  1. Had a very unexpected encounter this weekend, and thought I'd share and see who's got their own weird tales to tell.

I spent the last weekend working a festival in Delaware. While walking across the stage during one band's set, someone stops me, looks at my hat (wearing a Bills hat), and asks if I'm from Buffalo. I told him I was from Rochester, but my family is from Buffalo and I'm a big Bills fan. He gives me a big smile, shakes my hand, gives me his card, and introduces himself as Tony - as in Tony King.

Maybe not a huge name in terms of the Bills' history, but I thought that was pretty cool (and entirely unexpected). You never know who you'll bump into!

Who have you run into out of the blue? Did they spot you, or did you spot them?

  2. I used (or tried to use) game rewind exclusively last year. I was on tour and had shows every Sunday up until Week 16, so that was the perfect way to catch up on the games from various hotel rooms - and a fraction of the price of having to pay for a live service!

That said, if I'm not touring during the regular season this year and a non-exclusive, non-console linked service were to come into play, I'd definitely be tempted. No backer bar within 90 minutes one-way :(

  3. Hi guys,

Rochester native, currently on tour with the morning off and staying right in downtown Los Angeles. Does anyone know of a bar that would be likely to put on the Bills/Pats game at the same time that the Chargers game is on? I can't make it to the Backers bar in Santa Monica - not enough time before I have to get to the gig - so someplace near the hotel (close to the L.A. Public Library) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any tips!!

  4. Link works if you take out the period at the end.

I'm almost glad I'm on tour for the rest of the year...I'd be extremely tempted to sign up for this if I was going to be home to watch the games. But since I'm not, $40 for Game Rewind is going to let me catch up on the games on my limited downtime later in the week.

Curious to see if anyone here will actually pay the $250 versus using streaming sites (including XSLive) or asking friends in the WNY market to use a Slingbox to send the games their way. For me, I think I would be able to justify the cost/quality versus having to use pirate sites or seek out a bar, drive a lot, severely limit the number of drinks I can have...yeah, the convenience might be worth the cost.

  5. It doesn't make sense that you can vote and get drafted but can't enjoy a cold beer once in a while.

This kills me...everyone uses this argument like it's a great idea.

No one is disturbed by the fact that the age at which you can be sent to war and die in a foreign country is lower than the drinking age? It's always the other way around? Screw it. Keep making 'em wait until they're 21 before they can drink, and raise the age at which you can decide you're going to take an assault rifle and go get shot at.

  6. The commentator who was on with Vic Carucci was talking about the mental aspect of the game, specifically QBs...I was then shocked to hear him say Gilmore was a guy he thought should have been a "late first rounder," implying he doesn't think he has it upstairs.

Am I the only person here who's even remotely curious as to how this makes the OP think that a player is being called unintelligent? Sounds to me like the commentator was saying that he didn't feel Gilmore had the athletic intuition of a player drafted so highly - I don't get where "not intelligent" comes from.

  7. I've always been a fan of the blackout rule. Perhaps my view as a [for all intents and purposes] life-long season ticket holder is skewed, but I've always felt that if you want to guarantee that you'll see the game, you need to buy a ticket. If you don't buy a ticket, you have no right to complain if you can't see it.

    Fair enough; I'll play along.

    1) We live in a media-based society. Events that draw tens of thousands of spectators are expected to be televised. Hell, community access channels cover high school football games. A major network can't carry a single local NFL game once a week? I realize we aren't entitled to that coverage, but in this day and age, it's difficult to accept a blackout.

    2) Not everyone can afford tickets. Let's say there's a family of four. Dad's got a low paying job while mom stays home so she can be home with the kids when they're not in school. Dad wants to watch the game with his kids, since they both like the team. Problem is, they live two hours from the stadium. Instead of having to shell out for tickets, gas, parking, and stadium food, why not let them flip on the TV, plug the antenna in, and watch the home team?

    3) Not everyone lives in an area where tickets are feasible. I don't live in New York State anymore, but I have a lot of friends who do. On the few Sundays when I'm even at home, Sunday Ticket isn't an option since I can't get dish. Most weeks, I'm in a hotel in some other state anyway. However, I have friends back home who have Slingboxes, and they fire up the box every Sunday so I can tune in. If the game's blacked out, there's my only option thrown out the window.

So, do I have a right to complain? No, I guess not. But is there a reasonable expectation that I should be able to spend three hours of my Sunday afternoons watching a football game without the unavailable time and money necessary to get into a seat in the stadium? I sure believe so, and I doubt I'm alone.

  8. I'd say it's worth it. Though it may be a little more strenuous schedule-wise, I'd try to make it to a night practice. More actual gameplay = a little more of a glimpse at how the players work in play situations, instead of a larger focus on independent position-specific skills that you'll get at the regular morning or afternoon camps.
