  1. He dropped the ball a lot in college, and he showed that he can drop the ball in the pros. Living here in Raleigh, the NC State faithful were driven crazy by his drops in college. I hope he overcomes this problem, otherwise all his speed will be wasted by bad hands. Have not given up on him yet, but he will need to prove it with action on the field.

  2. I found a sample Wonderlic Test online....took it using my mobile phone, while drinking my third beer, and scored a 24.....and my sample test only had 25 questions. These guys aren't that bright, but I guarantee they are all better football players than I ever was.

  3. Yes:

A Drew Bledsoe Bills Jersey to Gillete Stadium for a Sunday Night game that the Bills got destroyed. Bledsoe started the game, Losman finished the game. Good natured ribbing, nothing too bad.

Bills Jersey to a game in Charlotte NC against the Panthers...no problems...awful game...think we won 10-7...a classic Trent Edwards performance.

Bills Jersey to Met Life stadium two years ago against the Giants. We had them beat, and then it became clear that Firz couldn't get the ball to his receivers down field and they took the ball and the game from us. Good fun going back and forth with the Giants fans...no problems.

  4. With the 8th pick I want the Bills to go with the first QB taken in the draft. Geno would be my pick. If the QB the Bills most covet is gone at 8, then they should take the best LB available. Barkevious Mingo LB would seem to be a good fit.

If no QB in RD 1 I hope there is a QB worth drafting with our second pick. That seems as likely as not given the team needs of Jax, KC, ARI, and Phi. However if we don't go QB round 1, it might be a draft where we fail (again) to get a possible QB of the future.

If no QB available then take the higher rated player at WR or TE with second pick.

    O Line for third pick.

Beyond that hope for the best.

Exactly. What are the negatives? This move just gives us options. It really opens up our options in the draft most importantly because now the Bills arent forced to reach for a guy. I dont think he is the answer for a franchise qb, but who knows how good he could actually be? He played behind a terrible O line in AZ and Philly. At one point, he was a hot commodity around the NFL. He didnt stand a chance in AZ. But again, he wasnt signed to be the answer at QB, just a move to give us more options.

With only 6 picks in the 2013 draft and a common agreement among scouts and gms alike that this qb class is weak, it gives the front office options. There is an option to trade back and pick up more draft picks. Most importantly, the Bills will not be forced to draft a qb way ahead of what the guy is valued at.

I for one think Geno Smith and Matt Barkley will both be busts in the NFL. Geno might have the tools, but he is not a leader and sat on the sidelines w his head down during games when his team was down. He doesnt have "it". So now that the Bills have Kolb they can take a risk in round 2, 3, or later on a guy who has a higher ceiling and needs more polish.

Personally, I think the Bills will be drafting Ryan Nassib. The current coaching staff already has 4 years of work under their belt with this guy. That working relationship alone adds serious value. The communication and understanding between coach and quarterback after 4 years of working together gives Nassib a huge head start.

I agree with your post, with the possible exception of Geno Smith. I say possible because I only have access to the same film and same scouting reports that we all have seen. He certainly has the measurables in regards to size, arm strength and speed. His pocket presence at times looked fantastic. However, I can make no judgements of the other factors that would make him thrive or flop in the NFL. Hopefully, the Bills FO can.

The signing of Kolb is good in that it gives us flexibility in the draft, and we don't have to take whatever QB is available in the first round. I think we would have been in a worse position as a team if we went into the draft with T Jackson as our top QB on the depth chart. That's how teams end up forced to draft someone like Christian Ponder or Blaine Gabbert in the first round and then have to start them.

If they do not draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd, rest assured it is because they didn't like anyone that was available. The worst that could happen taking one early this year and next is definitely not that you could end up with two good ones. It is that you could still wind up with no good ones and nothing to show for two high picks. Of course picks at other positions can be missed on too, but I am certain that if they think any QB available has a reasonable chance of being good, they will nab one. If they don't take one early, it is safe to say that they didn't like any of the ones available at their picks

The problem is that our front office has "not liked" a lot of decent QBs for the past several drafts. This has left us drafting no one significant ( my apologies to Levi Brown) at the most significant position in football. Someone drafted at QB in the first two rounds of this years draft will be an above average starter, perhaps a great starter in the NFL. Our front office better find a way to "like" him and draft him.

  7. I hope the Bills picked up Kolb in an attempt to avoid having to reach for a QB at number 8 if the top two QBs are off the board. If Geno and Barkley ( or whoever they have at number two) are gone by the time they pick then they can take the best WR, OL, or LB that suits them. They could even try to trade down in first round, hope to grab a QB from their next tier of QBs, and then pick up some extra picks.

So I hope Kolb is a bridge to the 2013 draft.

  8. Lol, with the Kolb signing this board is as bipolar as ever...people predicting the first pick in the draft next year to people thinking it was a good move. Add that in to all the bipolar feelings of the other moves and its chaos in most threads lol. So lets take a look at whats really gone down, why, and where they can go from here objectively.

1 - Our own FA's...Most agree Bills made an intelligent decision choosing to prioritize Byrd over Levitre. Byrd is a more talented player and many believe one of the 3 best FS in football, and some think the top dog overall. Levitre, a very good player for us, was going to be over paid and the Bills made a smart decision not to bite on it. Look at all the huge FA signings for guards...they never work out and only really hurt the cap. This was a the better move moving forward. Rhinehart would have been nice, but he was nothing special and was paid more than he was worth. Guards are right there with RB's as one of the more easier positions to find good players. Choice was also kept, which I like as he is good depth, depth we will need if FJ cant stay healthy again.

2 - QB...best move of the off season was to cut Fitz. He was not the answer and was only holding this franchise back from truly going into a new direction under the new regime. Resigning TJ was a good move and a cheap price as he would be a solid backup and an upgrade over Pigpen. The newest move is Kolb...on the surface this is very ehhhhh, but the reality is that this was a solid signing considering what is available in the draft and FA market. What this signing does for the Bills is allow them NOT to be forced into reaching for a QB at #8, which is the best part of this add. It gives them the freedom to go BPA at 8 rather than reach for need. Same goes for rounds 2 and 3. Worst case scenario, TJ and Kolb battle it out and we ride with one until next draft year where the QB class is believed to be stronger (and we would likely still have a top half first round pick) and we use this one to take advantage of the depth of the draft at D front 7, WR, TE, and OL.

3 - LB...Lawson I think for the most part is seen as a very solid move for this D as he fills an important need of a LB who can drop back in coverage. Just a good all around move in my book. That being said, another addition of a good vet like Dansby would really help solidify this unit going into the draft. Add in a young stud prospect (maybe at 8 like Ogletree, Jarvis, or some slight chance Teo slips to the 2nd) and we can have a D with a lot of potential again under our new regime.

4 - WR...This was addition by subtraction as we didn't add anyone, but we also didn't use cap money to retain guys that really were not play makers. I am probably in the minority here, but I still think Easley has some potential and could be a surprise player this camp. But more importantly, I think the Bills most certainly grab a WR in the first or 2nd. The Kolb signing makes this even more likely given they no longer have to reach for a QB. I would not be surprised the first 2 rounds to go LB & WR or vice versa. I would love Jarvis then Hunter personally if someone like Geno/Barkley isnt there at 8 (which I don't think either will be).

Overall Picture...I think this team is headed in the right direction right now. They didnt over spend on this roster where it likely wouldn't have made much difference next year given the lack of QB stability anyway. They have positioned themselves to not have to reach in the draft, and if we hit on a few picks then next off season this could be a team on the rise with cap room to be a player in FA and a lot fewer holes to fill. So while many are all doom and gloom, I think the FO has actually made some smart moves this off season. I would still love to add a FA guy like Dansby and maybe a G or WR too after the draft to help round the roster out a bit more, but there is still time for that and plenty of solid players on the market still who's price is only going to continue to go down from here on out.

    My Off Season Grade: B

I agree with your overall picture of the Bills off season. I think the combination of the past 13 years has put a lot of Bills fans in a state of perpetual agitation and it comes out in the posts.

The Bills are well positioned now to take the best player available at pick 8. It could be Geno or Barkley if they are available or the best LB, WR or OL they have on their board. With Kolb on the roster they don't have to take the third QB taken in the draft at pick 8. This would have been drafting for need rather than taking the best player they could. Also, it allows them the potential of trading into lower part of first round and taking a QB there and gaining some extra picks.

If they fail to draft a QB early (first two rounds) I will be more concerned. As many have posted they may be well served to take one early this year, and if need be, next year. What's the worst that happens we end up with two good young QBs?! Then we trade one of them down the line for other needs. With the new rookie cap drafting QBs early is like buying stocks low with the potential to sell high.

The only part of the OP I disagree with is the grade. I would give them a "C". Average for now, but a higher grade is within their reach with a good draft and 2-3 more free agent pick ups.

Thanks for the well thought out OP.

  9. Signing Kolb is a good move for the Bills as long as:

    1. The Bills front office doesn't view Kolb as the long term solution

    2. The Bills front office drafts the top QB prospect with their 8th pick (if 2 QBs aren't already off the board)

    3. The Bills front office takes the best QB on the board with their second round pick if they don't take a QB in first round

I have read some posts comparing Kolb to Brees at similar points of their early careers. Even if this proves to be true, San Diego was still smart enough to take a QB number 1 overall (Eli Manning) and ultimately trade him to get Rivers and a bunch of picks from NYG.

So at the end of the day, signing Kolb could be a great move to help solidify the QB position in many ways. However, we will have to trust the Bills front office to do the right thing with the position during this year's, and possibly next year's draft.

Unfortunately for us Bills fans, the Bills front office has given us no reason to place trust in them for the past 13 years. Maybe this is the front office that gets it right.

  10. I like this signing a lot. He will end up costing half what Fitz would have cost and will be at least as effective (more so IMO). But more importantly, This gives the bills flexibility in the draft. No longer do they NEED to draft a starting QB, nor do they need to start the rookie right away, regardless of whether he's ready.

Obviously, they should still draft a QB as Kolb isnt the next Jim Kelly, but I doubt they reach for one with the 8th pick now, and that's a good thing. Assuming that Geno is gone at #8, I'd be very happy if they pick WR or LB in the first, best QB available at 40, and WR or LB (whichever position wasn't taken in the 1st) in the 3rd round. Round out the draft with a CB, G, and another LB

Even better would be trading back. Trading say from 8 to 20 would give them two second and two third rounders, giving them 5 picks in the first three rounds.

    +1

  11. Long time Bills fan, and have been living in Raleigh, NC for the past 15 years. I follow Notre Dame passionately but admittedly I am no expert on college football. However, I do get to see a lot of the NC State games and they are the dominant local coverage for sports radio and newspaper when it comes to football. From what I have seen, and from what avid NC State fans have told me I hope that we don't waste a pick on Mike Glennon. In game situations he doesn't effectively push the ball down field, rather he often looks like a big, strong armed version of Captain Checkdown Trent Edwards. He has all the measurables and a great arm (so much so that they willingly let Russel Wilson transfer to Wisconsin), but unlike R.Wilson he does not appear to rise to the occasion during the game.

I hope one of the other QBs work out for us, it's been too long since we have had excellent QB play. I just hope we don't take Glennon.

  12. Admittedly, I have not seen Doug Marrone coach a single football game. Living in NC (originally from Rochester) for the past 15 years creates an entirely different collegiate base market of television games. However, I have seen every Bills game over the past 13 years (Sunday Ticket) and lots of other NFL games including those coached by Wisenhunt and L. Smith. It was with relief that I read we did not hire a recently terminated NFL head coach such as these two gentlemen. They both are knowledgable, competent coaches and have forgotten more about football than I will ever know. However, it seems that they were unable make meaningful in game adjustments or off season adjustments to place their teams in a position to progress and win during a game, during a season, or from season to season. I readily agree that this is more true of Wisenhunt than of L. Smith, but L. Smith put an offense out there first coached by M. Martz that was a passing attack without the necessary WR's or O Lineman, then replaced M. Martz and still couldn't figure out a way to protect J. Cutler.

Personally, I thought a Greg Roman or Bruce Arians may have been the best candidates we could hire given their NFL experience but perhaps they didn't want anything to do with the job the Bills were offering.

Marrone is a distinctly different HC hire than Gailey (who I didn't like from the start), from Jauron (who caused me to almost give up on the team when he was hired), and even from Wade Phillips. Wade Phillips is a classic example of the "Peter Principle" in which excellence in a certain area gets you promoted to the level of your incompetence. Coach Phillips is a hall of fame level defensive coordinator, and a below average NFL HC.

I dont know what we have in Marrone, and none of us will know for sure until next season, but at least we are moving in a different direction with this hire than any we have tried over the past 13 years. It may fail miserably, it may succeed wildly, but at least we aren't repeating the time worn mistakes of the past 13 years.

    Go BIlls!

  13. Since the departure of Bill Polian, and the all too brief tenure of Jerry Butler, we have brought in a parade of third rate GM's that have been unable to competently build the team through the draft and/or free agency. Further, the other constant has been that our under talented roster has been coached by people who were not up to the task of head coach in the NFL. One thing that has not changed in the past 13 seasons is that we have been under talented and poorly coached.
