  1. As far as I'm concerned, what impresses me about Manuel is: considering he's a rookie, he's played very coolly, calmly, the pressure doesn't appear to get to him. That bodes well for us in future big games. Also, he arm talent looks ELITE. He makes throws that Fitz simply COULD NOT MAKE look EFFORTLESS. He also hits his WR's in stride on those 20 yard passes - something guys like Rodgers do well, and something that enables a team to overcome the 2nd and 15 type penalty situations that often kill drives. I also like his pass first mentality, considering he's such a capable runner. I'm smiling ear to ear thinking how good this offense is going to be in ten games, or next year. I think EJ could work on handing the ball off some - his hand offs aren't always pretty. Also, he'll improve on making reads, but I think we have a QB with all the talent necessary to take us to a Championship - FINALLY! I was hoping he'd look a bit like Cam Newton - as I think Newton is a top 5 NFL talent at QB - and so far I'm very impressed. This offense, when it clicks, is going to be fun to watch. Look out for the Bills if we make it to the playoffs, as by then we'll be one of the most balanced teams in the NFL.

  2. The jersey Manuel is holding up at the draft has the collar from the '11 season and not that god awful white neck roll looking thing? I was reading about it on uni-watch then noticed the draft pictures. Looks like they and other teams have ditched it too.

Gotta love the hindsight going on in this thread...

Here's a thought, if teams knew JJ Watt would be as good as he is, he wouldn't have made it to the Locker/Gabbert pick. So there's that.

Gotta love the hindsight going on in this thread...

You are missing my point, yes it's hindsight but Watt went where he was should have and Locker/ Ponder went way before they should and Gabbert went about where he was supposed to at the time. I apologize for the hindsight but I'm only using it to prove that teams fall for the idea that if you don't have a QB and theres one you like, you need to take him as early as possible. There seems to be a trend of teams assuming that the best or next best QB available is the best player available and let their need cause them to fall in love with sub-par talent. Meanwhile better players fall to better teams and the rich get richer and the poor are stuck watching a sub par QB struggle on a bad team. As I said in another post why take EJ Manuel at 16 (whom Marrone says needs lots of work) if he can't even beat out Kevin Kolb in his rookie year. I want to see this team win and if they are going to take a QB in the first round he better be ready to play and not be a project with huge upside who might have been had later on. I want to also say that as hard as I've been on this pick I don't think Manuel is a bad pick I think its an irresponsible pick they paid to high a price for someone who is to too big of a risk. This is a luxury pick that should have been made by a good team looking to groom an heir apparent, I'm not making any friends with my opinions here and this isn't gonna help but this reminds me of the Aaron Maybin pick. A bad team taking a guy for his upside over his ability to contribute right away, teams don't get better that way.

  4. I think I will trust the facts more than your nausea

My nausea is telling me a couple things...

    1. There were a lot of would's and could's supporting those "facts."

    2. I don't see all five of those teams grabbing a QB

    3. Even if there were 5 taken, I don't see much of a gap in the talent in the 1st and 6th Qbs available.

That's my opinion not Kiper or McShay's, those guys aren't true evaluators because they factor in what they hear from outside sources, also they believe there was 1st rd talent at the QB position, I don't. Thank you though for being arrogant enough to assume that my opinions are just their regurgitations because they run counter to your own. Next time I do listen to someone, I'll seek out the knowledge and experience of the guy with 5 billion posts on a message board because that's where the "facts" reside.

  5. There was no doubt the Bills needed a QB. They identified 'their guy' and got him. In the process they got an extra second round pick and a seventh plus we have a player at the most important position in football. QB's always go before 'their valued spot'. Do you think Jake Locker was worth the 8th pick, Christian Ponder the 12th??? No but this is how drafting QB's goes. Without a good one it doesn't matter how good your team is

Is that acceptable to you as a fan? We don't have a good Qb so were going to pass over actual talent and take one because that's "how drafting QBs goes." It isn't to me.

I'm sure the titans and Jags could find somebody to play just as good as Locker/ Gabbert while JJ Watt is playing for them instead of kicking their teeth in twice a year. A legit QB talent can drastically change a franchise but taking one in the first round does not make him a franchise QB. Those teams are hurting because they bought in to the myth of 'if you don't have one, you gotta get one' and forced themselves to fall in love with guys that weren't that talented and passed on guys who were and that's what buffalo did.

  6. What makes you so certain that if Manuel was still available late 1st, Philly wouldn't have moved up to assure that they got him before the Bills? It would have been rather costly for them to move back to mid 1st from the 36th pick, bottom 1st from 36 not so much.

That would have been the best thing to happen to the Bills.

They could have gotten on the phone and moved back some, the 49ers moved up to 18 and falcons to 22.

My overarching theme of this post though, is that they were the only team that didn't know that no one else was going to move back, trade up, or stay put to take one of these Qbs in the first round. Also that these QBs are not that good and whomever you pick is only going to be as succesful as the situation they go into. I'd rather have Eifert and Justin Rodgers to go along with whatever qb was left I don't care if its Glennon or Jones whether its at 46 or the 7th rd over a project with terrible accuracy that wont play this year.I would also bet big money that Barkley, Nassib or both are sitting there at 46.

Look at Cincinatti compared to Buffalo right now, I like Dareus but had they taken AJ Green instead Fitz might be the Bills QB still because guys like that make middling QBs look good. That's what is happening with the bengals right now, they have a nice qb but not an elite one so what do they do? they team him with Green, and instead of a being content with one good WR like buffalo, they draft another one (Sanu) and even though they have a good TE in Gresham they grab Eifert too. So as much as I am crapping on EJ Manuel there is hope he can be a player, but you don't take a QB at 16 if he isnt going to beat out Kevin Kolb or Tavaris Jackson right away when there is talent to be had at positions of need that can help this horrible team right now.

  7. That was his team today.

If the bills didn't want Smith, and the jets didn't take him either, and at 16 the bills were the last team with a QB need, why wouldn't they take someone they can use right away instead of rolling the dice like the incompetent dolts that they are?

Even I knew as soon as the jets didn't take Geno that there wouldn't be a QB taken in rd 1. Within about 3 minutes after the jets pick I had the QB scenario figured out for rd2. A. Trade up to 31/32 to grab a QB ahead of the next team that needs one (jax) which I understand isn't Rd 2 but almost. B. Since the Eagles were the other team with strong interest in Manuel, and the Bills felt they had to have him you trade ahead of them to 34 with SF. Or I believe this is the best option, C. You take whatever Qb is available at that point because they are all pretty much Projects or guys who might be ready but have low ceilings, and don't they have to give up a pick to do so.

None of the QBs available could start for for the Bills or any other team this year, no QBs were good enought to be drafted day 1 and only one team was incompetent enought to not know it. Oh, and of all the projects, they took the one who needs the most time to develop. Way to go morons you panicked and panicked hard, get your F'ing heads out of the sand and look at whats going on around you. Like the Broncos in '11 you didn't need to make this pick and it was obvious to everyone but you.

Hey buddy, better get some linemen tomorrow to protect Kolb, Jackson, Korp and whatever retreads you bring in to play for the next 5 years until EJ is ready to go.

This pick makes me wanna f'ing puke.

  8. Pat Tillman

Have one, although not a big jersey wearer I'll partake for Bills games and the Super Bowl and Since I will not wear Bills gear for the Super Bowl until they go again, Tillman has been my go to SB jersey.

  9. I'd say we have a pretty good track record of taking mediocre and/or completely unknown talent and turning them into good-to-very good starters at LT. First Peters, then Bell, now Hairston....none of these guys had any sort of pedigree, although Hairston was considered good value. So now we have a monster first round talent to work with...if the Bills want this kid to play LT, I have no doubt that's where he'll end up playing.

So based on this past success; is it safe to say that Glenn will be wearing green and eating cheese steaks in the city of brotherly love come contract time?

  10. Just read a few of the news stories about this and am just wondering, are any of you are any of you as annoyed as I am to hear a clamoring for a domed/retractable roof stadium?

Personally I would love a downtown venue, as long as there is enough parking/ tailgating space and a better or at least equal (to the ralph) traffic situation to and from the game. I realize what it could create some vigor in the city as a multi-use facility, but as a Bills fan I can't help but be selfish and only think of what it means to me as a fan. If there is a roof, in my opinion it will close in November and not open til May, I hope I'm wrong about this, but Ive rarely seen teams with retractable roofs keep them open in the cold. Especially in the Super Bowl even in warm areas like AZ and Houston where the roofs are for when it's too hot, the NFL chose to keep them shut. And in Toronto a few years ago the players wanted to open the roof in December and it didnt happen. So what I'm selfish about as a fan is this, there is a mystique about the Bills that goes beyond the players and organization, the harsh weather and grizzled, maniac fans who withstand it and enjoy it through thick and thin have been the true Identity of this team and I'd hate to lose it so that an RV or boat show can come through town.

    One more thought...

Of these 5 cities who has the worst weather? Minneapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, New York, Chicago. Of those cities whose football team is never in the conversation as having the best fans? Hint: the answer to both questions is the team that plays under a roof.

  11. I will agree 100% that he does a great interview. The rest of the time when he isn't interviewing is what bothers me. Another poster alluded to it with his 11:30 tease 11:40 tease... I prefer John Ditulio(sp?) and also enjoy the loose cannons and dan patrick.

Dude, Bite your tongue! Ditullio! There have been few worse sports talk radio guys ever, EVER! He's even worse than Brad Davies, which is seemingly impossible!!! C'mon, he does celebrity birthdays and never fails to talk about a "great" Pittsford-Sutherland vs Fairport JV girls Basketball game the night before, on the same day there is major pro sports news. He's awful, absolutely awful. Unless you have a daughter on a local JV basketball team or want to hear how great Penn State is.

  12. If the Bills are smart they will continue to stockpile their defense with the best players available to them. With a much greater emphasis on defense (you can already see the positive affect that Coach Wannstedt is having) they can finally knock off the Pats by winning the AFC East and subsequently qualifying for the playoffs.

The best possible scenario for the Bills would then be the following:

    1. Sign LT D. Bell prior to the draft. He can get the job done at LT and allow the Bills to concentrate on improving the defense.

    2. Draft a top notch CB at #10 overall (i.e. D. Fitzpatrick) or even better, trade down a few spots, take the CB at that position and acquire a late R1 pick for our first R4 pick (essentially our R1 (10) & R4 picks for possibly R1 (14) & R1 (27)).

We could then do the following:

R1 (14) - Draft CB D. Fitpatrick (this fills a big need and gives us more depth at a very important position; quality cover CBs are a must vs NE's receivers).

R1 (27) - Claim WR M. Wallace and forfeit the pick to Pittsburgh. This fills another big need and allows Gailey to stretch opposing defenses because of Wallace's trmendous speed and big play ability. The Bills will not be able to obtain a bigger impact player than Wallace for thier offense at this spot.

R2 - Draft QB Osweiler. Take best player available and fill another important need (i.e. a solid backup QB and the QB of the future for the Bills). With nine picks the Bills can afford to take a QB at this spot. They need somebody with more talent than Thigpen to develop for the future behind Fitzpatrick.

R3 - Draft an OLB. Fills a need. Bills would then have Barnett, Morrison, R3, and Moats at OLB.

    R4 - Draft a S. Fills a need. More depth/talent is needed at S.

R5a - Draft a TE. Fills a need for a second TE to backup Chandler.

R5b- Draft a LT. Fills a need for another LT even though Hairston can play LT and RT. Can't have too many guys who can play LT.

R6 - Draft a MLB. Fills a need for a backup spot behind Sheppard. Bills would then have Sheppard, C. White, and R6 at MLB.

R7 - Draft an OC/OG. Fills a need behind Wood.

Even if the Bills don't sign another FA (and it seems more likely that they will), the roster would look like this:

    Offense - 23

QB: Fitzpatrick/R2/B. Smith. Solid depth and good versatility. Could still sign an undrafted FA QB to develop.

RB: F. Jackson/Spiller/Choice. It would be ideal to pick up a big back for short yardage/goal line situations. B. Jacobs is still available.

FB: McIntyre. Good FB. Very good ST player.

TE: Chandler/R5/(Nelson). Would rather take an extra LB or S than keep TE L. Smith (better depth/better ST) otherwise Smith would be the thrid TE.

WR: M. Wallace/St. Johnson/Nelson/Easley/Hagan/(B. Smith). Martin/D. Jones/Hagan fight for fifth WR spot. Martin could win the fifth spot for ST reasons. Tough call at this point.

    LT: Bell/R5/(Hairston).

    OG: Levitre/Urbik/Rheinhart.

    OC: Wood/R7.

    RT: Pears/Hairston.

    Special Teams - 3

    K/P/LS: Lindell/Moorman/Sanborn. Solid group.

    Defense - 27

DE: Ma. Williams/M. Anderson/Merriman/Kelsay/(Moats). Moats can be a situational pass rusher.

    DT: K. Williams/Dareus/D. Edwards/Sp. Johnson/Troup.

    OLB: Barnett/Morrison/R3/Moats/(B. Scott).

    MLB: Sheppard/White/R6.

    CB: A. Williams/R1/Florence/McGee/McKelvin/Rogers.

    SS: Wilson/R4/Searcy.

    FS: Byrd/B. Scott.

Are you taking about dre Kirkpatrick, also Wallace says he wats Larry fitzgerald $, they don't have that to spend.

  13. Cut them up all you want, but they are helping the cause financially and helping to keep the Bills in Buffalo and that is a fact like it or not.

BTW, Leaf fans are passionate about their team as you Sabres fans, how about some respect? Why so much hate? People leave Leafs games early because maybe the Leafs are sucking bad or many other things to do in a major city?

Lastly, if people can spend the $$'s, then let them, it's their money.

    1. didn't say the game doesn't help the Bills financially, or that I didn't like that fact.

    2. Didn't say the leafs or Toronto fans in general aren't passionate, I'm just saying if you want to see the most passionate leaf fans you gotta come to buffalo. The tickets are hard to come by for average income die hard fans because of the price, and in order to see their team they have to buy more affordable and available tickets for Sabres games. As in any city, season tickets are a status symbol, and in a thriving and highly populated Canadian city with a storied hockey team tickets are more expensive and harder to come by which makes them even more of a status symbol. And I'll say it again having the money to afford expensive tickets doesn't make you a crappy fan, it's just that the status and expense of them invite people who care more about having the tickets than supporting their team, thats why your home croud is weaker than your road crowd. This happens in buffalo too, who do you think scalps all those tickets to leaf fans? This is why the Toronto game atmosphere sucks, any real bills fan in Ontario knows its a better experience and costs about the same amount to travel to buffalo and go to the Ralph than to pay for a ticket to the game at the skydome. Similarly to leafs games it seems there are people there who care as much or more for the novelty and status of the event than the team or teams playing, even an opposing fan is better than a neutral one in my opinion. I don't care how people spend their money, but in a team sport where crowd noise from the "home" crowd is an advantage it sucks to see that people who could care less about the teams or the outcome are a good portion of the attendees and the lack of advantage for the Bills.

    3. As for the argument about the Bills failing to put a good product on the field, it would change nothing. There would be more demand and a higher price for the tickets which would only mean there would be more of the same, the better the team, better the novelty and status that comes with having tickets, still a bad atmosphere. Unless I'm wrong and you guys like the Bills like you like the Blue Jays: when they're contenders.

You are correct about one thing though, if they have the money let them spend it how they like, I just wish they would spend it on the "many other things to do in a major city."

Disclaimer----I realize that not all the leaf fans who come to Sabres games are from the metro area of Toronto but from all over Ontario, and for those fans who only go to a few games a year it's just easier to go to them in buffalo. Which can be nice I hear, because they can get really high before the game at home and their car doesn't smell like weed when they go through customs, if it doesn't already. One disadvantage though, you can only listen to the Hip hits album not the whole anthology.

  14. I am a Bills fan in Toronto and I have been for many years. Since the city doesn't have a NFL team, I think they have the choice of rooting for who they want? Why are they idiots?

They're Idiots because they show up to Bills v. Redskins wearing 49ers and Steelers gear and "cheer the big plays", as George Wilson said. Football or even non-football fans are going these games, not Bills fans, It's not a Bills game its an NFL event, more importantly its a people who can afford it event. The fact is, they pay way more money to make it a crappy atmosphere for people that payed the same amount, who know and want the same incredible atmosphere a real Bills game has. That's not to say all Toronto fans are idiots, or that everybody willing and can spend more money are not great fans, the Toronto fans who show up in Buffalo either at the Ralph for the Bills, or at First Niagara against the Sabres, rich or not, are awesome fans. The fans that travel to Sabres games are worse on the Sabres fans at home than they are in Toronto. Again the fans at big Toronto sports events are the ones who can pay or justify paying for tickets. I know some idiot that payed $1200 to see the UFC at the SkyDome, $1200!!! UFC!!! and they weren't even ringside seats, and if/when the Jays go to another World Series, the die-hard Blue Jays fan who manages the Beer Store in your town isn't going to any of those games unless he pawns his Gordie Howe rookie card.

What I am saying, and a lot of bills fans are saying, and even George Wilson is saying is: if you're not a fan of the Bills or even the "visiting" team and your only reason for spending a couple hundred or thousand dollars on a ticket(s)is to wear your $400 authentic Joe Montana Jersey that you bought because he was your favorite player in grade 8, we'd prefer you just do what you do best, show up late and leave early to Leafs games. Or watch the 49ers game.

  15. Holy Cripes! Bills fans are so happy about signing Mario that the Toronto game has become more palatable? I despise the Toronto game, but as I read I couldn't help but agree,(with the exception of the two being connected somehow)this is a mind f*ck. Thank you Buddy & co. Now as we always say in Buffalo, I'm going to GO enjoy this march weather.

  16. In light of Buddy's presser, and what he oulined as our priorities, here's what my wish list looks like (disclaimer: I don't pay attention to spelling, etc. Nor do I think it's possible to sign more than a couple, hence "wish list"):

    1.) Re-sign SJ13

    2.) Re-sign D. Bell

3.) Go out and get another WR. I think this will be the "splashy" move this year. Vincent Jackson, maybe, but I would prefer Dwayne Bowe...happy with either.

    4.) Add playmakers to the D, some options are;

DE - Mathis and Avril top my charts, but will likely demand big $$, so I REALLY like Tollefson.

He provids depth to the G Men, but will start here, deservedly so. 5 sacks in rotational/

reserve duty. Especially if we stay with the highbrid 43/34 and put Williams and Dareus in

    the middle.

LB - Mario Williams is he best available, and top 3 in the league (IMHO), but no way Houston lets

him go, plus he'd break the bank. So I like Anthony Spencer. He benefits from playing opposite

the very best OLB in the league, but he's a top tier talent that will bring a niche market,

    perfect for the Bills.

CB - Brent Grimes is my favorite, but he's underated and is among a horrible pass D. My fear is

ATL knows his value to them them and re-signs him. This leaves Finnegan, he's

"dirty," but is a guy you love to hate and would rather have on your team, but I'd rather see

Terrell Thomas with us. He'll make a full recovery and he's an above average #2 who is a

BEAST on the preimeter and run support.

5.) re-sign Chandler and add another TE, a la *NE. Finley tops the list (can't imagine GB letting him go), but Shiancoe, Fells, Carlson, and even Tamme are all available. A second TE may not be a huge priority, maybe we get one in the Draft.

    Resulting Mock, 2012.1

Rd 1, pick # 10 - Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama. I just can't get past this kid. Talk about a gamer! e's the second comin of Terrell Suggs.

Alt pick - Riley Reif - OT, Iowa

Rd 2, pick # 42 - Mohammed Sanu, WR, Rutgers. Big, physical WR. Tremendous upper body strength to fight the jam, excellent route runner with excellent hands. Lacks the elite straight line speed but is fearless and ellusive after the catch.

Alt pick - Trumaine Johnson - CB, Montana (rare combo of size speed for a CB)

Rd 3, pick # 74 - Nate Potter - OT, Boise State. Needs to put on some #'s, but is a smart player with a relentless work ethic.

Alt Pick - Joe Adams - WR, Arkansas (smallish @ 5'11" but goes 190 & is fast as lightning (nice slot WR)

Rd 4a, pick # 105 - Jake Bequette - DE/OLB, Arkansas. Big boy, but has the speed to play the rush LB and I wouldn't be surprised if the Bills take a few OLB's this year.

Alt pick - Shea McLellin - DE/OLB, Boise St

Rd 4b, pick # 124 - Ryan Steed - CB, Furman. You don't ear All Conference Selections every year you play if you suck. Good size/speed combo.

Alt pick - Russell Wilson - QB, Wisconsin

Rd 5, pick # 133 - Russell Wilson - QB, Wisconsin. I hope he slips out of the 4th. Small guy @ 5'11'' but is a straight up leader. Posesses a rare resolve and simply performs well, at all times. Probably could have started as a true freshman @ NC State, but he redshirted. Even so, he lead the scout team and tore NC States D up in practice. Went on to three consective season with NC State earning all ACC acolades. Transferred to Wisconsinf or his final year and picked up right where he left off. Great developmental pick with a high potential of being a diamond in the rough.

Alt pick - Rhett Ellison - TE, USC

Rd 6, Tyler Urban - TE, WVU. Switched to the slot for the 2011 season. He was so good in practice, the coaching staff witched him to a fll time starter and woved the kid who was supposed to play in the slot outside to be able to get them both on the field. Always open and catches everything. Who does that @ 250lb's?

Alt pick - Antoine McClain - OG, Clemson

Rd 7, Kyle Martins - P, Rice...why not, lol? 46 yrd average...42% of is punts were downed inside the opponents 20 with only 5 touchbacks....The kid can place his kicks pretty well.

    Flame away...

Sanu is going Back to Rutgers Next Season, so maybe in 2013 :)

  17. trade up with Jacksonville and draft Robert Griffin III...

next year we have a double headed MONSTER of Freddy and CJ running the ball. Healthy wide receivers, and big Tight End's to throw under...

most importantly, with RG3 our o-line will have less pressure as he can manipulate the pocket almost every play...

defenses will have a field day trying to guard the multiple options we can run every down (opens up Brad Smith even more)...

    _________

Kyle Williams back, and Dareus with experience our d-line is back in bizz...

Aaron Williams with experience and our secondary creates more turnovers (like we saw in the beginning of the year)

    _________

we had a great draft last year and can afford to trade up, not to mention the Lynch trade pick we can move...

    DO IT BILLS, DO IT!

He'll suck. Cam Newton he is not.
