't really true. You can offer the ability to run your show TODAY. I don't see how much has really changed - by all accounts Russ was already mostly in charge. He can say it's his team, but it's not - it's Ralph's team. We'll unfortunately be reminded of this somewhere in the not so distant future given his age and apparent health issues in the last year. Then what? A new owner will once again be holding the keys. If there was some sort of succession plan announced as part of this transition, would be a lot more promising for a potential next coach.

  4. what is this based on and when did he say this?

You find an interview, you'll find him gushing about how much he loves Buffalo and/or the Bills. Finding him saying he wants to be the GM directly more difficult, but this is probably the closest. This is from an interview w/ WROC TV (apparently from Rochester) columnist Scott Pitoniak:

“Look, everybody knows how I feel about Buffalo,’’ Polian said, demonstrating some pretty nifty verbal dance steps. “That’s no secret. I’m a Buffalo guy. I loved my time there. I always love coming back. That’s not an issue. But that’s Mr. Wilson’s call, not mine. It’s very difficult for me to even talk about that. And I think the group that’s in there now is doing a nice job. I can now root for teams, and, so, I’m rooting for the Bills and I hope they do wel"

  5. Can we get a list going of everyone that thinks we shouldn't be jumping at the chance to hire Lovie? Maybe we can send them a reminder of what team they root for and our coaching candidates from the past.

Lovie is an excellent choice. Is he a perfect candidate? Maybe not..

but guess who's not coming to Buffalo? A perfect candidate. He is, however, a coach with a ton of experience and success at the NFL level. Find me another coach with two SB appearances, coach of the year honors, a winning NFL HC record, and a strong defensive record that wants to coach in Buffalo.

Our stated goal before getting Gailey was a coach with NFL HC experience and the best guy they could find with interest was Chan. How do we not jump at Lovie?

  6. He might have done us a favor. He said there's a certain look they've seen on tape during our punt returns they knew they could exploit and would if it came up. Sure it's lame, but would much rather have this exposed in a blowout than at in a game when it might have mattered.

Of course I'm saying this as if we might actually go back and correct the issue, which is obviously naive.

  7.

I'm aware of this issue. Finally found the article where Polian seems to say he'd like the job if it was open:

    http://scottpitoniak...s-up-again.html

Scott Pitoniak works for WROC-TV in Rochester, so it's not a bad source. It's intriguing to me because Polian can get another GM job somewhere...GMs with 6 SuperBowl appearances are hard to come by. I'd say he's the highest profile GM that would consider taking the job, son issues aside.

  8. Curious to know what people here think about hiring Bill Polian as GM. I know the common thought is that the Polian/Wilson breakup was so bitter it couldn't happen, but based on many recent interviews with Polian, his Wall of Fame induction and related speech - they've long since patched things up.

So with the idea that it could happen, is this something people here would WANT to happen? Trying to win using regimes from the past usually doesn't work, but I do like the idea of Polian coming in to grab a franchise QB. He's picked some good ones in his past.

  9. I think for me the signing of Mario Williams helped a lot as a Bills fan. It was refreshing to see us not only spend the money, but the total effort to get the deal done. To a lesser extend, the original signing of Merriman was similar in that quite a lot of money was invested in a high risk guy that in the end really turned out to be a waste. The extensions of Stevie Johnson was nice. Freddy Jackson extension seemed like the right thing to do. Their attempts at luring a big name coach was refreshing too; it's unfortunate that didn't pan out. I really enjoy Nix and his direct tone with the fans - this is rare. Not sure if he's the right guy, but I've liked a lot of his moves in the moment despite hindsight proving some of them to be wrong.

In summary, I continue to find the Bills a franchise that I enjoy rooting for. What I've unfortunately discovered, however, is the emotional impact they have on me has faded. I guess years of defeat just equate to a desensitization and numbness. While I was hoping for the win today, after it was over it didn't feel that bad because I knew it might get us closer to a top draft pick. I think we all know this isn't a team that's going to win the Super Bowl. It's highly unlikely to be a team that makes the playoffs. I still believe we're not going to be that team without a franchise QB draft pick. One of these years we need to suffer through a 3-13 year to get there, maybe this will be it. I know that'd help get a coach in the door too.

Where I differ with the poster is I can't see myself actually following the team any less. It just doesn't hurt as much anymore. This idea of hoping the team moves is crazy to me too...I still hope one day the pieces come together and we get to see a Super Bowl win. Have no idea if it will ever happen, but I'd never wish for something that would make it impossible.

  10. 3 weeks ago in the second half the Eagles exposed how weak the Cards o-line was with increased pressure and blitzes. Blown out in the first half, the Eagles held ARI to just 3 points in the second half. MIA exploited the weakness the following weak recording 8 sacks, and STL continued the trend last week absolutely dominating the Card's oline and recording 9 sacks.

The off-season d-line champion Buffalo Bills get a chance to prove their worth against a horrible o-line that's given up 17 sacks in 2 weeks. If there's a perfect match-up to get them off the mat, this is it.
