What does he mean Van Nuys which is the Rams?  Their training camp is in Irvine which is like 60-70 miles away.

The stadium is in south central area of Los Angeles....not very close to Van Nuys.

Van Nuys is where private planes fly into, rather than the much busier LAX. That could be the connection. Maybe someone is just extrapolating of some Flight Aware data.

  2. Shelton was a beast during Monday morning's practice. Constantly in backfield shaking off single and double teams. Yelling and talking tons of smack the whole time too. Wood and Incognito couldn't handle him the majority of the time. He's going to be a special player.

I realize plenty here are using this to draw conclusions about our OL, which is certainly fair to do, but I'd say the real takeaway is simply that Shelton was outstanding. I was really impressed.

  3. I'm not going to quote everything in here but I'm gonna have to disagree with Bob. Wednesday was my first camp visit this year, so I can't speak for how EJ looked the rest of camp, but he was absolutely terrible last night. He had a couple nice throws, but too many that were way off the mark. He has seemingly regressed from last year. All the qbs faced a ton of pressure, so that's no excuse.

I like Trapasso, but he's not looking at EJ objectively. I was standing near the infamous tent and the WR had no chance even if he turned his head - it was way too high and wide. About 3 snaps later, EJ sailed another just as high and wide toward the goal line on the opposite side of the tent. He might've been throwing that one away since the pocket collapsed, but it's hard to give him the benefit of the doubt with so many other awful throws. EJ might have developed the yips- I can't think of any other reason why he's seemingly regressed so much.

Anyway, here are the rest of my thoughts that I jotted down for my buddies in an email. Obviously not as detailed as Astro's, so please don't mind the typos etc, I'm just copying and pasting:

ej was horrible. Like worse than Simms. Who was also trash. But like neatly bagged trash at the curb. Ej otoh was stankin wet litter in the middle of the street that fell off the back of the truck the day after the Italian festival.
Tyrod is exciting and I hope he's the starter bc cassell just looks like a backup. Nothing terrible but nothing special and no zip on the ball.
The d line and all the backups are beasts. They were in backfield all night. Especially Mario n Hughes hashtag duh
Marcus Easley was balling. I know he should stick for special teams but he should see time at wr.
Screen game looks dangerous. Shady juked someone out of his shorts. Karlos looks like different breed. Like obv not AP level but looks like a dude no one wants to tackle.

Marquise gray making plays too. Woods n oleary had drops. Goodwin had an ill spin move. 17 has wheels too.
  4. a lot of high school teams have found success with converting their RB to QB. the threat of the run sucks the defense in and then the RB can just shuttle toss the ball down field at that point to get it to the wide open receiver, doesn't even have to be a spiral.

Fred would be the best QB on the team. make it happen!

  5. Good article related to this topic. Yes, it's bleacher report, but it's written by Mike Freeman, who is an outstanding writer. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2486218-banned-but-bountiful-marijuana-coveted-by-nfl-players-as-invaluable-painkiller

The players interviewed, as well as several assistant coaches, said they believe the NFL and union have a "wink-wink type deal," as one player put it, where both sides actually don't want tougher marijuana testing because they believe so many players would flunk tests. (The NFL and union deny any type of secret arrangement.)

"If you tested the players during the season every week," one assistant coach said, "we wouldn't be able to field a league. We'd have to merge with the CFL."

  6. The problem with putting Bradham and Alonso on the edges is that neither can rush the passer. The RE in 43 under needs to be a speed rush type of player, like Chris Clemons was in SEA the last few years.

    43 under personnel is typically

    1 NT (Dareus)

2 300+ DL (Kyle Williams, Stefan Charles or Mario)

    1 speed rusher type DE(Hughes)

1 34 OLB type (right now this could be Hughes or Mario, but none of our other LBs fit this profile because they can't rush the QB. Think Bruce Irvin in SEA as the ideal here)

1 Run stopping MLB (Brown or Spikes)

1 athletic coverage LB (Alonso or Bradham)

I would think they put Hughes and Mario on the edges. 3 man line inside with Kyle Williams, Dareus, and Charles(remember how important Alan Branch was in this role last year). And Alonso and Brown as your other two LBs.

yeah I agree with that too, that's how i set it up in madden lol - I just flip it so either hughes or mario play the role of OLB and the other is the DE depending how the offense lines up.

I do think kiko and bradham can rush the passer - obviously not as well as hughes or mario - but enough to get the job done. since they are able to cover i like the versatility bc unlike mario or hughes, they aren't as much of a liability in coverage. Also i just have a hunch they're going to lose Hughes.

If they keep hughes, they can let spikes walk since I think kiko/brown/bradham can carry the weight with dareus kyle mario hughes up front.

  7. Do people even understand what they are typing when they talk about us switching to a 3-4 now that we hired Rex?

Did people not watch this defense 2 years ago under Pettine?

did you not watch the defense under pettine? their base formation was a 4-3 under. EDIT: apologies- I misread the exchange above

it may have looked like a 3-4 but that's only bc the strongside lb would be at the line of scrimmage like this:

    pettagram_medium.png

we went through this the past 2 years. get your best front 7 players on the field and there's no need to really worry about who is a de or who is an olb. all the fronts are more or less "hybrids" anyway.

I imagine they'd like to re-sign spikes. have mario-dareus-kyle on the line in the middle, have bradham and kiko on the edges, and spikes and brown in the middle. sub spikes in db heavy packages. i'm assuming hughes is gone.

  8. The AP article stated he was assisting. He just needs to focus on selling tickets. Too many cooks in the kitchen.

I agree altho "assisting" could mean anything.

I just don't like how the FO kept harping how the "football" dept is empowered to make decisions and etc, and now Brandon is reported to have some sort of influence on a "football" decision.

And I like Brandon in general, just don't get why this would come out immediately after/simultaneously after Whaley was seemingly given a vote of confidence form ownership. Not that RB and DW would be at odds necessarily, it just muddies the hierarchy I assume they meant to clarify by announcing Whaley would be leading the search.

  9. Do the Pegulas not need to come and out make sort of statement about the structure moving forward?

I would think that would be essential in getting a "hot" candidate to commit here.

Sometrhing along the lines"whaley GM with an extension, Brandon Business Guy, both report to Kim...no czar or consultant planned"

As long as that's clear to the candidates, I don't think they need to make an announcement. Altho it would certainly put us fans at ease.
