  1. That is how the entire country views the Bills. Whether right or wrong, it is how it is. The Bills have no one to blame for themselves. Countless mistreated players. Players leaving because the did not feel they got a sufficient enough pay raise, that they eventually would up getting somewhere else.

Mr.Wilson whom I do respect and admire as a person for what he has done for this league, has put a black cloud over this organization over the past ten years.

Well I think we all know it's not a misconception but the truth, it literally is spelled out in black & white on how our franchise and some of the other sad sack franchises operate.

  2. Actually it's not. RB is the position with the shortest learning curve and rookie RBs have traditionally had a high rate of return in their rookie year. Almost no matter where you take them. 2nd RD RBs (MJD comes to mind) have been as productive as 1st, even 3rd and 4th rounders. Hell, even UDFA like Freddie. Which is why the RB position is the most overrated position in the modern NFL. You can find them ANYWHERE for cheap. The days of the single work horse RB are over. It's a tandem now. A cheap tandem.

Which is why picking a RB with the number 9 pick, no matter how good he is, when you already had 2 Pro Bowl caliber backs on the roster and multiple gaping holes at several key positions was a catastrophic f*&k-up for the front office. But they made the choice, so we have to deal with it. But then to take the 9th pick and NOT play him is even worse. The kid should be learning on the field, especially when your team is a miserable 4-10 and has no shot at the playoffs.

CJ Spiller has been a huge disappointment in his rookie year. There's no other way to color it. He needed to come in and be a game breaker from day one to validate the pick by the front office. He didn't. Don't make excuses now.

That doesn't mean he won't become a good back. But it's not a good sign that he is taking this long to adjust when RB is the easiest position to adjust to in the NFL. As history has repeatedly shown.

    +1

  3. That is my point. That right there. You need to hit on a few key picks, and acquire quality depth. Donte Whitner is not the problem (among other things).

Yes, you are confused as to my point, so perhaps I still haven't articulated it well although I keep trying. The point is not, as some of you misfits continue to insist, that Polian is a bad GM or that Ralph isn't a total jackass for allowing him to walk. REPEAT: THAT IS NOT MY POINT.

Should have used a different thread topic then, no need to have a direct correlation to Polian.

My point is that Polian hasn't aced his drafts - far from it. He has built the Colts into a contender through managing the cap well, acquiring the best QB in the game, and fitting role players into his system.

No one on this thread claimed he aced all his drafts, what were throwing back in your face because of the thread topic is that he clearly does a better job than most of the organizations out there. You should have started a thread that states: Even though Polian doesn't hit a homerun every time up to the plate he still has the guile to recover from early round misses which OBD clearly doesn’t, although that is clear as day and would be an asinine thread topic. Good day sir.

There is too much talk around here about the Bills' first round misses. The problem with this organization is its constant changes of direction, its misevaluation of its own roster, and its spendthrift owner's refusal to invest in quality depth, mid-level free agents, and coaching.

  4. For the sake of accuracy the discussion of the draft began after the first week of the season. It was obvious right from the start that most people knew what the outcome was going to be from this misfit organization.

I stand corrected, yes this year it began earlier than most years, I was trying to give them props. 2008 it started shortly after the bye week. (week 6).

  5. Brown has been a colassal disappointment, ask any Colts fan. Gonzo has been injured off and on for his entire career.

I can't believe how dense some of you are. The Colts are a team with an undersized, oft-injured defense, a weak offensive line, and a slew of early-round draft misses. Do those things sound familiar? Yet they win. Why? A constant, coherent system, good leadership in the locker room, and an incredible QB. The point is that there are different ways of building successful teams.

There are a lot of different ways to build a successful team, you are correct. The problem is, we fired our architect who knows how to do it over and over a decade ago, and since then we haven’t done squat. You wanted to dissect him in this thread. So what is dense, this post or the people responding that its only because of Manning, and Polian only has one ring….

Your comment “Yet they win. Why? A constant, coherent system, good leadership in the locker room, and an incredible QB” makes no sense. Are you stating that a constant coherent system of good leadership isn’t the result of Polian drafting the right people? I am confused with the point you are trying to make here.

I would rather have a chance every year at the playoff’s as opposed to starting to discuss next year’s draft by week 6 and how we are going to F it up by picking a Maybin, or Williams or Whitner…. period, so give me Polian and an undersized, oft-injured defense, a weak offensive line, and a slew of early-round draft misses everyday of the week and twice on Sundays.

  6. maybe the secondary can get some picks from "Mr. Interception" Jay Cutler and the D-Line can get some sacks...this is after all the team that gave up 9 sacks in the first half to the NY Giants earlier in the year...Martz loves the deep drops and throws, which lead to lots of hits on the QB if you can't block it up right...

Problem #1, our D-line isn't even on the same continent as the Giant D-line. If you can get pressure on Cutler, he will blow it agreed, but we don't have the ability to create the pressure. If you give him some time he isn't that bad.

That being said, this is one of the few winnable games left so let’s hope they somehow pull one out of the hat!

  7. The sentiment of the post is correct and you could do the same with the Pats' recent drafts. The point being that the Bills have not drafted well in the 1st rounds recently but neither have a lot of teams and that having high draft picks in no way assures you are picking a good player. There are so many variables with giving 21 year old kids $50M in a 1st round, having them go to an unfamiliar city and try an adjust to something they may never be suited for.

I think the big lesson is that once you have your QB it makes things a lot easier for you and allows for a greater margin of error. I do hear about bashing of the Bills' front office for taking a guy like Hardy but not the Pats for the same round WR like a Chad Jackson or Steelers' like Limas Sweed.

Why root for the number one pick in the draft when it is less than a 50/50 chance of getting a Pro Bowl player. Every front office whiffs....hopefully by the law of averages the Bills do not try and overthink themselves and pick the right player

I read an article within the last month or two on ESPN that broke down specifically the AFC East drafts for the past ~4 or 5 years and it was horrible. Not just us, but everybody's, they went through who was drafted/round/ if still on the roster and I was shocked. I wish I could find it.

Manning wasn't a crap shoot, but Edge over Williams was a surprise. Not that picking Williams would have been a bad move, since Indy probably would have been a better place for him than NO at that time.

The '00 Colts are like the late 80's to mid 90's Bills. Except that those SB Bills team didn't play in the cap era and didn't face a team as weak as the Bears in the SB. And it's too bad that a QB prospect like Manning (probably) isn't coming out in 2011.

When it was time to draft Manning or Leaf, the general consensus at the time was split. There were a ton of people enamored with Leaf and his gun slinging ways, confidence etc…

and the knock on Manning was he could never beat Florida, it wasn’t 80/20 in favor of Manning, it was pretty darn close to 50-50.

  8. Coach Tuesday - this is a thread that I've been meaning to post for weeks.

I didn't know who they drafted but I knew one thing - they weren't making much of a difference. I did know of Donald Brown, who hasn't done squat.

And for all those mentioning Collie and Garcon, their success can be credited to Manning who has been working diligently with them. I'm guessing he could make it work with a lot of receivers.

I was just thinking the other day - the Colts have had their franchise, all-time great QB for several years now and you would think by now they would have several guys of note stepping up on Defense but that's not the case at all. They got a great one in Freeney and Mathis seems good but there really aren't many names on that defense. And it seems their offensive line has been in transition for a few years now.

I don't know what this proves other than the draft is a crap shoot and that's why New England trades down every year to stock pile picks. No coincidence that they have 2 first rounders, 2 second rounders and 2 third rounders. Get as many picks as possible because outside the top 3 - the percentages go down dramatically. And even in that top 3 you will get your occasional bust.

It wasn't a crap shoot when Polian choose Manning over Leaf nor was it when he choose Edge over Ricky (leave my helmut on during interviews) Williams. Those two picks alone were huge critical picks for that franchise.

p.s. You need to change your icon to Cain Velasquez

  9. Very good. you made your point. Now show me who exactly decided to pick Aaron Maybin beside the vague and mysterious "front office"? Can't do that either, eh? While you're at it show me who drafted "busts" like Jairus Byrd, Eric Wood and Andy Levitre?

    PTR

I think the point is, as an "organization", after Polian left, then Butler and Smith we have not done a great job at evaluating talent. I think Butler and Smith rode on the coattails of Polian a bit, but blame whomever you want, I am not going to argue semantics here, that is why we have been mired in such a decade long slump.

  10. As useless as Maybin is, he can't compare with McCargo in useless longevity as a 1st round pick. His continued career is inexplicable.

And at least we didn't trade back into the first round to get him as well!

When you are talking a 90 year old man than means kicking him in the ankle right?

Add: Oh yeah Maybin, what a let-down.

Yes good point, especially if it is really hot and humid, then maybe a stomping is more effective.

  11. I bet Maybin wishes the Bills still had Edwards and Lynch -- now he's got the wrath of the fan base all to himself.

The guy might go down as the worst draft pick in Bills history, but I'm starting to feel bad for him. I don't think he's lazy or unmotivated. I just think he has no business being on an NFL roster. An undersized guy has a handful of good games in college and suddenly is supposed to be a fixture on an NFL defense -- and at a position he's never played. Absurd.

Fans' wrath should be focused on the people who decided to pick him at #11.

Exactly, this front office sucks bigtime. Bill Polian please come back, we'll let you kick RW in the nutz as much as you want...anything...

  12. Above adequate? Probably not, no. I definitely think that the tackle positions need to be improved, and that the center position could be more stout (I still can't believe that Eric Wood hasn't been moved to center; guards are much easier to come by in my opinion than great centers--which Wood could become). I'm simply saying that I don't think the performance has been as crippling to the team as other areas, such as the DL, LBs, DBs, etc.

I think that a great QB, combined with another legitimate threat (i.e. a 2nd WR or TE that teams have to game plan against) combined with 2 legitimate offensive linemen would make this team's offense formidable.

The defense, however, is going to take much more work; say, 2 pass rushers, 1 run-stuffing LB, a better NT (maybe Williams or Troup can learn the position, who knows?), safeties that can actually cover, etc.

Maybe the injury postponed the move. That would be great if he developed into our next Kent Hull. With a mobile QB like Fitz it helps mask the lines short coming's. Agreed the tackles need to be upgraded for sure.

On Defense we really blew it when we took Witner or Ngata and Maybin over Orakpo, that set us back a ton.

  13. According to NFL.com, the Bills don't even rank in the bottom 1/3 of the league...

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?archive=false&role=TM&offensiveStatisticCategory=OFFENSIVE_LINE&tabSeq=2&qualified=true

They also rank 5th in the league in yds/carry and 1st overall in "Power" rushes (runs that came on 3rd or 4th and 2 or fewer yards that gained first downs).

The stats don't lie...the Bills line isn't nearly as bad as many here would like to believe.

    http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2010/10/12/1745685/bills-vs-jaguars-notes-from-the-o-line-week-5

Interesting read as it relates to the Bill's line specifically. The original post was to emphasize why it is so difficult to find good lineman these days. Putting stat's and rankings aside, you can't really believe that our current O-line is above adequate. It is a weak link as well as the Defensive line. We need more talent in both sides of the trenches, you can agree with that, right?

  14. O-line play is a process of its own play as well as the play of the QB, RB's and the receivers the QB has to throw to. Good QB's help get the line in protection and can compensate with escape-ability via mobility. While RB's can also make the lines blocking look better then what it is. WR's also can make it so that they take attention away from blitzs and such.

I think we can make due the G's and C's its really the tackle play. We need a RT and a LT most coaches will tell you tackle play is key to line play. If I were setting up the Bills draft board it would go QB, LT, RT, anyother positions are really after thoughts as we can't have a function offense without a QB and a function O-line in front of him.

Basically get a QB and some protection for him the rest has to wait

I think your under estimating the value of an all pro center, Kent Hull made that K-Gun go with the right reads and line calls. Block head Kelly executed the pass or hand off but it worked because the line had the right blocking scheme called by Hull. I agree with the other poster earlier in the thread, Bill Polian knows this and so do the Steelers.

  15. I was thinking the same. The one year Buffalo has a real shot for the #1 pick and the whole draft process will be in turmoil over the potential lockout. A large crop of underclassmen will opt to stay in school. This would be just a tough break that no one could foresee!

Agreed, you can't even make this stuff up, cursed.
