  1. Did someone on NFL network or ESPN start using this idiotic phrase? This has to be the third time this week I've heard it. No offense to OP because obviously you're just using the new parlance of our times, but can anyone clarify where this pseudo-intellectual verbal excrement came from?

This is actually a phrase from statistics that has been around for a long time. The basic idea is that you might observe "outliers" around the mean, which in this case might translate to having a season w/ 1200-1500 yards receiving and 10-15 TDs - But over time, as more data over more seasons is collected, you'd expect more average-like numbers (perhaps 800-1000, 6-8 TDs) - That is, you'd expect reversion toward the mean or average ("expected") level of performance. I chose those number for illustrative purposes only, FYI. Hope that helps.

  2. Didn't get as good of a deal but still pretty good (dude said that since we were not calling to cancel, certain deals were not available): 6 payments of $53.99 but $10 off each month for next 12 months, plus threw in "To GO" feature for free. Not bad. Thanks for others for posting!

  3. A positive spin: had Stevie caught it, we most likely wouldn't have dareus.... And may have gabbert, locker etc

Trying to be an optimist. I remember thinking that the only good that comes from the drop was a higher pick. It may turn out to be a good thing. I'd always take a win bs Pittsburgh over a higher pick, but hey....I'm happy we have Marcelosaurus

Thanks for the effort Kelly. Nice post

    +1

  4. How many times have you been to Atlanta? One of the coolest parts about Atlanta is that it's a city that still has a town feel to it. How many places can you live IN a city and still have a house with a yard? If you've ever been near the Governor's mansion, that is the opposite of sterile.

And I don't understand the person who complained about the "southern culture" in Atlanta. Atlanta is arguably the most cosmopolitan city in the south. If you live inside the perimeter (285), you don't have to deal with "the south."

And yes, Atlanta has horrific traffic. Worse than LA, in my opinion. But, I can make it from Webster to Henrietta in 20 minutes. Oh joy! Also, places like Rochester and Buffalo are cold from October to April/May. That has a severe impact on QoL IMHO.

Anywho, when do we sign Clabo ;)

I was a graduate student at Vanderbilt in Nashville for a number of years - In total, I have been to Atlanta 10-20 times. I am certainly no expert on the city, and certain parts don't seem sterile at all, but many of the southeastern cities that have developed fairly recently seem to have more than their fair share of strip plazas (including Nashville) and there tends to be less tight grids of streets and more Sheridan Dr or Transit Rd type streets. But again, I am no expert and these are more or less anecdotal observations.

    Agreed re Clabo, of course.

  5. Definitely only opinion, and I love Buffalo. I was stating that from Clabo's perspective of someone who has lived here and called it home and Buffalo being a brand new city for him. That is all. Maybe he prefers the small town atmosphere. That would be awesome! I was just discussing the decision he is faced with, not ripping on Buffalo.

My personal view is that Atlanta has sort of a sterile feel to it - Buffalo has a lot more character and history. If given the choice, I imagine more people would pick Atlanta over Buffalo than the other way around but that would be to some extent based on perception rather than reality. Having grown up in Buffalo and having a brother who has lived in Atlanta for awhile, it would be a very close call for me if I had to chose between the two cities.

Re Clabo, there are obviously a bunch of factors that would influence his decision, but it is probably fair to assume that if the money were exactly the same, he would be more likely to stay in Atlanta than come to Buffalo.

  6. Interestingly, and for all the talk about how bad the run defense was this past season, the Bills defense allowed for unbelievably bad 92.6 passer rating last season. I think it may be the worst in team history, although I'd have to check the 70s/early 80s. Their pass d in 2009 allowed for a 61.1 rating. They dropped by 31.5 points last season. Forget the atrocious run defense - check out that atrocious pass defense! That's what happens, I guess, when you hire an offensive coach who in turn hires what is by all appearances a weak yes-man to coach the D. It's like Jauron in reverse.

PS - it's official: the 2010 Buffalo Bills had THE WORST PASS DEFENSE IN FRANCHISE HISTORY. There were two years where the D was close: 2001 (92.5) and 1984 (91.5). The 2010 squad, which gave up a 92.6 rating, therefore gets the cigar.

Anyone who thinks we don't CBs and safeties (and pass rushers, of course) needs to have their head examined.

The two are related, obviously. We had a horrible defense last year, and the fact that our run D was a sieve partly explains why opposing Qs passer ratings were so high.

  7. I wonder what this is about, if it's directed at anyone and the overall context for his Tweet? Are the Bills players holding player-lead workouts? Is Merriman working out with any of his team mates? Did he witness one of his younger team mates displaying know-it-all behavior?

    Excellent questions!

  8. There are methods used routinely to reduce if not virtually totally escape what folks who are addicted to this issue call a death tax. Its what trust and estate law is all about.

The thing to realize is that there are a bunch of different ways that a person can logically (or even illogically because there is no law against being stupid and often times these trust and estate decisions are made by folks who are older and sometimes near or at Alzheimers and facing the ultimate unavoidable outcome of death).

Mr. Ralph could easily be one of those like a Warren Buffett or a Bill Gates who has already made the decision not to pass on untold amounts of wealth to heirs because he has seen that simply giving untold wealth to your heirs without them doing anything to earn it or their place in life simply kills people as human beings.

I think all folks want to try to make sure their heirs do not face a life of poverty, but many have little desire to simply penalize their heirs by leaving them ungodly amounts of money.

If Mr. Ralph were to leave significant chunks of his holdings (including the Bills if he wants) in the form of sn irrevocable trust he can escape the massive taxation which you seem to assume as a given.

Not passing on his wealth to his wife or direct family may be the best gift he ever gives to his offspring.

He may want to simply give this "burden" to his heirs who unlike him did little or nothing to earn it.

No one knows and it is stupid and likely simply wrong to ASSUME what is his central motivation in this regard.

Very well put and excellent point!!

  9. I hear you KoK, but I don't think its a desperation move or feeling from me. I am simply looking at an athlete that we have on this team, which Maybin certainly is, and trying to find where he could best help the team. That is not desperation, its creativity. We have a guy under contract. His contract, Im pretty certain, does not state which position he must play. George Wilson was a guy we had on Offense, that has turned into a nice defender and ST for us. Its not impossible. TE is a position where we need some better athletes. I am sure Stupar is a great guy. He doesn't sniff Maybin's god-given athleticism. If Maybin can catch, and is willing to change position, I think TE would suit him very well. Why waste all that money because he can't play DE. We're paying him, we might as well use him.

+1 Why not? It's worth a shot if it looks like nothing is ever going to happen on the other side of the ball.

  10. 3 years ago I called & said I was going to cancel & go to Dish.(I was bluffing). After saying the price was too high & talking to the direct tv rep she gave me the NFL Ticket for half off & the kicker was she gave me HD service for free for a year. I took the advice of a poster that does not come around here much anymore because some posters give him a tough time but he gave me some great advice. So basically I got the NFL Ticket that 1st year for around $30. The 2nd year was tougher but after saying I wanted to cancel the ticket because of the cost the rep gave it to me for 1/2 off & same last year. I do not know how other posters have faired but the last 2 years they have not even given me a problem with the half off(which tells me there is probably a better deal to be had). Last year she also gave me free hd service for 2 years in which the only condition was too sign up for auto deduct. I call them in the middle of July & tell them to cancel my NFL Ticket. When they ask why I say I have season tickets to the bills games & I am at the stadium half the year & $360 is too much. The last 2 years they did not give me a hassle at all, they just knocked it down to $180. The problem is that I have now is I actually like staying home more then going to the games especially when the games do not mean anything. I ended up going to only 3 games last year for the Bills, sold 2 other games & gave the other 2 games to my church. I got 3 tvs setup in my basement & it is fun having 3 different games on watching them all at the same time. Hopefully I will get the same deal this year because if it is $360 along with the $650 or so I pay in season tickets that will be a tough sell to the wife.

Thanks so much! Good negotiating . . .
