    Bills Sign Running Back

    WGR Newsroom - Monday, March 12, 2007 - 1:50 PM

The Bills running back situation is starting to sort itself out. The club has signed unrestricted free agent back Anthony Thomas.

Thomas joined the Bills last year after starting his career in Chicago where he played for current Bills coach Dick Jauron. He appeared in all 16 games last season and made two starts. Thomas replaced Willis McGahee in week nine after McGahee suffered an injury. He ran for a game-high 109 yards on 28 carries against the Indianapolis Colts.

Thomas, right now, would be the starter at running back. But the Bills continue to talk with the agent for running back Chris Brown, who visited with the team last week.

    :worthy: But why?!

IF we got chris brown too, would we seriously be content with brown/thomas/willaims/jackson backfied?! i still think we would draft a RB, but adding brown just makes the RB position crowded with a bunch of backups IMO. Not to mention the waste of money that'd be!

I'd much rather see a backfield with Irons/A-train/Williams and or Jackson and use the money you'd give Brown on someone/something else (i.e. CB or LB)

Granted this is just WGR and who knows if we're seriously pursuing him or not, but here's hoping that it doesn't work out!

    why?

because Chris Brown has a lot more upsise that A-Train. He has more speed and catches better. His downside is that he has not been able to stay healthy. He would fine as part of a rotation with the hope he stays healthy.

Bills should sign Brown and draft a RB on day 1.

  2. two things:

    1. I didn't mean to imply that i would take it. I was thinking as i was writing and must have thought it a good idea when i wrote "i think the answer is yes..." Must have been a spur of the moment thing that i didn't realize i was doing. From my other posts on this board and even within the text of this post, I've made it pretty clear that i'm all for going strong on defense on day one and that taking a RB first round would be ridiculous, especially Lynch. That said, If Peterson, who IMO, is a step above Lynch and two steps above everyone else, fell to us at 12 I don't think you could pass him up. AND this thread was just to throw the idea out, would be try to move up a few spots if he started to fall... I think it's an intersting question and one that you have to think about.... But indeed, it was my mistake to say that I would. My intention was to leave my opinion out of it and just pose the question to everyone, so my bad...

    2. You wouldn't be giving up 3 first day picks for a RB, you'd be giving up two. Where it's true that you'd trade your 1st and two thirds to get someone elses first, in reality, simple math says you're giving up two picks (3-1=2). Essentailly you're swapping firsts and giving up two thrids. So it's not Dicta-like becuase you're giving up only two picks w/ realtively low value. Put it another way our second round pick is worth 470 points and our two thrids together are worth 352 (220 +132). So really you'd be giving up less then a second in value. So, even though i wouldn't do it... it's not impossible or crazy as some would suggest...

    Stop with the semantics.

In your scenario, you are using 3 picks on 1 player.

Instead of picking 3 bodies to help your team, you have 1 - and an injury riddled one at that.

Those "low value" 3rd rounders should become 2 starters.

With all the holes the Bills have, it is stupid to use 3 picks on a RB.

  3. Correction:

You TRADE DOWN to a team desperate for a RB and collect an extra 2nd.

Then draft Willis later in the first.

That desparate team would be the BILLS.

there is no team with less at the RB spot than us.

We could probably give up next year's #1 to move up to take the #12 pick fron us in this year's draft.

Teflon Tom would jump on this deal.

  4. Whatever we do at MLB, I think we will miss London this year. IMO, he's the biggest loss for the Bills this offseason. He called the plays, set the tempo and made the tackles.

I can live with losing Nate...too much $$ for the Bills. I think the Wills trade will help the Bills. I just think we could have re-signed Fletcher for the $$ he got in DC.

    But...I'm trusting in Marv.

sure we could have re-signed him.

and we would have another year of poor run support from the MLB.

we will get better run support for less money without him.

  5. I don't doubt that you heard this but my guess it was before both he an Okoye worked out at the combine. Why?

Because they posted nearly identical 10, 20 and 40 yd times and Branch would be the ideal DT in the cover 2 because of his combination of size, agility and strength.

If his measureables are so good, then 11 teams won't pass on such a versatle stud.

Miami may reach for Brown since they have no OL left, but highly doubt that Ginn and Hall go top 12. More likely Laron Landry is 1st DB off the board

  6. Not in his rookie year.

If the Bills draft Willis with the idea of starting him at MLB we likely will see a drop off in production compared to F-B playing this role simply because Fletch brought a decade of seeing NFL plays develop to the position, while Willis though a better natural tackler than F-B and probably able to run the field better will simply have to go through what is likely to be a painful learning process for a while.

This appears even more likely after watching Willis struggle in pass coverage against premier college talent in the Senior Bowl.

I think Willis is a very good player (he won the Butkus trophy as the best LB in college football) and likely will solidify the MLB slot for years. However, folks are simply fooling themselves if they do not think that opposing OCs will be salivating at the possibilities of facing a rookie MLB in the Tampa 2 scheme.

If they get his to misread a run and get him to take his first step backward then there may be a first down in the offing and if they get him to take a first step in with a speedy WR running a post pattern then it may well be seven for the other team.

Sliding Crowell over to MLB (his natural position he was drafted to play) as Marv talked about and then taking a player like Timmons (who is higher rated than Willis in most mock drafts) wou;d seem to make a lot more sense than picking Willis.

Despite the impossibility of starting a rookie at MLB, I believe the Bears drafted Urlacher as a safety, changed his position to MLB and started him in the cover- 2 in his rookie year.

    Pure blasphemy :flirt:

You obtain your studs in the draft.

If Willis is a stud in the making, they draft him with the intent to start him. If he can't hack MLB as a rookie (which I doubt), they start him at Spikes spot.

  7. According to Rotoworld :

    http://www.rotoworld.com/content/HeadLines.aspx?sport=NFL

    Aggressive Patriots land Donte' Stallworth

Patriots agreed to terms with WR Donte' Stallworth on a six-year contract.

The deal is worth $30 million, including roughly $12 million guaranteed, according to ESPN. This is the second player believed to be in the NFL's substance-abuse program that New England has signed this offseason (also Sammy Morris). He gives Tom Brady a deep threat to start opposite Reche Caldwell with Wes Welker in the slot, but Stallworth's fantasy numbers may not improve in the Patriots' receiver committee. Mar. 11 - 9:54 am et

Once again this put us behind the game. They are going to give the division a serious run once again. Here we sit dead in the water, waiting to rebuild our franchise. We better say screw that cap to cash BS. Otherwise we'll never compete in this division.

save us the bother and start visiting the Patriots board.

a lot less aggravation for everyone

  8. To me what is odd is SOMEBODY has not been signed because of the WM trade....

I myself am being patient but from a PR standpoint I am suprised the bills haven't signed somebody to appease the masses....Chris Brown, A Train, SOMEBODY

I myself would be perfectly fine with A Train we could then groom a young back in the draft....

I LOVE the way A train runs

they should sign Brown, Atrain and draft a rookie

If Brown stays healthy, he can be a dynamic back both running and receiving.

unfortunately you can not rely on him due to his injury history so you need the Atrain.

  9. just asking a question............did the staff expect takeo to be 100%.i thought he was decent knowing how severe of a injury he came back from.and last season he hurt his hamstrings but wouldnt another off season only make him stronger?now that london is gone i think takeo is the leader of our defense unless someone else steps forward.

you don;t pay $5 mil per year for decent'

that's what you get from a 2nd day pick.

a day one pick will be an upgrade for a fraction of hte cost.

  10. I really try to avoid falling into the trap of fantasy-land draft scenarios, and I've previously thought and said that trading into the top 5 for Peterson would cost too much and would set the organization back, a la Herschel Walker and the Vikings.

But it's eating at me now.

I've seen a good number of Peterson's games on TV. When the guy is healthy, no joke, he reminds me of OJ with the way he runs. If health wasn't a concern, I think he'd be rated the #1 player in the entire draft, or at least a close #2 behind Calvin Johnson. He seems to have a great attitude and is intelligent. He runs HARD, as in he runs over defenders even when he could run around them. He's Lawrence Maroney but faster. He's Larry Johnson without the psychosis. He's the real deal, and as much as I think the Bills need help at a ton of positions and thus need all the draft picks they can get, I can't shake the idea that this guy could instantly transform the franchise into a competitor.

Plus, I'm beginning to suspect the Browns may decide to take Quinn. I know they only signed Jamal Lewis for 1 year, but they haven't had a real QB in ages, and they would be widely applauded for taking Quinn at #3 (or trading down to take him) and then someone like Michael Bush with their high second round pick. And if the Browns pass, I'm not sure who else in the top 8 would take Peterson, although I suspect both the Cardinals (despite Edge) and the Vikings (despite Taylor) would have a hard time passing on him. But the window might be there.

Now, the question I have is what would it cost for the Bills to move into the top 5 or 8 to take Peterson if the Browns pass? Anyone proficient in draft value analyses?

Thoughts? Damn, I hate these Madden-like scenario threads, but again, the Peterson Possibility is really starting to gnaw at me.

Lynch's all around skills fit the prototype of what FAirchild wants in a back better than Peterson- who is a better pure runner.

Highly doubt Bills trade up for a one dimensional player- no matter how good he is.

  11. I dont think so. Im pretty confident they could draft Lynch @ 12 & he would be the opening day starter & the results would be pretty good. If Lynch is there @ 12 which I think he will be you grab him. I watch alot of Pac 10 football, believe me when I tell you he is that good.

too bad he won't be running against Pac10 defenses in the NFL :(

  12. No matter what you think about last year's draft, good or bad, one thing that can't be denied is that Marv fooled us all. No one was talking about Whitner and McCargo last March.

Last year we were all talking about DT's Ngata and Bunkley. This year we seem to be coagulating en masse around the idea of either a RB or an ILB with much of the talk surrounding Marshawn Lynch and Patrick Willis. Using last year as a guide though, maybe we should expect a surprise or two from Marv.

What are the potential surprises he could pull off? What could he do that would make you say "What the f...!?!?!?!"

My top candidate for a surprise pick, at least a surprise around here, would be a TE in the first or second round. Remember that Ronnie Harmon like brain seizure Royal had when he stepped out of bounds at the back of the endzone in the most critical foul up of the whole season? Bet you Marv hasn't forgotten. Greg Olsen from Miami, a TE with WR speed will certainly be there at 12. He is projected to go in the bottom half of the first or top half of the second, is he this year's Whitner? Maybe Zach Miller, Ben Patrick or Matt Spaeth in the second?

    [/quote

even after cutting ties with Willis, we have a full quota of overhyped, underperforming players from the U.

Olsen's time may be fast for a TE, but he plays more as a slow oversized WR since he can't block.

    no thanks

  13. I know the Bills have needs, I know they need a big receiver for the red zone. I know. But watch the Youtube highlights. They could use a receiver. If you go best player available, biggest impact.....Maybe I'm high.

    yes you are

  14. RD1 (12): RB Marshawn Lynch (Cal)

RD2 (43): CB Marcus McCauley (Fresno St)

RD3 (74): ILB Zak DeOssie (Brown) Another Ivy Leaguer

RD3 (93): DT Paul Soliai (Utah)

    OR

RD1 (12): DT Omobie Okoye (Louisville)

RD2 (43): RB Kenny Irons (Auburn)

RD3 (74): CB Eric Wright (UNLV) Possible character issues

RD3 (93): ILB Anthony Waters (Clemson)

Personally, If we're going to get a CB, it should be in rd 2. I think the talent drops off too much after that.

\McCauley is the anti-cover 2 CB. He is lost in zone coverage.

  15. *This assumes we sign Chris Brown/A-Train/Dillon to be the main guy in a RB by committee. It also assumes that Marshawn Lynch is available when we are on the clock at #12.

RD1: Trade down with NYG for their RD1 (20) and RD2 (51)...(this evens out nicely on the all-powerful value chart so don't worry). Giants need a RB so maybe they want Lynch. Our selection: CB Darrelle Revis (Pitt)

RD2 (43): ILB Buster Davis (FSU)

RD2 (51): DT Quinn Pitcock (Ohio St)

RD3 (74): I'd go RB here...depending on who's available 1. Tony Hunt (PSU) 2. Darius Walker (ND) 3. Lorenzo Booker (FSU)

RD3 (93): OG Manuel Ramirez (Texas Tech)...I've seen him as high as mid-2nd and as low as 4th, so who knows?

This would give us a legit CB, a young replacement for MLB, a RB to complete the committee as well as some help on both lines.

    Thoughts?

Buster Davis is too small- they just rid of the same player.

Pitcock is another Ohio State overhyped DT- we still have the same guy in Anderson.

    Hunt probably goes 2nd round

  16.

yeah- like any NFL team, will be telling Pastabelly who they really want on draft day. :P

More likely they are playing the talking heads for the fools that they are to disseminate misinformation.

It would be to Houston's benefit to feign interest in Quinn so someone will be compelled to trade ahead of the Texans to take him allowing someone like Jamaal Anderson to slide to #8 to Houston.
