  1. http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2010/10/report_ravens_could_be_interested_in_merriman.html

According to Peter King, the Ravens have expressed interest in acquiring Merriman. It's not like no one would take him if we don't. The article lists where Merriman would prefer his landing spot to be. I bet he'd be upset if Buffalo claims him. The Bills wouldn't be able to retain him past this season unless they're the only team willing to risk signing him long term. At least the Bills would have the opportunity to evaluate him the rest of the season and decide if he's worth re-signing. All it would cost is a portion of his $3.269 million contract this season. For a team so far under the salary cap and in desperate desperate need of athletic linebackers that can rush the passer, it's really not a very high price to pay to try him out.

  2. Anyone know Wang's status? Has he progressed enough to be on the field since the injury? I guess only the coaches would really know but I haven't heard any clips about him other than being on the inactives ach week.

That's what I was wondering as soon as I read that Cord Howard would be our starting RT. It would be nice if someone from this draft class would show some promise or at least get more than token playing time.

  3. It is but I still don't think it's embarrassing as +6 against Dallas topped off with TD's on defense and Special Teams and finding a way to lose.

Good point. That loss was truly devastating. By now we've become desensitized to it at least. The loss this week, while pathetic, has just been par for the course.

  4. What actions do you suggest they take right NOW? Here's their options.

a.) Continue trading away the best players on the team for mid round draft picks.

b.) Just start cutting guys that have underperformed.

If they do a or b then they would have to do c.

c.) Sign a bunch of guys off other people's practice squads.

Would any of these be even marginally helpful? What they need to do is not fail on next year's draft.

  5. Hell, we got a 3rd and a 5th for Willis, but we only get a 4th for Marshawn? Yikes.

The value of running backs has gone down drastically since then.

I'd rather have Marshawn instead of Fred be our starter for the next 3+ years but Fred wouldn't have any trade value. They had to extend Lynch or trade him. He's better than a fourth round pick but that's all they were going to get for him at this point.

  6. It's amazing after an 0-4 start and looking AWFUL that we would still draft 3rd if the season ended today. What's a team gotta do to earn the 1st overall pick?!?!? my gosh i thought we were a lock, but i guess not.

If only the NFL ordered the draft positions by how ugly a team looks when they play or how bad a teams roster is, we would've drafted third or fourth rather than ninth last year.

  7. That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The ONLY way to rebuild a team is through the draft? No trades, no free agents? I suppose the Bills didn't trade to get Cornelius Bennet? Did we draft Steve Tasker? Pete Metzlaars? James Lofton? Name me a team since 2000 that has gone to or won the superbowl that didn't rely on trades or free agency to strengthen the team. Is the draft important..yup. Is it the ONL way to rebuild a team...hell no.

Those were complementary players to a team already loaded with hall of fame players. You're not going to find a Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, or Bruce Smith in free agency (unless they're on the last gasp of their career). You're especially not going to get those types of players to come to Buffalo with the current view of the city and franchise.

Once you have elite players to build around, then you can acquire quality complementary players in free agency. As of now, we have no elite players to build around yet.

  8. ...or gives up a sack...or breaks a nail and takes himself out of a game...or plays way below his contract. Yes we do.

But getting back to Clausen for a second I love how noble and patient everyone gets for players on other teams. How many "Spiller is a bust!!" posts were there the last two weeks? Brilliant! And even better, no one gets the irony.

    Case in point:

    PTR

Well I'm not among those that call Spiller a bust. It goes both ways. There are posters that are reactionary in their hatred of current Bills, former Bills, and players they wanted the Bills to draft. You're still contributing to that epidemic with the topic.

  9. Who's judging? I'm just doing a public service and posting how Clausen did because I know some folks thought he was the man.

Funny how we are so concerned about judging players on other teams too soon when we do it all the time with our own players. Heck, we call "bust" in OTA's!

    PTR

It's yet to be determined how good or bad he will be. If someone made a similar post after he had a 300 yard 3 TD day, I'd react the same way. But it's quite clear what you were attempting to do with the topic: rub his first NFL start in the face of anyone who wanted the Bills to draft Clausen. People do the same thing with Jason Peters anytime he gets a false start penalty.

I guess when you're a fan of a perennial train wreck the only solace that you can take is in the misfortunes of others.

    Pretty much.

  10. The only thing I'd argue is that there weren't really any available QBs this off-season that would make a good long-term option for the Bills; well, maybe outside of Sam Bradford. Florio could be 100% right on this one, or it could be that the Bills saw the same thing I did: Outside of Bradford, this wasn't a good year to pick up a franchise QB.

We'll see what happens in the next off-season.

    I think this is accurate.

However, if management can't find a long-term option out of the quarterbacks of next years draft class, they're a lost cause.

  11. I think Byrd is 'overrated' in the sense that he probably doesn't deserve to be considered the best Bills defender in a decade. But he's a good starter who shows a penchant for making big plays. I'm happy we have him, and I don't htink he's worse than George Wilson.

Here's a voice of reason and moderation. Byrd can be a good starter and he is better than Wilson. I'm satisfied with him as our free safety for future seasons. He does need to improve some things such as tackling.

But I agree with Freester that he gets overrated by Bills fans. The fans simply cling to him because he's the only draft pick from the past 5 years that has produced...AT ALL (besides Lynch but he gets hated on instead). It's the sorry lack of overall talent and numerous draft busts that makes Byrd stand out among the bunch.
