I keep hearing that the bills want to move on from Tyrod given what his option would do to our already strapped salary cap position for the next couple of years. In addition, there are reports that Whaley wants C. Jones to start or be the quarterback of the future. However, he is clearly a "project". We know that there is a small supply of starting caliber qb's in the NFL. We also know the bills don't have a plethora of draft choices this year. Lastly, virtually every expert would agree that Tony Romo is a better/more dangerous quarterback than Taylor, when healthy. There were reports that Jerry wanted to play him over Dak in the playoffs! Here is a plan that might make sense for 2017 and beyond: 1) trade Tyrod Taylor before his option bonus kicks in to a Qb needy team, particularly one that wants a mobile Qb. If you don't think he could fetch a 2nd or 3rd round pick then you haven't been paying attention to the trade and financial cost of qbs in the NFL over the last few years. 2) aggressively pursue Tony Romo in a trade. I don't love him. I know he is fragile. However, allegedly he will only be dealt to the AFC, his salary is low ($14.5 mil for 2017), and he wouldn't be the long term solution. The cost is reported to be a 2nd round pick with conditions. In this scenario, you get Romo for Tyrod. The trade cost to get Romo would not result in further depleting our small draft pick allotment. And better yet, no money locked up in our starting Qb in 2017 and beyond. 3) tell the world that C. Jones is the future franchise Qb, but he isn't ready yet. Give him plenty of practice reps (as Romo will need down time during the week). Let him develop and evaluate him after the 2017 season 4) draft the best available wr at #10 and tell Romo to entice him to accept a trade here. Romo might like McCoy, a healthy Clay, Watkins and a big, talented (and most importantly, cheap) Wr stud from the draft. Have you seen what the projections for Woods or any other WR2 are in this upcoming FA market???? 5) find a solid veteran starting RT in the FA market. RT's are far more affordable than Wr in the FA market. 6) get healthy on D, use draft picks wisely and let McDermitt do his thing. We will be better on D this year. Can't be much worse. 7) cross your fingers on health in 2017. If Romo stays heathy then the bills offense is certainly playoff caliber. And certainly better than last season. Romo and his health are a good fit for a quick passing west coast offense. And we have a very strong running game. If Romo gets hurt then C. Jones takes over and you can cut Romo with no salary cap ramifications and tack a new course next year. And we may be bad enough to get a high draft pick. Thoughts???

Andy Reid is not a perfect clock manager by any means. However, he is one of 4 or 5 ELITE coaches in the NFL. It's not really debatable if you look at his career.

Why not offer the Jets Gilmore plus a pick for Richardson?

With a few simple moves I believe the Bills could be back in the playoffs next season. And I believe they could do it without spending much more than they already are. 1) Hire a new coach who uses the 3-4 Defense. Pursue in the following order… Cowher, M Schottenheimer, Billick, Grimm 2) Cut, trade, or let the following players leave via free agency to clear their salaries off of the payroll – Schoebel ($6m), Kelsay ($4m), Owens ($6.5m), Reed ($2m), Spencer Johnson ($3m), R Fitzpatrick ($2.5m). In addition, let all of our smaller LB’s and several other FA’s go. That would save an additional $4-5m. Total savings would be $28-30m. 3) Sign DT Vince Wilfork as a huge run stopping force in his prime at 28 years old (avg $10m per season over 6 years). This would also weaken our biggest Divisional opponent. Sign WR Malcolm Floyd who is a huge 6’5 deep threat as our #2 WR (avg $4m per season over 3 years). Sign QB Jason Campbell to be the starting QB for 2 seasons and bridge the gap to a young draft pick. He has had a new coordinator every year, doesn’t make mistakes, is mobile, and has shown flashes of brilliance ($4m per season over 2 years). Sign Karlos Dansby who is versatile in the 3-4 defense and is a big, strong, playmaking LB ($7m per season over 4 years). Sign Johnny Jolly, an experienced 3-4 DE who is a strong run blocker and 27 years old ($3.5m per season over 4 years). Total spend = $28.5m. Fill other depth needs cheaply and with draft picks. 4) Draft a LT in 1st round (Okung/Campbell/Davis), Big 3-4 DE in 2nd Round (C Dunlap, Griffen, Graham), QB in 3rd (LeFevour or Pike), OLB/NT in 4th and 5th 5) New lineup would look like QB – J Campbell, T Edwards, Rookie (3rd Rounder) RB – F Jackson, M Lynch FB – Grab a good blocker…yes we will run and use a traditional fullback WR – L Evans, M Floyd, R Parrish, S Johnson, J Hardy TE – S Nelson LT – Rookie (1st Rounder), D Bell LG – Levitre C – Wood/Hangartner RG – Incognito RT – B Butler, D Bell DE – M Stroud, R Denney NT – V Wilfork, K Williams, Rookie (4th Rounder) DE – Jolly, Rookie (2nd Rounder) OLB – A Maybin (5th Rounder) MLB – P Posluszny, C Draft MLB – K Mitchell, C Draft OLB – K Dansby CB – T McGee CB – L McKelvin CB – D Florence CB – R Corner, Lankster FS – Byrd, G Wilson SS – Whitner K – Lindell P – Moorman KR – McKelvin PR – Parrish With these moves which will only require an additional investment of $5-10 million, we could be playoff bound and set up nicely for the future.
